3 . Last Tuesday, a robotic ship called the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) took off from Plymouth, England. Its mission (使命) was to recreate the 1620 crossing of the Atlantic by the Mayflower, which brought the first European settlers to the USA. But unlike the original Mayflower, there are no people on the MAS. Everything about the ship is designed to run automatically. The ship is guided by an artificial intelligence (AI) system called "AI Captain".
The MAS is a project run by a group called ProMare along with the computer company, IBM. The ship's electric motor is powered by solar energy. The goal of the project is to test different kinds of technologies for collecting information about the sea. If these can be handled by machines, it could be a big advance in ocean research.
Because the MAS didn't have to carry humans, its designers were free to think about how to make the best ship for the job. In addition to cameras and radar to help the ship guide itself, the ship is carrying many different kinds of tools and sensors. It has special listening devices which can detect whales and dolphins. It even has a special "tongue" which can report back on the chemicals in the water.
Last Friday morning, scientists tracking the ship noticed that it was going about half as fast as it should have been going. The AI Captain was working well, but there seemed to be something slowing the motor down. Since the ship had only covered 10% of the way across the Atlantic, the team decided to bring it back to Plymouth so they could fix the problem and send it out again. They sent the MAS instructions to turn back.
When the MAS finally does put out to sea again, it is expected to take about three weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The fastest speed for the MAS is about 10 mph (16 kph). That may seem slow, but it's about 5 times faster than the original Mayflower, which took 66 days to make the journey.

6 . So you think that by staying at home you are safe from all the terrible kinds of pollution present outdoors? Recent research done at the University of Texas has shown that staying indoors may actually be more harmful to one’s health than being outdoors in smoggy cities.
The research shows that chemicals added to our local water supply to kill harmful bacteria can have unwanted side effects. These chemicals can cause potential harm through drinking and in such seemingly harmless activities as cleaning one’s house. These additives are released from water by daily actions like water running out of taps, spraying from garden hoses, or splashing in dishwashers and washing machines. As the water is agitated (搅动), these chemicals are released into the air and then breathed in. Once inside our bodies, they start to affect our health harmfully.
Does this mean we should stop bathing? No, say the scientists, but we should put all pollution into perspective. Activities at home such as the burning of candles and incense release a lot of things which have been proven as harmful to health as working or living near high density traffic. New rugs, bedding, and even clothing give off that “new smell”, which is a sure sign of chemicals. In the office, newly-applied paint, newly-purchased telephones and other telecommunications equipment, and computers and their peripheral (外部设备) release polluting chemicals, too. As offices and homes often have inadequate ventilation (空气流通), these chemicals can build up to become health trouble. Their toxic effects are only now being slowly recognized.
These facts suggest that, at a minimum, proper airing of newly-purchased goods with an obvious chemical smell is a wise precaution. Home and office windows should be opened during good weather to allow a flushing of stale air. Even one’s car needs to be ventilated as well as the garage.
Until we understand the effects of our new technological environment better, we can only hope that “there is no place like home”.
1. According to the text, why is the local water supply unsafe?A.Because it contains harmful chemicals. |
B.Because it contains poisonous bacteria. |
C.Because the activities of using water are harmful. |
D.Because washing dishes makes the water polluted. |
A.long-lasting | B.poisonous |
C.obvious | D.immediate |
A.Present more detailed information. | B.Summarize the previous paragraphs. |
C.Introduce a new topic for discussion. | D.Give some advice about the problem. |
A.Enclosed environment may have potential health risks. |
B.Staying indoors is actually less risky than going outside. |
C.Home and office windows should be opened at any time. |
D.Any use of electronic devices should be banned to prevent pollution. |
7 . Are the Olympic Games outdated? That might seem like a strange question to ask. But it’s exactly what the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is doing. At the 2012 London Olympics, IOC President Thomas Bach noticed something. “You could see that the younger generation had no interest in the Games anymore. They were not there.”
In response, the IOC wants to make the Summer Olympics more youthful. But that isn’t as simple as just adding more sports. The Olympic program can’t continue to grow bigger: it would become too much for host cities to handle. For now, permanently adding new sports to the Olympics is out of the question.
The IOC’s solution is to continue to vote on the new program’s line-up and give host cities the opinion to add extra sports. The extra events would be included in that year’s Olympics only. This policy takes effect at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing and 3x3 baseball are all making their Olympic debuts(首次露面)there.
Adding new sports, though, has sparked a lot of debate. Some sports have been pushing to be included in the Olympics for years but still haven’t made it. Meanwhile, newer sports like skateboarding or surfing are already getting the opportunity.
