1 . I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known. I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all, I was a teenage girl, and I could not bear people to look at me and think I was not like them. I must have been a terrible danger on the roads. Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to stop rapidly on their brakes. Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.

One evening, I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something. “I’m awfully sorry,” I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time, I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost (街灯柱). This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me. So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off. No one else was there and I had to guess if the bus had arrived.

Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help, I tried to guess at the sound. Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drew away. In the end, I usually managed to swallow (吞下) my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.

But at this particular evening no one joined me at the stop; it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus. Of course I heard plenty of buses pass, or I thought I did. But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself, I let them all go by. I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up. I decided to walk on to the next stop.

1. The girl refused to ask for help because she thought ________.
A.she might be recognizedB.asking for help looked silly
C.being found blind was embarrassingD.she was normal and independent
2. After the girl got off the bus that evening, she ________.
A.began to runB.hit a lamppost by accident
C.hit a person as usualD.was caught by something
3. Finally the girl decided to walk to the next stop, hoping ________.
A.to find more buses thereB.to find people there
C.to find the bus by herself thereD.to find people more helpful there

2 . Billions of insects are moving together over the sky like a black cloud. It’s a swarm of locusts. Many insects move in huge swarms. They form swarms for different reasons. Some move together to look for food or to find new homes. Sometimes insects swarm for protection. These enormous swarms can destroy food crops and harm other living things.

When something disturbs a red fire ants’ nest, out they will come. Not just one or two, but thousands of them. The fire ants swarm all over their victim. Their stings burn like fire. Each ant in the swarm can sting over and over again. The fire ants hold onto their victim with their mouth parts. Then they inject their prey with poison. Most small animals cannot survive the stings from a swarm of fire ants.

When army ants are on the move, anything in their path is prey. Even snakes can’t escape a swarm of these stinging ants. Army ants move together to look for food. They can’t see their prey, but they use smells and sounds to find their way. If they come to a river, they make a bridge with their bodies. They cling together with their legs. Then the rest of the ants can cross the bridge. There is not much that can stop these fierce and cruel ants from chasing their prey.

Insects are not the only animals that swarm. There are many others that do. Most are not harmful to people. Being close to a huge swarm of animals can be scary and dangerous. Some scientists have studied animal swarms. They have found that many swarms follow simple rules. They work together to solve problems. When they work together they are a very strong team.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了计算机技术的演变和微型机器人的相关知识,包括其定义、尺寸、潜在应用以及目前面临的挑战等。

6 . Over the decades, computers have affected our lives to an astonishing degree. When the first modern computer was conceptualized and built in the 20th century, it was so large that it took up a whole room. Over time, the technology shrank. First, computers became small enough to sit on a desk and be brought into the home. Then, they were made lightweight and portable, giving us the laptop. Today, most people have something even smaller: a smartphone that can fit into a pocket.

Though that's as compact as most people are used to, computers and technology are getting even tinier! One of the tiniest forms of technology available today is the microbot. A microbot is a very tiny robot -a machine programmable by a computer—that is built to perform specific tasks. You might tend to refer to this as just a small robot, but the size and dimensions of microbots are actually quite precise. A microbot is less than one millimeter in width, approximately the size of the tip of a pencil. In comparison, a small robot, which can be up to 100 centimeters in width, would be absolutely large. If you think that microbots are as small as you can get, think again. Nanobots smaller than one micrometer exist, but these are so small that they aren't visible to the naked eye(肉眼).

Since microbots are so small, they are potentially very cheap. Scientists and engineers working to develop these microbots believe that they could be used to explore environments or areas that are too small or dangerous for people.

Because the computing power of one single microbot isn't that large, microbots could be moved and used in large groups. At the moment, the biggest barrier to the development of these tiny machines is figuring out how to power a robot that can only contain an extremely small battery.

1. What does the underlined word “shrank” in Paragraph I probably mean?
A.got more Automatic.B.became smaller.
C.got wiser.D.became larger.
2. What can we know about microbots?
A.They can be used to do risky tasks.B.They are relatively expensive.
C.They can't be seen by the human eyes.D.They aren't as precise as expected.
3. What is the key to the future development of the tiny robots?
A.Its function.B.Its material.
C.Its battery power.D.Its maintenance cost.
4. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.How Small the Technology Can GetB.How Robots Change Our Future Lives
C.Why Human Beings Prefer Tiny TechnologyD.Why Microbots Are Widely Used Worldwide

Online voting has become so     1     (increase) popular that many people get involved in it. It is beneficial to some people, while it puts others into a dilemma over whether to vote or not.

In my opinion, online voting is     2     inseparable part of modern life and should be welcomed, since it is no     3     (much) than a way to participate in public life. There is very little     4     (different) between it and ordinary voting events, in     5     candidates go around to seek supports. To be honest, voters sometimes feel annoyed,     8     because they hate voting, but because they are divided between emotion and fairness. 9 . Stop Spam!

When I first got an e-mail account over ten years ago, I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail, I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.    1    and we need specific laws that make spamming (发送垃圾邮件) a crime.

2    , the problem will certainly get much worse. Computer programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly.    3     so individual e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails. Would people continue to use e- mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time?

This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well.    4    . Companies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other. Spam frequently causes failures in their local communication networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively. Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks.

For these reasons,    5    . Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people. E-mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.

A.We want e-mail to continue to be useful
B.If people have to deal with an annoying spam
C.I believe that lawmakers need to legislate against spam
D.If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam
E.More and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products
F.Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a company
G.These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are passed on to the consumer
