5 . Tips of Healthy Lifestyle
There’s no secret - the simplest things are often the best, says nutritionist Dr. John Briffa, if we want to feel good all year round.
Eat mindfully.
In our fast-paced world, there can be a tendency to eat while distracted and shovel in more food than we need and, at the same time, miss out on culinary pleasure.
Get plenty of sunlight in the summer.
Sunlight, as well as the vitamin D that can be made in the skin, is associated with a wide spectrum of benefits for the body. In general, vitamin D is made when our shadow is shorter than our body length, ie when the sun is high in the sky.
Get enough sleep.
Sleep has the ability to optimize mental and physical energy, and optimal levels of sleep (about eight hours a night) are linked with reduced risk of chronic disease (慢性病) and improved longevity.
Modern-day living tends to be ambitious and we can easily find ourselves chasing an ever-growing list of goals, many of which can be material. Some of us could do with spending more time focusing not on what we don't have, but on what we do. Our mood can be lifted by giving thanks for anything from our friends and family to a beautiful landscape or sunset.
A.Practise the art of appreciation |
B.Don't be ambitious and get what you can get. |
C.While burning is to be avoided, get as much sunlight exposure as possible for ideal health. |
D.One simple strategy that can help ensure you get optimal amounts of sleep is to go to bed earlier. |
E.One particular thing to focus on is chewing your food thoroughly. |
F.Lack of sleep will keep you in a good condition. |
G.Many of us will benefit from eating mindfully. |
6 . How to Close a Wound During First Aid
Closing and treating wounds (most often small scrapes) is a relatively common part of providing first aid.
Stop the bleeding. You’ll need to hold a towel in place for a few minutes to fully stop the bleeding. In the case of a minor scratch, bleeding will normally stop not long after the cut is sustained.
Clean the wound with cool water. Now that the wound is free of dirt and debris, your next priority is to clean the wounded area. If you’re near a house or building, you can use the water from a faucet.
Deposit a thin layer of antibiotic cream on the wound. This cream will kill any bacteria that may have gotten in the wound, and help the wound to heal more quickly.
A.You should reapply pressure to the wound after the cleaning |
B.If not, wash the wound with clean water from a water bottle |
C.Control the bleeding |
D.Apply gentle pressure to the small wound |
E.It will also make the wound airtight |
F.Remove any dirt from the wound |
G.If the wound you’re treating is serious |

8 . Can you write the Chinese characters “ganga” (embarrassment) correctly? Do you know how to write characters like “gala” (the corner of walls)? If you can’t, you are not alone. “Now most people are typing into computers instead of writing on paper. We type Chinese characters mainly according to their pronunciation. The result is to recognize characters without remembering how to write them. China Youth Daily did a survey of 2,517 people, in which 90 percent said they had once forgotten how to write a common Chinese character.
Compared to adults, teenagers are better at writing Chinese characters because they spend more time learning and practicing at school. However, the influence of digital (数字的) technology cannot be left out, according to He Yu, head of a research team for Chinese teaching.
“Many students lose themselves in digital tools such as mobile phones and computers, they spent too much time on these tools. As a result, too much use of the tools will make students too lazy to think and write.” he said. Such worries have brought about a popular TV show titled Chinese Spelling Hero, which pays attention to Chinese character writing among teenagers.
In April, the Ministry of Education called for better calligraphy (书法) education in schools. Organizations like the China Calligraphy Association are also working to train more teachers in calligraphy. Interestingly, calligraphy teachers can’t always avoid the influence of modern technology. Shen Bin is a calligraphy teacher at a primary school in Beijing. She said that it’s common for teachers like her to forget certain words. “The calligraphy class is also a good chance for me to remember how to write.” she said.

9 . Currently, there are about 480,000 school buses operating today in the United States. These petro-fueled school buses alone contribute 5.3 million tons of climate-changing pollution every year. Replacing all school buses in America with an electric-powered model would be equal to taking 1 million cars off the road, saving millions of tons of pollution annually.
If schools in America were to swap out all of these school buses with electric-powered replacements, it would not only have plenty of environmental benefits, but also many health benefits for the students taking school buses every week.
Not only do these hundreds of thousands of buses have terrible effects on the environment, they also have harmful health consequences for the students riding the bus every day. Approximately 95 percent of school buses run on gas, which is proven to cause respiratory diseases and worsen existing conditions such as asthma.
“Pollution from petro-fueled school buses is harming our children’s health and contributing significantly to global warming,” said Andrea McGimsey, Environment America Global Warming Director. “Our research shows that whether they’re boarding the bus or on the bus, kids are exposed to poisonous air in high concentrations. Electrifying our buses is a common-sense solution for communities across the nation.”
These electric school buses are already available for schools to consider. They are cleaner, healthier, and often cheaper for schools to purchase in place of petrol-fueled buses in the long run. Electric school buses have zero exhaust-pipe emissions, which could help reduce kids’ exposure to poisonous air on a daily basis.
“When we put our kids on a school bus, we rely on these buses for safe transportation,” said Jeff Robinson, director of U. S. PIRG’s transportation program. “We have the technology to avoid these negative influences, so why wouldn’t we drive toward a cleaner future?”
1. What do the statistics in Paragraph 1 imply?A.The benefit of riding school buses. | B.The popularity of petro-fueled buses. |
C.The necessity of limiting school buses. | D.The urgency of using electric school buses. |
A.The consequences of global warming. | B.Students’ exposure to different diseases. |

10 . English is the most widely spoken language in the world. And of the roughly 1.5 billion speakers globally, the vast majority speak it as a second language. So where are the world’s best non-native English speakers? According to a new report by EF Education First, an international education company, Northern Europeans are the most fluent. Middle Easterners are the least proficient (精通的).
The index (指数) is based on the results of a free online test taken by 2.3 million volunteers in 100 countries. Nearly six in ten of this year’s test-takers were female. Women have always performed better than men, but this year men closed the gap somewhat.
In Europe, the powerhouse economies perform surprisingly badly: only Germany makes the top place of “very high proficiency” countries. France is next, while Spain and Italy are continuously falling behind. A study by a Spanish research institute reported the bad news: 60% of adults say they speak no English at all. The fact that Spanish is a global language in its own right (the language declares 400 million native speakers) is probably the cause. If you speak Danish, you need another language to take part in global culture; speaking French or Spanish (or Arabic) means hundreds of millions of people to talk to without English.
Asia is the region of greatest diversity (多样性). Only Singapore makes the top level, but the Philippines, Malaysia, and India are not far behind. China is further back but still in the second level, a few places ahead of Japan. Struggling in the bottom places are a group of South-East and Central Asian countries like Cambodia and Kyrgyzstan. This relates with another factor: the company repeatedly finds that English skills are highly related with connections and openness to the rest of the world.
1. Which is the best title for the text?A.Where are the world’s most non-native English speakers? |
B.Where are the fewest non-native English speakers? |
C.Where are the world’s best non-native English speakers? |
D.Where are the last non-native English speakers? |
A.Half of this year’s test-takers were female. |
B.Nearly 1.38 million of this year’s test-takers were female. |
C.Women and men equally performed this year. |
D.The gap between female and male is getting close year by year. |
A.Spanish is a global language itself. | B.400 million Spanish speak English. |
C.Spanish is easy to understand. | D.English fails to attract them. |
A.Asia is the region with the best non-native English speakers. |
B.China is the second place with the best non-native English speakers. |
C.Countries in South-East and Central Asian are less open in Asia. |
D.Countries in South-West and Central Asian line in the bottom places. |
