1 . You may have heard of the Red Cross. It is an organization that helps people who are in need. It may be because of a flood, a war or an earthquake. No matter how bad the situation is, it will always be there to help! But it hasn’t always been this way. For example, in the United States, but for the passion (热情) of a woman named Clara Barton, the American Red Cross may have never been formed!
When Clara was young, she was very shy. One day when she was 11 years old, her elder brother, David, was badly injured. He was ill for two years. Clara cared for him the whole time. Through this experience she learned something very valuable about herself. She found out that she came alive when she cared for others.
Soon, Clara began taking care of injured animals. Neighbors began bringing their pets to her. And almost always, she made them better. When she was older, she became a nurse in the American Civil War and she helped save hundreds of soldiers.
After the Civil War, Clara went to Europe for a holiday. But that did not last long. Soon she began caring for soldiers in battle once again! But this time, she learned about an organization called the Red Cross which worked alongside her on the battlefield. Its task was to help those who needed it most.
She believed that the Red Cross was badly needed in America. Over several years, she asked different Presidents to bring the Red Cross to America. They all said no. But then, thanks to her persistence, one of the Presidents changed his mind! And the American Red Cross was born.

3 . Places to avoid travelling
India
The main distinction in wealth and class may explain some of the risk of crimes in this country. But according to John Gobbels, vice president and chief operating officer for Medjet (an international emergency service), it’s medical safety that actually makes India so dangerous. He explains that the U. S. State Department gives the country Level 2 travel advisory status. (Level 1 means you should exercise normal precautions(预防措施);Level 4 is “ do not go ” .)
Hawaii
Considering this destination is a very hot spot for honeymooners, it might be surprising to see the Big Island of Hawaii as a dangerous place to visit. The eruption of a volcano has put Kilauea in a state of emergency, with poisonous gas, lava flows, and earthquakes all a risk. You’ll likely see special airline deals cancelled, so think twice before making this flight.
Acapulco
This beach resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast isn’t exactly the white-sand party destination it once was. With a Level 4 travel advisory, Gobbels explains, it’s in the same category as places like Iran, Syria, and North Korea. It’s regarded as the murder capital of the country.
Cairo, Egypt
According to a recent report from the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Cairo is considered the most insecure city for women in the world. Even though the political tensions are easing in this area, according to Gobbels, sexual violence and cultural expectations make it extremely problematic, for both locals and visitors.

D.The flights to Hawaii may be changeable due to the eruption of the volcano. |
4 . What will man be like in the future--in 5000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example, Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald (光秃的).
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. But in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.
1. The passage mainly tells us that ________.A.humans needn't wear glasses in the future. |
B.man's life will be different in the future. |

C.thought and observation | D.thought and emotion |
5 . John,a very thin boy, loved football with all his heart when he was very young.Practice after practice,he eagerly gave everything he had.But being half the size of the other boys,he could only sit on the bench and hardly ever played in games.Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always standing with cheers and encouraging him.
When John went to college, he decided to try out for the football team as a “walk-on”.Everyone was sure he could never make the cut,but he did.The coach thought he could provide the other members with the spirit they needed.
The news that he had survived the cut excited him so much that he rushed to the nearest phone and called his father. His father shared his excitement and was sent season tickets for all the college games.
It was the end of this last football season. One day John received a telegram and asked one week off.Nobody knew what happened except the coach. The coach said,“Don't plan to come back to the game on Saturday.”
Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well:When the team was ten points behind,John came back.“Coach, please let me play.I’ve just got to play today,”said John. The coach pretended not to hear him.But John persisted, and finally feeling sorry for the kid,the coach gave in.
Before long everyone could not believe their eyes. John was doing everything to fight. The opposing team could not stop him. He ran, he passed and blocked like a star. And at last his team won the game.
After the game,John looked at the coach, with tears in his eyes, and said,“Well, you knew my dad died, but did you know that my dad was blind?''John swallowed hard and forced a smile, “Dad came to all my games, but today was the first time he could see me play, and I wanted to show him that I could do it.”

