3 . Last Tuesday, a robotic ship called the Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) took off from Plymouth, England. Its mission (使命) was to recreate the 1620 crossing of the Atlantic by the Mayflower, which brought the first European settlers to the USA. But unlike the original Mayflower, there are no people on the MAS. Everything about the ship is designed to run automatically. The ship is guided by an artificial intelligence (AI) system called "AI Captain".

The MAS is a project run by a group called ProMare along with the computer company, IBM. The ship's electric motor is powered by solar energy. The goal of the project is to test different kinds of technologies for collecting information about the sea. If these can be handled by machines, it could be a big advance in ocean research.

Because the MAS didn't have to carry humans, its designers were free to think about how to make the best ship for the job. In addition to cameras and radar to help the ship guide itself, the ship is carrying many different kinds of tools and sensors. It has special listening devices which can detect whales and dolphins. It even has a special "tongue" which can report back on the chemicals in the water.

Last Friday morning, scientists tracking the ship noticed that it was going about half as fast as it should have been going. The AI Captain was working well, but there seemed to be something slowing the motor down. Since the ship had only covered 10% of the way across the Atlantic, the team decided to bring it back to Plymouth so they could fix the problem and send it out again. They sent the MAS instructions to turn back.

When the MAS finally does put out to sea again, it is expected to take about three weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The fastest speed for the MAS is about 10 mph (16 kph). That may seem slow, but it's about 5 times faster than the original Mayflower, which took 66 days to make the journey.

1. What is the main mission of the MAS project?
A.Take more Europeans across the Atlantic.
B.Explore the ocean with high technologies.
C.Develop new artificial intelligence system.
D.Test the new robotic ship of IBM on the sea.
2. What happened to the MAS on the sea?
A.There was something wrong with the AI Captain.
B.The scientists failed to guide the ship completely.
C.The ship couldn't reach its destination as planned.
D.The robotic ship's electric motor didn't work well.
3. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.The robotic ship will set sail again soon.
B.The journey will be difficult and dangerous.
C.The entire journey will be about 2, 100 miles.
D.The MAS will travel farther than the original one.
4. What's the best title for the text?
A.A Robotic Ship Guided by the AI Captain System.
B.Self-Driving Mayflower Ship Forced to Turn Back.
C.The Fastest Robotic Ship Sailing Across the Atlantic.
D.Another Mayflower Recreating the Cross-Atlantic Trip.

Many senior high school students have children's books that they no longer need. However, my school organized a book drive, with the purpose donating books to disadvantaged families with young children. The activity lasts for a week and students in my school were encouraging to collect gently used children's books from family members, friends and neighbors. I, along with other volunteers, were responsible for checking the donated books and packing it. In order to perform the task well, I had learned how to packing things from my father in the advance. Though I was tiring at the end of the week, I was happy what I got involved in doing something that could make a difference to the community.

7 . It was in my first year of work as a doctor. My mouth was dry, my palms sweaty and my voice trembling. The only thing that kept me focused was the thought that things were so much worse for the family I was talking to.

A woman in her early twenties had been brought in after a road traffic accident. She had suffered multiple injuries and had been rushed up to theatre. The surgeons had been unable to save her life and she died on the table. Ashen-faced, the consultant (会诊医生) told the woman's family the news. “Tom, I think it would be nice if it came from you,” my consultant said.

I stared blankly. “What?” I asked.

“About organ donation,” he replied. I swallowed hard. Surely this would be the last thing they'd want to talk about. It felt acutely awkward and ill-timed to be considering this kind of conversation while they were being engulfed in grief. But the problem with organ donation is that every minute counts. The clock is ticking because the sooner organs can be transplanted, the better the chance they will survive in the recipient's (接受者) body.

I began to feel sick. I opened the door and sat opposite them, convinced that I was only going to make things worse for them.

“It's what she'd have wanted,” the mother said before I'd even finished. The father nodded. “She was always so generous,” her father added.

As my consultant and I left them, it occurred to me that I'd been wrong in thinking it would be an awkward conversation. Nothing could take away the pain of having lost their daughter. Yet this last, final act had comforted them and helped them feel that the spirit of their daughter lived on m this act of generosity. Strangely, it is one of the most heart-wanning conversations I have ever had.

1. The first two paragraphs suggest________.
A.the woman died on the scene
B.it was hard for the author to face death
C.the author witnessed the traffic accident
D.the woman's death was told by the consultant
2. Why did the author feel sick?
A.He was caught in a dilemma.B.He was seriously ill at that time.
C.He failed to transplant the organ.D.The woman's chance of survival was slim.
3. Why did the couple agree to donate their daughter’s organs?
A.To do the author a favor.B.To show respect for the doctor.
C.To follow then daughter’s will.D.To end the awkward conversation.
4. What made the awkward conversation heart-warming?
A.The consultant’s assistance.B.The author’s consideration.
C.The donor’s kindness.D.The recipient’s appreciation.

10 . So you think that by staying at home you are safe from all the terrible kinds of pollution present outdoors? Recent research done at the University of Texas has shown that staying indoors may actually be more harmful to one’s health than being outdoors in smoggy cities.

The research shows that chemicals added to our local water supply to kill harmful bacteria can have unwanted side effects. These chemicals can cause potential harm through drinking and in such seemingly harmless activities as cleaning one’s house. These additives are released from water by daily actions like water running out of taps, spraying from garden hoses, or splashing in dishwashers and washing machines. As the water is agitated (搅动), these chemicals are released into the air and then breathed in. Once inside our bodies, they start to affect our health harmfully.

Does this mean we should stop bathing? No, say the scientists, but we should put all pollution into perspective. Activities at home such as the burning of candles and incense release a lot of things which have been proven as harmful to health as working or living near high density traffic. New rugs, bedding, and even clothing give off that “new smell”, which is a sure sign of chemicals. In the office, newly-applied paint, newly-purchased telephones and other telecommunications equipment, and computers and their peripheral (外部设备) release polluting chemicals, too. As offices and homes often have inadequate ventilation (空气流通), these chemicals can build up to become health trouble. Their toxic effects are only now being slowly recognized.

These facts suggest that, at a minimum, proper airing of newly-purchased goods with an obvious chemical smell is a wise precaution. Home and office windows should be opened during good weather to allow a flushing of stale air. Even one’s car needs to be ventilated as well as the garage.

Until we understand the effects of our new technological environment better, we can only hope that “there is no place like home”.

1. According to the text, why is the local water supply unsafe?
A.Because it contains harmful chemicals.
B.Because it contains poisonous bacteria.
C.Because the activities of using water are harmful.
D.Because washing dishes makes the water polluted.
2. The underlined word “toxic” in Paragraph 3 is closest to “________” in meaning.
A.long-lastingB.poisonous
C.obviousD.immediate
3. What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 4?
A.Present more detailed information.B.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
C.Introduce a new topic for discussion.D.Give some advice about the problem.
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.Enclosed environment may have potential health risks.
B.Staying indoors is actually less risky than going outside.
C.Home and office windows should be opened at any time.
D.Any use of electronic devices should be banned to prevent pollution.