People are also wondering what makes up an Olympic sport. Paris, the future host of the 2024 Summer Olympics, has expressed interest in adding break-dancing. Some people would like to see e-sports at the Olympics. E-sports are especially important to consider because they are spreading like wildfire. President Bach stated video games with killing are not acceptable. One of the main principles of the Olympics is to encourage peace. At the moment, the future of e-sports is still uncertain.
What about the Winter Olympics? Not to worry, the IOC has already announced seven new events for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. But the Winter Olympics situation is a little different. The Winter Olympics have less than half the sports of the Summer Olympics, so they have room to grow.
1. Why does the IOC want to make the Summer Olympics more youthful?A.Because the Olympic Games are outdated. |
B.Because there is too much for host cities to handle. |
C.Because the spirit of the Olympics has got lost over time. |
D.Because the IOC wants to get the younger generation interested. |

9 . My old professor’s death sentence came in the summer of 1994. Doctors guessed he had two years left. Morrie knew it was less. But he had made a big decision, one he began to construct the day he came out of the doctor’s office with a sword hanging over his head. He would make death his final project. Since everyone was going to die, he could be of great value, right? He could be researched. Morrie would walk that final bridge between life and death, and record the trip.
The last class of my old professor’s life had only one student. I was the student. The class met on Tuesdays. The subject was “The Meaning of life”. It was taught from experience. No grades were given, but there were oral exams each week. You were expected to respond to questions, and you were expected to raise questions of your own. You were also required to perform physical tasks now and then, such as lifting the professor’s head to a comfortable spot on the pillow or placing his glasses on the bridge of his nose. Kissing him goodbye earned you extra credits. No books were required, yet many topics were covered, including love, work, community, family, aging, forgiveness, and finally, death.
I look back sometimes at the person I was before I rediscovered my old professor. I want to talk to that person. I want to tell him to be more open, to pay attention when your loved ones are speaking, as if it were the last time you might hear them. None of us can undo what we’ve done, or relive a life already recorded. But if Morrie taught me anything at all, it was this: there is no such thing as “too late” in life. He was changing until the day he said goodbye.
1. What can be learned about Morrie from Paragraph 1?A.He was sentenced to death by the court. |
B.He decided to face death positively. |
C.He left the doctor’s office with a sword. |
D.He decided to travel and record the trip. |
A.Many students attended it. |
B.Kissing the teacher was required. |
C.Different aspects of life were involved. |
D.Grades were given after each oral exam. |
A.The person “I” used to be. | B.A loved person. |
C.The professor. | D.A student. |
A.To introduce an unforgettable class. |
B.To encourage people to accept death. |
C.To stress a teacher’s great influence. |
D.To educate readers to treat teachers sincerely. |
10 . Artemis is NASA’s new lunar exploration program. Through the Artemis program, NASA will use new technology to study the Moon in new and better ways, and prepare for human missions to Mars.
NASA’s new rocket will carry the Orion spacecraft to lunar orbit. Then, astronauts will dock (对接) Orion at a small spaceship called the Gateway, from which the crew will take trips to the lunar surface in a new human landing system, and then return to the Gateway. The crew will return to the Earth aboard Orion.
NASA will test the rocket and spacecraft in flight, then send a crew for a test flight:
Artemis 1 will be a test flight of the SLS rocket with the Orion spacecraft with no crew.
Artemis 2 will fly SLS and Orion with a crew past the Moon, then circle it and return to the Earth. This trip will be the farthest any human has gone into space.
Artemis 3 will send a crew with the first woman and the next man to land on the Moon by 2024. The Artemis 3 crew will visit the Moon’s South Pole. No one has ever been there.
At the Moon, astronauts will:
Search for the Moon’s water and use it.
Learn how to live and work on the surface of another celestial body (天体) where astronauts are just three days from home.
Test the technologies we need before sending astronauts on missions to Mars, which can take up-to three years round trip.
The Moon is a good place to learn new science. NASA will learn more about the Moon, the Earth and even the Sun. The Moon is a “test bed” for Mars. The Moon is a place to show that astronauts will one day be able to work away from the Earth on Mars for long periods of time.
1. What is the aim of the Artemis program?A.To help astronauts return to the Earth. | B.To be ready for the landing on Mars. |
C.To study the Mars using new science. | D.To test the Moon landing spacecraft, Orion. |
A.Going to the Moon’s South Pole. | B.Making the farthest trip into space. |
C.Sending the first man to the Moon. | D.Flying to the Moon with three persons. |
A.Send astronauts to Mars. | B.Run a three-year-long test. |
C.Find and make use of water. | D.Learn to live not far from home. |
A.It is possible to live on another planet now. |
B.The crew will reach the lunar surface from the Orion. |
C.NASA has sent the first woman astronaut to the Moon. |
D.The Artemis program is of great help to Mars exploring. |
