文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了和室友一起住有很多好处,作者鼓励大家找一个室友共同生活,可以让彼此更加健康和幸福。

1 . Many of us live with a roommate at some stage. Sometimes, there can be problems. Who hasn’t had an argument about whose turn it is to take out the rubbish or who should be the one to clear up after dinner? However, living with another person also comes with many benefits.

You know that there’s always someone else around, which can help you feel safer. There is always someone to talk to so you never feel lonely. Besides these obvious benefits, there are some you may not notice. For example, we’re actually more likely to eat healthier food when living with others.

To examine the effect of living alone, Australian university researchers did much research and found that people living alone tended to eat less fresh food, which can have a significant negative effect on long-term health. However, those living with others generally benefited from a more varied diet compared to those living alone.

What could explain these findings? The researchers believe the social and cultural roles played by cooking, food preparation and eating may be important considerations. For example, those living with friends have someone else to go shopping with, and thus they are likely to buy higher- quality fresh food regularly.

Cooking skills may be another factor. If people living alone find they do not have the knowledge required to prepare a particular dish or cook a certain food, they may fall back on ready-made,less healthy food. However, if they live with at least one other person, they may be able to ask for help.

In addition, people living alone can eat whatever they want at any time of the day or night. However, it’s helpful to have someone around who questions your decision to eat frozen pizza at 3 am. In other words, roommates can draw your attention to unhealthy routines.

1. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The reasons for living with others
B.The ways of dealing with a roommate.
C.The importance of talking with others.
D.The benefits of living with someone else.
2. How many reasons are explored to explain the new findings?

3. What does the underlined phrase “fall back on” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Hunt for.B.Cut down on.C.Depend on.D.Give up.
4. What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To tell readers every coin has two sides.

C.To explain why roommates have arguments.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了三种新的私人浏览器的不同点。

3 . Most of us use web browsers(浏览器)out of habit. However, there are a lot of similar apps for us to choose in the appstore. They serve the same purpose: visiting a website. So if the differences are minimal, why bother looking for something else?

As a matter of fact, a new type of internet navigator(导航器), called a private browser, has emerged over the last three years. What stands out is that they minimize the data gathered about us by blocking the technologies used to track us, when most mainstream browsers, such as Chrome from Google, have been trying to develop a new way to target us with ads.

Private browsers generally rely on something called private mode, which is a browsing session that does not record a history of the websites you have visited. Firefox Focus, DuckDuckGo and Brave are all similar private browsers, but with some important differences.

Firefox Focus, available only for mobile devices like iPhones and Android smartphones, is the basic one. You input a web address and, when done browsing, hit the trash icon to erase the session. Quitting the app automatically purges the history.

The DuckDuckGo browser, also available only for mobile devices, is more like a traditional browser. The company says it is more focused on privacy because its ads do not track people’s online behavior. When done browsing, you can hit the flame icon at the bottom to erase the session.

Brave is also more like a traditional web browser. It includes a private mode that must be turned on if you don’t want people scrutinizing(仔细检查)your web history. Brave is so aggressive about blocking trackers that in the process, it almost always blocks ads entirely. The other private browsers block ads less frequently.

For most people, not seeing ads is undoubtedly a benefit. Brendan Eich, the chief executive of Brave, said, “If everybody used Brave, it would wipe out the tracking-based ad economy”.

Count me in.

1. How does the author feel about private browsers?

2. What makes private browsers different from mainstream browsers?
A.Private browsers can recommend personalized ads.

3. What does the underlined word “purges” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

However, just about ten minutes after the game started, one member of our football team got injured and could no longer play. The other members looked worried. 5 . Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens research into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archeologists (考古学家) says. In a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Clarke, 40 archaeologists write of their “deep and widespread concern” about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age. The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.

“Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,” they write.

The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig including the remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC. Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually the bones will have to he returned to the ground.

The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans 950,000 years ago. If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was. Under the current practice of the law those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed.

Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.

Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said: “Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.”

The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.

1. According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because       .
A.it is only a temporary measure on the human remains
B.it was introduced by the government without their knowledge
C.it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific research
D.it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains
2. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.
B.Human remains of the oldest species were dug out at Happisburgh.
C.Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.
D.Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.
3. What can be inferred about the British law governing human remains?
A.The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.
B.The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.
C.The law on human remains hasn’t changed in recent decades.
D.The Ministry of Justice did not intend it to protect human remains.
4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.New discoveries should be reburied, the government demands.
B.Law could bury ancient secrets for ever, archeologists warn.
C.Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.
D.Research time should be extended, scientists require.

One fall evening, 13-year-old Briar Omar agreed to look after his four younger sisters when his parents went to the grocery store to pick up the family dinner. The parents were confident that responsible big brother Briar with their protective dog called Mandy, was capable of managing the family in their absence. During that brief time, an unexpected thing happened: The home suddenly went up in flames(火焰). It was up to Briar and Mandy to save his family.

The children smelled smoke soon after their parents left for the store. They turned around to search for where the fire came from and were shocked and frightened to find their baby sister’s playpen(玩耍护栏) on fire.

The first thought that came to Briar’s mind was to rescue his little sisters. The family had previously discussed what to do in the face of danger, so he was prepared to act.
