文章大意:这是一篇说明文,主要讲述了懒惰并不总是看起来那样,有时候看似懒惰的人可能在思考、休息或者计划他们的下一项工作。

5 . Have you ever heard people say that laziness is the mother of poverty? Laziness is a sin (罪), everyone knows that. We have probably all had lectures pointing out that laziness is immoral, that it is wasteful, and that lazy people will never amount to anything in life. But is it often the case?

In fact, laziness is often caused by more complex reasons than simple wish to avoid work. Some people who appear to be lazy are suffering from much more serious problems. They may be so distrustful of their fellow workers that they are unable to join in any group task for fear of ridicule (嘲笑) or having their idea stolen. These people who seem lazy may be paralyzed by a fear of failure that prevents fruitful work. Or other sorts of fantasies may prevent work; some people are so busy planning, sometimes planning great deals or fantastic achievements that they are unable to deal with whatever “lesser” work is on hand. Still other people are not avoiding work; strictly speaking, they are merely procrastinating — rescheduling their day.

Laziness can actually be helpful. Like procrastinators (拖延者), some people may look lazy when they are really thinking, planning, contemplating (沉思), researching. We should all remember that great scientific discoveries occurred by chance. Sitting “lazily” under the tree, Newton wasn’t working in the orchard (果园) when the apple hit him and he devised the theory of gravity. All of us would like to have someone “lazy” build the car, particularly if that “laziness” was caused by the worker’s taking time to check each step of his work and to do his job right. And sometimes, being “lazy” — that is, taking time off for a rest — is good for the overworked students or executives. Taking a rest can be particularly helpful to the “lazy” athlete who is trying too hard or the “lazy” doctor who’s simply working himself overtime too many evenings at the clinic. So be careful when you’re tempted to call someone lazy. That person may be thinking, resting, or planning his or her next work. See for yourself!

1. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The impacts of being lazy on work.
B.The reasons for some people being lazy.
C.The work model of lazy people.
D.The approaches to avoiding laziness.
2. What does the author probably agree with?
A.Laziness is a serious physical disease.
B.Laziness is more beneficial than harmful.
C.Some people appear lazy because they feel insecure.
D.Some people avoid serious work for lack of patience.
3. What is the author’s tone of writing the last paragraph?
A.Humorous.B.Pessimistic.C.Doubtful.D.Indifferent.
4. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce how to avoid being lazy.
B.To compare different attitudes to lazy people.
C.To remind the reader laziness is not always what it appears to be.
D.To encourage the reader to become independent individuals.

9 . When it comes to travel, sometimes wandering is one of the most exciting things you can do. In a time when travellers are both more adventurous and eco-conscious than ever, it’s no surprise that there’s a wealth of new vocabulary to describe how we travel, when we travel and how the experience makes us feel. Here are eight of our favourite travel words that you may not have heard before.

We’ve kicked off a blog with the staycation, “a holiday in one’s own country”. The term first became popular in the mid-2000s, when the global financial crisis meant people had less income to spend on flash holidays and instead searched for cheaper local choices. Since 2020, the staycation is experiencing a revival (复兴). Benefits of staycations include cheaper travel costs, no spending hours in the airport and, of course, no need to worry about whether your passport expired (过期) last year.

Once upon a time, if you wanted to meet new people on your travels, you could stay at a hostel or with a host on Airbnb. Now, you can couch surf. And not just in “the staying at various friends’ houses until you find a new place to rent” sense: couch surfing is quickly becoming a hot new travel trend. Travellers can now choose to couch surf all across the world via a website which treats travel as a cultural exchange, allowing people to connect with willing hosts and crash on their sofas.

Given that single-use and climate strike were selected as the Collins 2018 and 2019 Words of the Year respectively, it’s clear that the climate crisis is very much on everybody’s mind. This desire to make more sustainable choices is also affecting the way we spend our vacation days. Ecotourism is another popular travel trend, defined as tourism that is designed to contribute to the protection of the environment. Examples of ecotourism include ditching short-haul flights, staying at eco-friendly resorts, or booking a staycation.

1. When did the staycation become popular firstly?
A.About in 2018.B.About in 2019.C.About in 2005.D.About in 2010.
2. How many new travel words are mentioned in the text?
A.Two.B.Three.C.Four.D.Six.
3. What does the text mainly focus on?
A.The eco-friendly travel ways.B.The cheap ways to get around.
C.The changing words of travel.D.The spread of history and culture.
4. What is probably continued with the text?
A.The other new travel words.B.Ways to protect environment.
C.Other examples of ecotourism.D.Experiences of reaching culture.

10 . The problem with a catchy name is that sometimes it catches on too well. Take the hygiene hypothesis (卫生说) outlined in 1989 by David Strachan of St George’s, a hospital and medical school in London. It suggests that the rise of allergenic (致敏的) sensitivity observed in rich countries over the course of the 20th century may have been caused by a shift from rural to urban living, so that children are no longer routinely exposed to farm animals.

Dr Strachan’s work still has much to recommend it. What the catchy label has encouraged, however, is a false belief that cleanliness is not necessarily a health benefit. In reality, says Thomas Marrs, an allergist at King’s College, London, hygiene is usually about bacteria (细菌) causing infection—and the bacteria that may be beneficial are different from those which do that. But it is plain to see why alternative descriptions, such as “the high turnover and diversity hypothesis” or the “the microbial deprivation hypothesis (微生物剥夺假说)”, have not caught on, more accurate though they may be.

In an attempt to collect further data on the matter, Hisao Okabe of Fukushima Medical University and his team have looked through the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, which tracked over 100,000 births between 2019 and 2022.

Pursuing the animal connection, they looked for correlations between household pet ownership before and immediately after a child’s birth, and any food allergies found in that child’s first three years.

Of the 66,000 or so children they chose to look at, 22% had been born into households with pets. Children in households with dogs, the researchers found, had lower rates than average of allergies to eggs, milk and nuts. Those cohabiting with cats seemed more tolerant of eggs, wheat and beans. However, children whose parents kept turtles (龟) appeared unaffected. And, curiously, those exposed to hamsters (仓鼠) appeared more likely than average to be allergic to nuts.

Confirming or denying this will need more study. Nevertheless, Dr Okabe’s contribution is an interesting addition to the debate about Dr Strachan’s brainchild.

1. What does the hygiene hypothesis suggest?
A.Children in rich countries are more likely to have allergies.
B.Urban living leads to less exposure to allergens.
C.Allergies are linked to bacteria that cause infection.
D.Farm animals reduce childhood allergies.
2. What is the author’s attitude to the microbial deprivation hypothesis?
A.DoubtfulB.FavorableC.CriticalD.indifferent
3. Okabe’s research aimed to find out the relationship between ________.
A.pet ownership and uncomfortable childbirthB.pet ownership and child food allergies
C.environments and animalsD.food and allergies
4. Which animals help fight allergies?
A.Dogs and catsB.Dogs and turtlesC.Cats and hamstersD.Turtles and hamsters.
