文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要介绍了意大利伟大的画家Giotto di Bondone,他给绘画带来的思想彻底改变了艺术界,使他成为有史以来最伟大的画家之一。

2 . Cimabue, the greatest painter of a Middle Ages in Italy, was surprised one day after his lunch break to discover that a fly had seated itself under the nose of a character that he had been working on. He swatted (重拍) at the fly, but it did not move. He reached out to touch the insect, only to find it was only wet paint. Turning around, he saw that his apprentice (学徒), Giotto, was laughing. Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.

Giotto di Bondone was born into a poor family in a village. Legend has it that one day, when Cimabue was wandering around the countryside, he spotted a young shepherd boy drawing pictures of his sheep, which were so vivid that Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence and learn how to paint. That was how Giotto’s story began in Florence, where the young student flourished under Cimabue’s instruction and soon surpassed his master in skill.

At that time, people in paintings didn’t look real, and the symbolism of art was difficult for viewers to connect with it. Innovation (创新) was not stressed, so art had remained the same for hundreds of years.

However, Giotto thought art should be something more connected with people in a more realistic way. His masterpieces included the forty major frescoes (壁画) for the Arena Chapel. Adopting many techniques that were uncommon then, he painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times.

In addition to painting, Giotto wrote poetry and drew architectural plans. When Giotto was in his sixties, he painted the Ognissanti Madonna, another famous work of art. He continued working until the age of seventy. The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.

1. What does the anecdote in paragraph 1 tell us about Giotto?
A.His humor.B.His talent.C.His courage.D.His determination.
2. How did Cimabue feel about Giotto’s painting when they first met?
A.Impressed.B.Hesitant.C.Doubtful.D.Amused.
3. What made Giotto’s works distinguished at that time?
A.Vivid colors.B.Classic skills.
C.Original composition.D.Lifelike quality.
4. Which of the following best summarizes Giotto’s story?
A.Great minds think alike.
B.Innovation is the vitality of art.
C.Constant dripping wears away a stone.
D.A slow sparrow should make an early start.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了成年人容易分心,对此科学家研究了导致分心的原因并给出了一些有助于保持专注的方法。

3 . When you were at school, were you ever told to stop daydreaming and concentrate? It was easy for your mind to wander if you weren’t interested in what you were learning or if you had better things to think about. Staying focused can still be a challenge in adult life, but understanding how to do it, and knowing what is distracting you, can help.

Scientists have looked at what makes us delay and found a number of ways to help us stay in the zone. One of the most obvious things is eliminating noise. Research by Science Focus magazine found silence is the best for concentration, or a gentle background hum and coffee shop noise is great! It also found turning off notifications on your phone, or switching it off altogether, removes a major distraction and helps us focus on the task at hand.

Another possible cure for a short attention span is brain training. Psychologists and neuroscientists are increasingly interested in our ability to settle down and have looked at what we can change inside our head to make us concentrate. An article for BBC Future by Caroline Williams says that “Attention Researcher Nilli Lavie of University College London has found that making a task more visually demanding takes up more processing power and leaves the brain nothing left to process distractions.” So, keeping your mind busy might be the answer.

There are more practical tips to keeping your mind focused. These include making a list or timetable of the tasks you have to do, finding a workspace where you’re not tempted to do other things, or chewing some gum! It’s possible the movement in your mouth occupies parts of the brain that might otherwise get distracted.

But according to Science Focus magazine, distraction isn’t all bad. “If we were always so focused that we never go distracted, we’d miss potential changes, such as threats, in our environment. Distraction is vital for survival.”

1. Which of the following is similar to the underlined phrase in paragrapb 2?
A.Concerned.B.Enthusiastic.C.Calm.D.Absorbed.
2. Why does the author suggest keeping our mind busy?
A.To introduce a mental recovery.
B.To explain the cause of distraction.
C.To recommend a kind of intelligence training.
D.To suggest a way to train the brain to concentrate.
3. What is Science Focus magazine’s attitude to distraction?
A.Contradictory.B.All-sided.C.Doubtful.D.Puzzling.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.How to Stay FocusedB.The Harm of Distraction
C.The Research about DistractionD.The Benefits of Keeping Focused

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了一项重要的研究,研究发现在学习中,学生在教学中学习更有助于提高学生的学习效率。

4 . Many studies have shown the learning-by-teaching effect. Students who spend time teaching what they’ve learned show better understanding and ability to remember knowledge than students who simply spend the same time re-studying. But why does teaching help?

