2 . Researchers say two-way communication is possible with people who are asleep and dreaming. Specifically, with people who are lucid (清醒的) dreaming — that is, dreaming while being aware you’re dreaming.
In separate experiments, scientists in the U.S., France, Germany and the Netherlands asked people simple questions while they slept. Sleepers would respond by moving their eyes or faces in a certain way to indicate their answers.
“Since the1980s, we’ve known that lucid dreamers can communicate out of dreams by using these signals,” says Karen Konkoly, a Ph.D. student at Northwestern University, who is the first author on the study published this month in Current Biology. “But we were wondering, can we also communicate in? Can we ask people questions that they could actually hear in their dreams so that we could kind of have a more meaningful conversation?”
Lucid dreaming is not common. So to study it, they found people who had experience with it and also trained people to try to make lucid dreaming more likely. Before they went to sleep, the participants were also trained on how to communicate their answers. Special sensors measured people’s eye movements or experts would judge their facial movements. For example, a typical question would be to ask what is 8 minus 6. A 19-year-old American man was able to respond by moving his eyes left-right, left-right-two times-to signal “2”.
Out of the 158 trials among 36 participants, about 18% of the time they were able to give correct answers. In another 18%, it wasn’t clear if participants were responding or not. They were wrong 3% of the time. Most often, 61%, participants didn’t respond at all.
The researchers write that their findings present “new opportunities for gaining real-time information about dreaming” and “could begin a new era of investigations into multiple dimensions of sleep”.
Konkoly says there’s the possibility of one day doing a sort of “dream therapy (疗法)” for talking down people experiencing lucid nightmares.

5 . The world has spent a long time living with the pandemic. But many people have become lazy about protecting their safety. Are you spending time indoors and unmasked with trusted friends? Or eating in restaurants or making more trips to the grocery store? New types of COVID-19 mean you should try to cut back on exposure. And where you can, double down on basic safety.
Wear masks
The N95 mask is the gold standard. It may cost too much or be hard to find. A cloth mask does a good job of filtering particles that cause infection.
If you go to the store two or three times a week, cut back to once a week. If you have been spending 30 to 45 minutes in the grocery store, cut down your time in the store.
Spend less time indoors with people who are not from your household. If you must spend time with others, wear your best mask. Be sure any space is well ventilated (通风)(open windows and doors). Keep the visit as short as possible.

6 . Everybody, at some point in their lives, has experienced failure. It could be something as simple as not getting the job you wanted, or getting fewer marks even after hard work. But what makes you is not your failure, but how you get back up after being bit.
Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life.
But the brave boy did not want to die nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, and then run to school, to run for the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.
In February 1934, in New York City's Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, who could never hope to run—this determined young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.
A good example of the power of positive thinking and faith in one's self, Glenn Cunningham continues to be an inspiration for many, and his story, a brilliant evidence to how one can bounce back even when all difficulties are piled against one, to the degree that death seemed the preferable option.

9 . Verkhoyansk, a town in northeastern Siberia, about 6 miles within the Arctic Circle, recorded a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) on June 20. 2020, likely setting a new record for the hottest temperature recorded that far north.
The new record comes as Siberia—and the Asian continent as a whole—have experienced unusually warm conditions since the start of this year. The whole region has been off-the-charts warm lately. And while it’s difficult to know the impact of climate change on individual records or temperatures in any given season, experts say the developments are part of a broader warming trend that has been documented across the globe.
The sudden movement of heat is being caused by high-pressure ridge (脊)of air—sometimes called “heat dome (穹)” that is blanketing the area. When this happens, air gets squeezed into one location and sinks, pushing warm temperatures down to the surface.
The high-pressure ridge also prevents clouds from forming, so sunshine comes through without being weakened by clouds. North of the Arctic Circle when that temperature was observed, they had 24 hours of daylight, so they were receiving solar energy for those entire 24 hours.
The town of Verkhoyansk is known for having the biggest extremes between winter and summer than any other city in the world, with their average high temperature minus 47 degrees Fahrenheit in winter In June and July, their average temperature is close to 70 degrees. In their climate history, they’ve been above 90 degrees over 150 times, and above 95 degrees at least dozen times.
“Since the start of the year, we’ve been noticing that Asia— particularly northern Asia, like Russia—has been extremely warm,” —said Ahira Sanchez-Lugo, a climatologist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Forecasts suggest that this part of Siberia could see at least another week of above-average temperatures before things stabilize. But conditions in Asia have been warmer than usual for most of 2020.

10 . There you are, looking through your WeChat moments or your Weibo feed, and you come across a post like this: “I just got accepted to Harvard AND Oxford! Are they sure they didn’t mix my applications with somebody else?!”
This person is clearly humblebragging. The tem “humblebrag” was first coined back in 2010 by the late US comedian Harris Wittels, and it describes when someone makes a seemingly modest statement, but the actual purpose is to bring attention to something they are proud of.
The example above is a humility-based humblebrag. The person wants to tell others: “I got accepted to Harvard and Oxford!” However, they don’t want to seem too arrogant. So instead, they word it in a way to be more modest and bring down the importance of their achievements.
Although people who humblebrag think it will make them more likeable because they aren’t loudly boasting about their triumphs, a study showed that humblebragging actually has the opposite effect.
“Humblebragging backfires because it seems very fake. That ‘woe(悲伤)is me’ attitude combined with self-promotion does not lead to a favorable impression,” said Ovul Sezer. “Even simply bragging or complaining is better, because at least those messages are seen more sincere.”
Sezer’s study also found that nearly 60 percent of humblebrags were complaint-based humblebragging, with most people humblebragging about their looks, followed by their money or wealth, and finally about their performance at work.
“It’s such a common phenomenon. We all know some people, whether in social media or in the work place, who do this annoying thing,” commented Sezer, adding that we all do it to some extent.
So, if you want to share your achievements with others. what’s the best way to do it then?
Sezer suggests that people “admit their self-promotion and harvest the rewards of being sincere”. She also suggested finding a wingman: “If someone brags for you, that’s the best thing, because then you don’t seem like you’re bragging.”
1. Which of the following can be regarded as humblebragging?A.Bringing people’s attention to your achievements. |
