2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a misty morning in July, Clay and Acaimie arrived at the base of Mount Liamuiga, ready for their first honeymoon climb. They had married just five days earlier back home in Indiana, the United States.

They had their apparent differences. Acaimie had always been the worrier. Clay, on the other hand, was an optimist—always certain that things would turn out just fine. So it was Clay who wanted to take a day of their honeymoon and climb Mount Liamuiga, which is also a dead volcano—a popular destination for vacationers looking for adventure.

The couple, dressed in white T-shirts and sneakers, arrived for their journey in a rental car expecting to explore. When arriving, they found an empty dirt parking lot with just a small sign marking the beginning of the track. They made their way up anyway.

It took them nearly three hours to reach the peak, but the view made it all worthwhile. Though worn-out, they couldn't have been happier as they took a few selfies(自拍)with their cellphones, and walked around the edge of the volcano.

That's when Clay saw it: a small track, half-hidden beneath plant life, that led into the volcano's crater(火山口). A series of holes had been drilled into the rocks, with ropes that led down. For Clay, the sight was incredibly inviting. It felt like a secret entrance to a mysterious paradise(天堂,乐园). Acaimie was less enthusiastic. The track was steep, and she was afraid of heights, but she bravely followed Clay's lead. After just a few minutes of going downwards, though, she'd had enough. She told her husband she'd wait on the rocks just off the track while he went exploring. “Just be quick,” she said as she watched him set off on the rough path, zigzagging(曲折前进)while grasping the rope.

5 . There are people for whom the motivation lies in their family or companions' duties. For some people, the purpose lies in a soul's spiritual awakening. Brent Clayton, a firefighter by profession, is one such individual who found his purpose early in life and kept working to fulfill it.

Born on March 3, 1984, Clayton hugely felt the need to serve others. He followed his mission in life and acquired his diploma in Public Safety. He gradually realized the importance of securing people's lives, which strengthened his faith in his mission. Clayton further pursued his bachelor's degree from the University of Melbourne and master's degree from Federation University. Then, Clayton worked in the military for a period before moving into a role with the prison service as a prison guard, the youngest person to ever be employed by the service at the time.

Clayton devoted many years of his life to the firefighter recruitment process and fire service industry. He aimed to train the next generation and prepare them for the future. Clayton used his experience and years-long training to prepare candidates who were as enthusiastic about the well-being of the world as him.

6 . It was just a normal day for Ruth Miller, a 63-year-old woman until everything went horribly wrong. She was walking to her car after shopping when the unthinkable happened.

Right as she was unlocking her car, a man quickly came up behind her and tried to wrestle her purse away. She was in a state of shock. Luckily she remembered she had her Safe Personal Alarm (SPA) on her purse, and since she was too scared to scream for help, she quickly reached for the alarm and pulled the pin (保险栓). Immediately her SPA started just screaming. The man didn’t know what to do! He froze for a second, and then ran away like a bat out of hell!

SPA is a safety device capable of creating a 125 dB sound that attracts attention and scares away potential attackers. To compare, it’s the same volume as a military jet during take-off.

Paul Davidson, the inventor of SPA, knows all too well the type of situation that Ruth found herself in. But that’s not the only type of situation that SPA helps protect against. Parents can give it to their kids as an extra means of protection. Teenagers can use it so they can feel safe walking home. Women can know ifs there when they have to use the parking lot at night. “My mother, who is 76 years old, carries it around in case she falls and needs to ask people for help. I only wish I’d have thought of it earlier,” said Paul.

The police have been recommending SPA since it first hit the market. In fact, since its launch, SPA has been in a state, shifting between in stock and sold out nearly every other week, and it’s also got tons of loyal followers worldwide.

1. What does the underlined part “the unthinkable” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A.An attempted robbery.B.A wrestling match.
C.An angry argument.D.A car accident.
2. How did Ruth react to the unexpected situation?
A.She fought violently.B.She froze in great fear.
C.She cried desperately for help.D.She sounded her safety device.
3. Why does Paul mention his mother?
A.To imply the elderly need more care.B.To suggest he cares about his mother.
C.To show SPA can be widely used.D.To make an advertisement for SPA.
4. What can be learnt from the text?
A.SPA is well received in the market.B.People hesitate to pay for security.
C.SPA was sold out in the first two weeks.D.The police seldom recommend products.

8 . When a fire broke out in my home in the middle of the night, I knew I'd do anything I could to save my family. The medicine that I take for my rheumatoid arthritis causes me to wake up in the middle of the night with a dry mouth. January 15, 2016, was no different. I, Indiana, US, awoke at 2:30am needing water.

I was walking back upstairs from the kitchen when I heard my bulldog , Rock. Whatever Rock was doing down there, it made enough noise for me to go to him. By the time I made it to the bottom of the stairs, he was running up, and he never came up the stairs, no matter what. I think that was his way of telling me, "We've got to go back up. "When I got to the top of the stairs, I turned around and saw a light on, but I didn't remember leaving one on. I walked downstairs again, and that's when I saw fire. I immediately shouted to my wife to wake up and get our three kids. I grabbed a knife and cut out the plastic that covered the window to the porch roof. I then pried open the window and kicked out the screen. I started screaming for help. But help never came. I got everybody out on the roof and threw a blanket out there so we wouldn't slip off. It was cold, January cold. Then I started screaming for help. But help never came.

Now, I'm scared of heights and have physical issues, what with my rheumatoid arthritis, but I couldn't let my family burn up. So I jumped off the roof. I didn't scoot to the edge; I just jumped and got the wind knocked out of me when I landed. I found our ladder, placed it against the house, and climbed back up to the roof. I wrapped my arms around my daughter and carried my nine - month - old with my teeth, by his little sleeper. Then I climbed down the ladder. Once on the ground, I had my little girl hold her brother, and I went back up to the roof to get my other daughter. Then I went back up again and got my wife. I tried to get my dog, but he just disappeared in the black smoke. I never saw him alive again,

I'm no hero. I'm just an ordinary person who'd help anybody. This happened to be the time when I helped my own family. I live to protect my family. Just likeRock—he lived to protect us.