Researchers did a study to test their idea that teaching improves the teacher’s learning because it forces the teacher to find back what they’ve learned. They asked 124 students to spend ten minutes studying a text with numbers on a topic which is completely new to them. They told the students they could take notes while studying, but would teach the material afterwards without notes. After studying the text, the students were divided into four groups. In one group the students spent five minutes giving a lesson on the study material without notes. The other groups either spent the same time completing arithmetic (算术) problems, teaching with a script (讲稿) or writing down all they could remember from the text—a form of recalling practice. A week later, all the students took a surprise test of their knowledge and understanding of the text.

The important finding is that the teaching-without-notes group and the recalling-practice group performed better than the group that completed arithmetic problems and the group that taught with a script.

The researchers said the result shows that the benefits of the learning-by-teaching method are caused by recalling practice; that is, the learning-by-teaching method works only when the teaching includes recalling the taught materials.

The new findings have a practical suggestion for how the learning-by-teaching method is used in education. In order to make sure that students learn and remember an educational material, they should internalize (内化) the material before presenting it to others, rather than depend on notes during the presentation process.

1. Why does the author give a question in Paragraph 1?
A.To look for readers’ answer.B.To introduce the topic.
C.To keep a sense of mystery.D.To show off his knowledge.
2. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Why the study started.B.How the study was done.
C.How many people joined in the study.D.What conclusion the researchers made.
3. What should be stressed in school education according to the author?
A.Previewing-by-teaching.B.Note-taking.
C.Learning-by-teaching.D.Mind-mapping.
4. Where is the text probably from?
A.A history textbook.B.A newspaper.

6 . Do you want to ensure your child hits their expected developmental milestones? New UBC research suggests living in areas with high exposure to green space can help set them up for success.

For the study, the researchers at UBC analyzed the developmental scores of 27,372 children in Metro Vancouver who attended kindergarten between 2005 and 2011.They estimated the amount of green space around each child’s residence from birth to age five. They also assessed levels of traffic-related air pollution and community noise.

The results highlight the fundamental importance of natural green spaces like street trees, parks and community gardens. “Most of the children were doing well in their development, in terms of language skills, cognitive (认知的) capacity, socialization and other outcomes,” says Ingrid Jarvis, a PhD candidate in the department of forest and conservation sciences at UBC. “But what’s interesting is that those children living in a residential location with more vegetation and richer natural environments showed better overall development than their peers with less green space.”

According to the researchers, the reason for this is partly green spaces’ ability to reduce the harmful effects of air pollution and noise - environmental challenges that have been shown to adversely (不利地) affect children’s health and development through increased stress, sleep disturbances and central nervous system damage. “Few studies have investigated this pathway linking green space and developmental outcomes among children,” adds Jarvis.

The researchers assessed early childhood development using the Early Development Instrument (EDI), a survey completed by kindergarten teachers for each child. The tool measures a child’s ability to meet age-appropriate developmental expectations.

“More research is needed, but our findings suggest that urban planning efforts to increase green space in residential neighbourhoods and around schools are beneficial for early childhood development, with potential health benefits throughout life,” says the study’s senior author Matilda Bosch. “Time in nature can benefit everyone, but if we want our children to have a good head start, it’s important to provide an enriching environment through nature contact.”

1. Which is a key factor in the researchers’ study?
A.The kids’ scores from school exams.
B.The average IQ score of the subjects.
C.The green space where the kids lived.
D.The air pollution level of the whole city.

A.Air pollution is largely to blame for kids’ failures.
B.Kids living in a noisy area tend to feel more stressed.
C.Pollution harms kids’ nervous system more than noise.
D.Greenspace is directly linked to kids’ mental development.
3. What does Matilda Bosch stress in the last paragraph?
A.The importance of nature in kids’ growth.
B.The role of research in scientific work.
C.The proper way of giving a good start to kids.
D.The urgency of expanding greenspace in cities.
4. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A.What Are the Health Effects of Noise Pollution?
B.Green Spaces: A guarantee for Kids’ Future Success
C.Urban Green Space and Its Impact on Human Health
D.Time in Nature Aids Early Childhood Development

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章解释了在坚持锻炼并进行健康饮食的同时,体重不降反增的原因。

7 . Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds? “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.

“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.

The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.

You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.

So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.

1. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2?
A.Your weight changes little during a day.
B.Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C.Your workout is not effective if you gain weight.
D.Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
2. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months?
A.You will weigh more.
B.Your muscle mass will decrease.
C.Your body fat will increase.
D.Your body composition will change.
3. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body?
A.30 pounds.B.60 pounds.
C.100 pounds.D.140 pounds.
4. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.Why Do We Gain Weight?
B.How to Work Out Effectively?
C.What Is the Composition of Our Body?
D.Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain?