6 . It is reported that a record-breaking high-speed rail will connect Inner Mongolia in the north to Hainan in the south. According to the Shaanxi Development and Reform Commission, the proposed line will operate at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour(217 mph).
Beginning in Inner Mongolia's Baotou city and running through southern Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi and Guangdong, its final stop would be in Haikou city on Hainan Island,China's southernmost province.
Though the exact length of the proposed route has not been released,it will likely become the world's longest high-speed rail line as the journey by road between Baotou and Haikou is approximately 3,000 kilometers(1,864 miles) long. Currently, the world's longest high-speed rail line is almost 2,300 kilometers long (1,429 miles), running from Beijing to Guangzhou.
The proposed rail is part of China's aim to create another "Silk Road of the 21st Century" and improve the country's transportation network while driving land development and urbanization(城市化) in some provincial areas.
Many of the provinces through which the high-speed trains will travel are near major bodies of water, such as the Yellow River in Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi province, the Yangtzi River in Hubei and the South China Sea, where the line would end. It will also take passengers to popular tourist attractions including Zhangjiajie,Xi'an,Guilin and minority areas in western Hunan and Hubei.
"The country is now shifting its focus and investing in the western regions and economically underdeveloped areas, making up for China's long debt to these areas," Tan yuzhi, professor of the School of Economics and Management at Hubei University for Nationalities, told local media. " The project will significantly narrow regional disparities(差异) and solve minority issues."
However,Deng Hongbing, director of China University of Geosciences' Center for Regional Economic and Investment Center, said that if the north-to-south railway is to go ahead, there needs to be a sound ecological program in place to ensure the protection of these underdeveloped and ecologically sensitive areas.

7 . Record fires sweeping across the Amazon this month have been catching global headlines as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will worsen climate change and threaten biodiversity(生物多样性).
As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is often called “the lungs of the world”. It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million local people. The vast lands of rainforest play an important role in the world’s ecosystem because they take in heat instead of it being reflected back into the atmosphere. They also store carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)and produce oxygen, making sure that less carbon is given off, mitigating the effects of climate change.
“Any forest destroyed is a threat to biodiversity and the people who use that biodiversity,” Thomas Lovejoy, an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic. “The shocking threat is that a lot of carbon goes into the atmosphere,” he stressed. “Facing the global climate change, we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected,” U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.
Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August this year from a year ago. A total of 71,497 forest fires were recorded in the country in the first eight months of 2019, up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018, INPE said. “It’s reported that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon have decreased something between 20 and 30 percent compared to the last 12 months,” Carlos Nobre, a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose drop could have severe results for global climate and rainfall. The size of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has transcended(超出)Brazil’s borders, reaching Peruvian, Paraguayan and Bolivian areas.

9 . Most people are good at recognizing the universal facial expressions of our emotions 一 anger, joy, sadness, etc., which present a lot of emotional information. In fact, there are less obvious facial expressions called micro-expressions (MEs). Huma n beings often show them and communicate their private thoughts to others unconsciously (无意识的).What's more, people cannot hide them, including the experienced ones. And MEs have universality (普遍性), regardless of one's age, religion or culture.
All the findings lead to the possibilities of MEs' wide use in different fields, where people can use MEs to understand other people's true feelings, thoughts, or beliefs. Police can use MEs to detect unnatural behavior. Teachers can recognize unease in students and give a more careful explanation. Businessmen can use expressions of happiness to determine when they have given a suitable price. When one wants to be able to do what are mentioned above, it is useful to be able to read MEs.
However, MEs are difficult to read, because they are unconscious, and occur sometimes as fast as one-tenth of a second or even one-fifteenth of a second. At present, even highly trained persons are not always able to notice them. Some people do see something that has changed on the face, but they don't know exactly what it is that has changed. Since the human recognition accuracy (精准)is so low, a possible method for spotting MEs would be very precious.
1. Which word can replace the underlined word "detect” in Paragraph 2?A.Discover. | B.Show. |
C.Govern. | D.Affect. |
A.Absence of training. |
B.MEs' short existence. |

10 . ""May I speak with Jeanne Kerr?" I said, crossing my fingers
"Who's asking?" the voice rose.
“It's Regina Louise, I think we may've met "I don't believe so," the stranger said, hanging up the phone.
I crossed out another Jeanne from my long list. The first time I met Jeanne was May 1, 1975 at Edgar Children's Shelter where I was disliked by all the social workers except Jeanne.
The last time I saw Jeanne was in 1977. I was 15 years old, standing in a courtroom (法 庭),asking the court to allow Jeanne Kerr to adopt (收养)me. However, Jeanne's request to adopt me was refused because she was white and I was black. Then 1 was placed in a treatment center for disturbed girls .
By 2002, at age 40, I operated two successful hair salons. I wrote a book about my early teenage years from 13 to 15, a story that followed me through meeting Jeanne and losing her.
One evening, I checked my email and came across the words: "I am so proud of you, sweetheart!" My heart stopped. I opened the email, and it was from Jeanne . An old co-worker of hers had read my book and called Jeanne to tell her "Your Regina is looking for you.”
I dialed the number given in the email immediately. We chatted a lot excitedly. At last, she told me, “I want to make you my daughter.
Three weeks later, I stood in the same courtroom where Jeanne's first request to adopt me had been refused. After the judge told us to live with and love one another as mother and daughter for the rest of our lives, I turned to Jeanne and whispered, "Thank you 一 Mommy 一 for loving me, when no one else could."
