1 . NEW DELHI—Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday inspected the bridge collapse site in the western state of Gujarat, where more than 100 people were killed, officials said. Ahead of the visit, Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Monday night during which he was briefed about rescue efforts.
The century-old British-era pedestrian suspension bridge (吊桥) collapsed on Sunday evening, with hundreds of people falling into Machchhu River in Morbi town, about 241 km west of the capital city, Gandhinagar. Reports said that 177 people were rescued and over 100 people were undergoing treatment at the Morbi civil hospital.
Soon after the bridge visit, Modi reached the civil hospital in Morbi to meet the injured. The prime minister was seen asking the survivors about their health. According to officials, search and rescue operations, carried out by teams of the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian navy, the Indian air force and the Indian army, were called off (取消) on Monday evening and began again on Tuesday morning. Officials said Modi also met with those involved in rescue and relief operations.
The local government of Gujarat has already ordered an investigation into the deadly collapse of the bridge. The bridge is a popular tourist attraction in the area. It was shut for renovation (整修) for seven months and was open for the public on Oct 26, the Gujarati New Year.
Reports said that around 500 people, much beyond its capacity, were on the suspension bridge at the time when it crashed into the river.
Police have arrested nine people including officials of Oreva, the company that carried out the repair work, ticket sellers and security men. However, the owners of the company have not been arrested. Oreva group is actually a Gujarat-based watchmaker company. Reports said that the watchmaker reportedly outsourced (转包) the “technical aspect of the renovation” to a smaller construction company, Devprakash Solutions.
Oreva has been accused of violating multiple safety rules, leading to the huge tragedy just four days after the bridge reopened to the public. Questions have been raised over why Oreva with no experience in construction was given responsibility for maintaining a bridge.

Jim is one of my close friend. Two months ago, his mother buy a computer for him as a birthday present. She hoped Jim will study hard under the help of the computer. To his surprise, Jim just wasted plenty of time play computer games every day. Now she regrets buying the computer. As matter of fact, a computer can do a lot of everyday jobs for us. It is wide used in factories, hospitals, banks and so on. Many computer scientists are now trying to make the computer to “think” like a man. In my opinion, the key is what we should use it wisely.

It was Father’s Day. Having been finished my homework, I together with my sister went to buy some vegetables as well as a gift as planned. We were supposed to giving our father a big surprise. On our way home, we met with Grandpa Li, an old neighbour without children. Suddenly, I came up an idea. Then we went to his home with what we had bought. With his help, we cooked a delicious meal. After that we made a phone call to our parents but told them that we will have lunch at Grandpa Li’s. Hearing what we had done, we were very pleased, saying we were really caring. We helped Grandpa Li do a thorough clean after lunch. Tiredly as we were, we felt we had spent a meaning day. I believe it is a day when will be remembered by me forever in my future life.

7 . Nobel prize-winners, well-known authors, and famous scientists — you might think all these people were born to be creative. However, that’s not always the case.
While well-known figures like Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein did their most significant work in their youth, famous American poet Robert Frost and English-born natural scientist Charles Darwin were known as “late bloomers”— people whose talents were not noticeable until later in life.
This idea of “peaking” at different times inspired new research from the United States. “Many people believe that creativity is exclusively (独有地) associated with youth, but it really depends on what kind of creativity you’re talking about,” said Bruce Weinburg, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the study.
According to the study, published earlier this month in the journal De Economist, there are two types of people: conceptual (概念的) and experimental thinkers.
To reach this conclusion, researchers took the 31 previous winners of the Nobel Prize in economics and arranged them according to when they did their most significant work, to identify their creative peaks.
Some peaked from ages 25-29. Classified as conceptual thinkers, these people think outside of the box, coming up with new ideas before they become used to the conventional way of doing things.
The second creative peak came with economists in their 50s. These are experimental, thinkers who have been in their fields for a long time. This allows them to learn from errors and experiment with different processes, before eventually finding new solutions.
“Whether you hit your creative peak early or late in your career depends on whether you have a conceptual or experimental approach,” said Weinburg. He added that their study isn’t limited to economics, saying it can apply to other creative subjects. So if you’re struggling to come up with new ideas, don’t panic. Your creative peak may be yet to arrive.

9 . At the age of sixteen, I joined a volunteer group with my dad. I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia. On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family” was living in a trailer (拖车) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced.
We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house — something unusual but necessary under these circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen.
On Tuesday of that week, while we ate lunch together, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, “What do you want for your new room?” Expecting toys and other gadgets that children usually ask for, we were surprised when Josh responded, “I just want a bed.”
The boys had never slept in a bed! They were accustomed to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding.
When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning.
That afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds together, Eric ran into the house to watch us. Too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm from the doorway.
As my father slipped a pillowcase (枕套) onto one of the pillows, Eric asked, “What is that?” “A pillow,” he replied. “What do you do with it?” Eric continued to ask. “When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” I answered softly. Tears came to our eyes as he handed Eric the pillow. “Oh... that’s soft,” he said, hugging it tightly.
Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems urgent, my dad gently asks, “Do you have a pillow?” We know exactly what he means.

10 . A diverse crowd of several hundred people queued up in front of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco on Thursday morning for a ceremony that meant more to them than just the issue of a popular postage stamp.
The United States Postal Service’s launch of a special stamp for the Year of the Rabbit has come to symbolize more than just a collectors’ item for many. “We constantly talk about celebrations of our diversity as strengths,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said at thestamp’s launch. “The Lunar New Year represents thousands of years of history. It is the time to promote this (Asian) community in such an extraordinary way.” Breed emphasized that San Francisco is a place where discrimination(歧视)against Asians is unacceptable.
Inspired by decorated masks used in dragon and lion dances, USPS art director Antonio Alcala worked on the beautiful rabbit stamp design with artist Camille Chew.
Jay Xu, director of the Asian Art Museum, said the Lunar New Year celebrations and the stamp launch all reflect the recognition of “our community’s fine integrity(正直)and essentialism” to the United States. “It enables us to tell more stories—our past, our presentand our future,” said Xu, adding that people could strike up a conversation through the collection of artifacts(历史文物)such as stamps. “Stamps can go everywhere and can define friendship between different countries and cultures. This stamp is for all. The Lunar New Year is for all.”
Derek Kan, a member of the USPS board of governors, said, “For more than three decades, USPS has issued stamps highlighting the Lunar New Year, and they are some of the most successful stamp releases in our history.”
Chloe Chan, a second-generation Chinese immigrant, said the rabbit stamp is very “artistic” and worthy of her long wait in line. She has collected every stamp the USPS has issued for the Chinese New Year celebration. Chan is hopeful that her children and grandchildren will observe the Lunar New Year the same way she does, with housecleaning, holiday decorations, rituals(礼仪)and food to honor family roots and the Chinese culture.
The USPS issued its first Chinese New Year stamp for the Year of the Rooster on Dec. 30, 1992.
