文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者几次游览长城的经历和不同感受。

1 . Before coming to China, the Great Wall held a mysterious and poetic quality for me. I had seen it in photos, in films and read about it in books, but my first experience of the wall gave me a very different impression. In 2014, I visited the Badaling section, certainly an attractive place with some incredible views, but perhaps due to the large number of tourists, the massive restorations and tourist facilities, it felt far different from the impression I had built up in my mind.

I have been to many different sections of the wall since then, but none have matched my high expectations until the recent National Day holiday. I decided to hike along the Jiankou section of the wall which rises more than 1,000 meters above sea level, and camp overnight to be able to take in both the sunset and sunrise.

Arriving at the top of the path, the only access point to get on to the wall itself was a ladder made of tree branches tied together with string. I climbed to one of the highest points on the wall in order to catch the sunset. Being completely alone on this unique and dangerous section of the wall, witnessing the sunset behind the mountains, was a truly unique experience.

I woke up expecting to be able to catch the sunrise, however, my weather app failed me. Getting out of the tent, I could hardly see my hand in front of my face as the whole area was covered in a thick fog. I made the decision to climb back to the top of the wall. The vast mountains with the wall cutting a path along them became visible for a few brief moments as the gusts of wind parted the clouds. In that moment, the image of the wall I had built up in my mind was finally realized. The combination of raw nature, geography and architecture are all in balance with one another. Undoubtedly, I will return to the wall and seek out new paths, but this experience will be matchless.

B.He enjoyed the unique sunset on his own.

3. What did the author think of the Great Wall in the last paragraph?
A.Disappointing.B.Terrible.C.Ordinary.D.Amazing.
4. What does the author want to tell us by sharing his experiences?
A.Nature reveals its true beauty of the Great Wall.

3 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida.

Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had shown me how to knit a scarf (织围巾). She showed me stitches and gave me her half done project. I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.

Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it’s freezing outside!” then he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

5 . It was Christmas Eve when my elder sister and I decided to open our presents before our mom got home from work. She usually came home about an hour after we got home from school, which we thought was plenty of time to sneak a look (偷看) at the gifts under the tree.

My elder sister opened present after present while I was ordered to stand guard at the big window in our front room. Finally, when my sister’s curiosity was satisfied, we changed places.

After opening a few presents, I found it faster to open one end of a present and look inside. “Cool! Mom and Dad got me headphones!” I pulled the headphones out of the box and was about to put them on when my sister shouted, “Quick! Wrap (包裹) it back up! Mom’s coming!”

I put the headphones back in the box but my hands were shaking. My heart beat faster as I tried to get the tape to stick. I had just finished burying the package with my headphones in it when my mother came into the front room. I jumped up and said, “Hi, Mom!” She smiled at me and said “Hi” back, but didn’t appear to suspect (怀疑) anything. My heart began to slow as I took a deep breath.

On Christmas morning, my sister and I smiled, and gave award-winning performances when we opened our presents—again. “Headphones!” I shouted. “Thanks, it’s just what I wanted.” After everything had been opened, my sister and I looked at each other, and our eyes met. Our secret was safe, but somehow Christmas morning didn’t feel the same.

My sister and I never opened our Christmas presents early again. I don’t know if it was that opening our gifts for the second time just wasn’t as much fun as the first time, or if we came too close to getting caught and didn’t want to think about what our mother would have done to us.

A.They bought some Christmas presents.
B.They hid Christmas presents under the tree.

A.He didn’t like the headphones.B.He regretted what he had done.

6 . The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports enthusiast, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch. Come fall, our backyard football games began with passing practice.

Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games, accelerating (加速) my competitive fever. However, in girls’ sports games at my school, I was no star. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. School sports did not bleed into the weekends, as they do today, but at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare funds to use to join a gym.

So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation evolved in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered essential even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.

文章大意:本文是说明文。讲述了瑞典发表在《科学报告》杂志上的一项新研究发现,养狗与降低患心脏病和死亡的风险有关。

8 . Can getting a dog help people live longer? Dog ownership is associated with a reduced risk for heart related disease and death, finds a new Swedish study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

For people living alone, owning a dog can decrease their risk of death by 33% and their risk of heart related death by 36%, when compared to single individuals without a pet, according to the study. Chances of a heart attack were also found to be 11% lower. Multi-person household owners also saw benefits, though to a lesser extent. Risk of death among these dog owners fell by 11% and their chances of heart-related death were 15% lower. But their risk of a heart attack was not reduced by owning a dog.

As a single dog owner, an individual is the only person walking and interacting with their pet, which may contribute to greater protection from heart-related disease and death, said the study. “We know that dog owners in general have a higher level of physical activity. which could be one explanation to the observe results,” said Fall, author of the study. The findings also suggest increased social well-being and immune system development as additional reasons why dog ownership offers protection against heart-related disease and death.

Fall believes that while their study provides strong evidence for the health benefits of dogs, their work is not done yet, since it does not answer why dogs achieve these results. There are also other factors that still need to be considered, such as the owner’s personality and general physical health and activity.

While the research was carried out in Sweden. Fall does believe it may also apply to other countries including the US, since people’s attitudes toward dog care are similar. However, some factors that may affect the results are the differences in climate and socioeconomic backgrounds. “We have a colder climate so we have indoor dogs where owners take their dogs out for a walk, In warmer climates, they could keep them in the yard and won’t have to actively take them for a walk. I think it would be hard to take the data from Sweden and apply it to the US since we have a more different population. More studies should be obtained in the United States,” said Fall.

1. Why does the writer ask a question at the beginning of the passage?
A.To express his doubt.B.To get the correct answer.
C.To test readers’ knowledge.D.To introduce the topic.
2. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.The benefits of raising dogs for single people.
B.The disadvantages of raising animals for their owners.
C.The figures the writer provides to support the research.
D.The importance of owning pets for all kinds of people.
3. What is the finding of the new study?
A.Walking and interacting with pets contributes to their owners’ health.
B.Single individuals without a pet have a lower risk of heart-related death.
C.The pet owner’s personality and activity have little to do with his/her health.
D.Keeping dogs can help owners free from cancer and heart-related disease.
4. What can we know from Fall’s words?
A.The research carried out in Sweden may apply to all countries.
B.Warmer climates make it unnecessary for dog owners to walk them.
C.There is no need to do more research in the United States.
D.Climate and socioeconomic backgrounds may influence the research.
