1 . It was nearly dark; the sun was dropping down the mountains far away. Little Tom came back home, with tears in his eyes.
“What’s the matter, Tom? How’s your trip?” His mother asked with a big smile. “I failed. The mountain is so high and full of big or small stones on the way, I still go ahead. But I was tired and it was so late that I had to come back.” Tom cried. “It doesn’t matter, you are only 14 years old after all. You will have another chance.” His mother said. “But, standing at the top of the mountain is my dream!” Tom said. His father came over and asked, “Did you see the green trees on your way to the mountain?” “Sure, and there were a lot of beautiful flowers by the side of the road.” Tom replied. “Did you hear the birds singing?” His father asked. “There were many kinds of birds singing in the trees, and the sound was very sweet.” Tom said. “Did you feel the beauty of nature?” His father asked. “Yes, the blue sky, the white clouds, the green trees and the colorful flowers made a nice picture.” Tom answered. “That’s enough!” His father smiles and said, “Please remember, my son. For often, achieving what you expect is not the most important thing. Although you didn’t reach the top of the mountain, you got a lot on the way.”
It is true that not every goal will be achieved, not every job will end up with a success, and not every dream will come true. The most beautiful scenery is on the way.

Yesterday I took my brother to a Father’s Day event in the city library. We quickly checked in and found two seat. At beginning, a lady shared a popular origin of Father’s Day with us. A few minutes late, she told a true story. It’s about a selfish father who sacrificed herself in the flood for the life of his daughter. It moved to us deeply. Finally, she gave each of us a bag of colored paper or taught us what to make a beautiful card. On received the gift, my father say nothing but gave us a big hug, with tears rolling down.
7 . This is one of a series of books that I loved as a child growing up in Hamburg in the sixties. I seem to remember getting them sometimes after unpleasant visits to the dentist! The Petzi books described the adventures of a little bear, who wore spotted jeans and was fond of pancakes, and his exploration of the world together with his friends, a pelican, a penguin and a seal.
I think they may have influenced my way of seeing the world as I still prefer to draw animals with clothes on now! There were also two little characters, a frog and a tortoise, which I loved and is something I still try to do in my own picture books — add things to the drawings that are not in the text.
When I was a teenager I discovered cartoonists and illustrators (插画家) like Edward Gorey, Sempé, Bosc and others, but most of all I loved the art of Tomi Ungerer. A French artist covered a wide range of styles and subjects. I think he was probably the strongest influence on my own work as an illustrator.
His sense of humour, his love for details and the absurd, and the world he creates in his drawings, all apparent in Papa Snap, I found very appealing. And again, animals with clothes! His books from the seventies still seem very fresh to me.
When I discovered the work of William Steig, I was already working as an illustrator. He worked as a cartoonist for the New Yorker all his life and came to writing and illustrating children’s books when he was in his sixties. I love his picture books: Solomon the Rusty Nail, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Gorky Rises, Brave Irene — more dressed animals! The wonderful stories and the warmth and emotional precision of his illustrations never fail to touch me. I was delighted when I discovered it in a second hand bookshop on Charing Cross Road.

10 . Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, we have 4 minutes to get to our next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker (储物柜) first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention(放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits(肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said that we just needed to write what we thought, and we would pay attention to punctuation(标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I needed to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher said it is the one skill we need in every class.
