文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了可以和父母更好沟通的几条建议。

3 . Communication Tips

Here are some suggestions about making your talk with your parents turn out for the best.

Be honest.

If you’re always honest, your parents will be likely to believe what you say. If you sometimes hide the truth, parents will have a harder time to believe what you tell them.    1

Be brave and start talking.

It’s easy to say “Hi, Mum” or “Dad, can you pass the potatoes?”     2       Let’s face it. You will feel embarrassed (尴尬的)when talking about something personal, but your parents know you quite well. They were your age once, too! So don’t let a little embarrassment stop you. It’s OK to go ahead and share what’s on your mind.

    3

If you have a disagreement, can you consider things from your parents’ points of view? If you can, telling your parents you understand their views and feelings helps them be willing to understand yours, too.

Try not to argue.

Using a friendly and respectful tone makes your parents more likely to listen to you and take what you say seriously.     4

What if it doesn’t work? If you still can’t talk to your parents, seek other adults’ help.    5     Then follow all the tips above to make you communicate with that person well.

A.Explain your situation.
B.Try to understand them.
C.If you lie, they’ll find it hard to trust you.
D.Parents are the most important people in your life.
E.But it can be harder to start talking about personal topics.
F.It also makes it more likely that they’ll talk to you in the same way.
G.Find a relative or a teacher who will listen to, understand and care about you.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了《星球大战》对电影制作的影响。

5 . How Star Wars Changed Movie-making Forever

“May the force be with you!” If you are a Star Wars fan, then you have probably heard this phrase many times.     1     So many characters, devices, and phrases from the movie have become well-known. But you might be surprised to find out how much this movie has changed how movies are made.

“A long time ago in a galaxy (银河系) far, far away...”is how Star Wars begins. Its plot was not creative.

2     The story was typical science fiction with lots of drama, traditional characters and good battling evil, in space and in hand-to-hand fight.

It was the special effects that made Star Wars much better than other movies. People still talk about the light swords (剑) that could cut, burn and melt through most substances. Spaceships sped through space and landed on huge, realistic-looking space stations.     3     When Star Wars first came out in 1977, most movie theaters were stand-alone (单独的) buildings, with just one movie screen. Using the money Star Wars had made for them, movie-theater owners built more theaters, leading to the multiplexes (多影厅影院) that are common today.

Theaters needed more movies to show on all the additional movie screens and in all the new multiplexes. So new movie companies sprang up, including small ones creating experimental movies.     4     Some of the methods became popular and others failed. But, thanks to Star Wars, people got to see new types of movies.

5     There had been movie continuations (续篇) before, but they were often just poor imitations of the first movie. The Star Wars movies were all popular. There have been two trilogies (三部曲) so far, with more planned.

A.They tried out new techniques.
B.In fact, it was quite old-fashioned.
C.Audience had never seen anything like these.
D.Thus, audience began to enjoy science fiction movies there.
E.Star Wars was the first really successful movie trilogy in history.
F.If you are not a fan, you are still likely familiar with these words.
G.If you are a movie maker, you may be inspired by this classic film.

7 . A team of researchers has found how to use math to study paintings to learn more about how the art developed in the western world. In their paper published in Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, the group describes how they scanned thousands of paintings and then used mathematical algorithms (算法) to find commonalities between them over time.

Beauty, as the saying goes, is in the eye of the beholder — and so it is also with art. Two people looking at the same painting can walk away with vastly different impressions. The study of art history can serve as a channel — casting light on societal trends over time. The re-searchers further note that to date, most studies of art history have been qualitatively (定性地) based, which has led to the results with prejudice, To overcome it, the researchers with this new effort look to math to see if it might be useful in uncovering features of paintings that have been overlooked by human scholars.

The work involved digitally scanning 14, 912 paintings — all of which ( except for two ) were painted by Western artists. The data for each of the paintings was then sent through a mathematical algorithm that drew partitions on the digital images based on contrasting colors. The researchers ran the algorithm on each painting multiple times, each time creating more sections to study. For example, the first run of the algorithm might have simply created two sections on a painting — everything on land and everything in the sky. The second might have split the land into buildings in one section and farmland in another.

The researchers then ran other algorithms designed to look for patterns between the paintings. Doing so allowed them to see trends like painting styles that predominated during certain eras and long-term trends, such as the placement of the horizon (地平线). The researchers found that over the past several hundred years, painters have been placing it increasingly higher. In the 17th century, the separation between Earth and sky dominated landscapes — those done in more modern times, in sharp contrast, have the horizon very near the top of the painting.

1. Which of the following is the finding of the researchers?
A.A way to research paintings.B.The development of western art.
C.The similarities between art and math.D.A scientific paper on painting and math.
2. What did the researchers expect to do with math?
A.Deepen the impression of paintings.B.Uncover the features of human scholars.
C.Make a more objective study of paintings.D.Interpret the results of painting qualitatively.
3. How were the algorithms carried out?
A.By observing buildings and farmland.B.By linking land paintings with sky paintings.
C.By analyzing the various parts of the paintings.D.By classifying the different colors of the paintings.
4. What can we learn about the location of the horizon in the painting?
A.It has varied over time.
B.It is always very near the top.
C.It was only placed at the bottom in the 17th century.
D.It has not changed over the past several hundred years.

8 . High schools used to teach shop classes, in which students learned skills like woodworking. Nowadays, most schools have traded in shop class in favor of academic subjects. However, the National Science Foundation STEM Guitar Project thinks that academic subjects and carpentry (木匠活) can be combined. This organization aims to get students excited about science, math, and arts all at once, by teaching students how to make a guitar.

Experis forecast that technical skills like this one could be in great demand in the future. Unfortunately, many high schools don’t offer students access to mechanical design skills, due to the fact that they are not on the list of standardized subjects and the schools can’t scientifically assess students’ performance. But, is STEM really needed in order to build a guitar? Actually, it’s impossible to make a guitar without knowing science and math.

Joshua Cruz, a design teacher, said that building a guitar also teaches troubleshooting and problemsolving skills. He thinks the STEM Guitar Project provides opportunities to challenge students to apply their own creativity to STEM problems. “I’m still figuring out how we can apply it,” Cruz explained. “I think we’re going to use a lot of the same theories behind how strings and stringed instruments work and try and get them to make stringed instruments of their own, and thus improve their academic performance.”

Because of its effectiveness and creativity, the guitar initiative was offered the Gerhard Salinger award, which recognizes outstanding STEM school programs. “Through this project, we have become part of this community of businessmen, engineers and artisans,” said Mark French, one of the six people who received the award for his work with STEM guitar. “It’s a great group and I’m pleased to be part of it. I get to combine something I love doing with an activity that really makes the world a little bit better place. It really does help people.”

Thanks to people like Mark French, and to the STEM Guitar Project, the world is a little bit of a better, more educated, and more musical place.

1. Why are mechanical design skills unavailable to high school students?
A.Students are not excited about these skills.
B.Students’ performance can’t be properly evaluated.
C.They are not necessary for the students’ growth.
D.They are of no help to students’ academic performance.
2. What benefit can students get from building a guitar?
A.The ability to find faults with others.
B.The skills of making a guitar independently.
C.The opportunity to challenge scientific theories.
D.The improvement of creativity and learning ability
3. What is the Gerhard Salinger award?
A.It is offered to businessmen and engineers.
B.It is a part of the community of businessmen.
C.It recognizes outstanding STEM school programs.
D.It encourages people to make their own instruments.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.The Combination of Skills
B.The Award for the STEM Guitar Project.
C.The STEM Guitar Project Benefits Students
D.The STEM Guitar Project Promotes Music Education.
