2 . Last September, British artist Sacha Jafri set the record for creating the world's largest painting. Last week, the painting was sold for $62 million, which will go to charity.

Last year, as the COVID-19 spread and many countries went into lockdown, Mr. Jafri was in Dubai. Rather than feeling stuck, Mr. Jafri decided to take on a huge project that could“make a really big difference”.

He decided to create the world's largest painting. And he wanted to do it in a way that would include people from around the world. He asked children to send him pictures showing how they were feeling during the pandemic(疫情). He got artwork from kids in 140 different countries.

Using the children's ideas as a starting point, Mr. Jafri began to paint in a huge dancing room in a fancy hotel. It took Mr. Jafri seven months to create the painting. But when the auction(拍卖) ended on March 22, Mr. Jafri did much better than that. A French businessman bought all the pieces. 5 . Every day thousands of people travel across the world for different reasons. Whenever I've checked in for a flight, I've seen many travellers saying “I missed it” or “I forgot it”, etc. This happens because while packing our bags, we miss so many important things.

The baggage packing isn't a big job but many people see it as a messy job. I'll advise you to always pack your bags according to your trip. The baggage should be different according to the duration(持续时间)of your trip. You shouldn't carry unnecessary things or more than what you need.

If you're going on a business trip of not more than 2- 3 days, then make sure you don't carry more than a single bag. Pack 2—3 business suits, a night suit and also some casual(非正式的)clothes. You'll need casual clothes because you might get a chance to explore the place.

While on holidays of 5—6 days, you have to be very smart while packing your bag. First of all, check the climate of the place. If it's summer, then carry lightweight clothes and if it's winter, then you have to pack a sweater. For holidays, pack all the small things you'll be requiring. But don't carry too many things.

If you're going to a relative's place, then you can be a bit relaxed because if you miss something, you won't have to worry as your relative will be there to help you. But don't forget to buy gifts for your relatives. If the gifts are fragile, then pack them in a hard box and always keep them in between clothes. 7 . What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed at the entrance? Or the soft background music?

But have you ever noticed the smell? Unless it is bad,the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop’s scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to be an increasing powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.

A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and out to the entrance via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers’ intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.

When it comes to the best shopping streets in Pairs, scent is just as important to a brand’s success as the quality of its window displays and goods on sales. That is mainly because shopping is a very different experience to what it used to be.

Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants’ disproving attitude and don’t-touch-what-you-can’t-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores can offer a full experience from the minute customers step through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.

Now a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder floats through the kid department, and coconut scent in the swimsuit section. A department store has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store’s windows to smell books, pots and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

1. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.argue and discussB.examine and assess
C.inform and explainD.compare and evaluate
2. According to the passage, what is an increasingly powerful tool in the success of some brand store?
A.Friendly assistant.B.Unique scents.

3. E-shops are mentioned in the passage to ________.
A.introduce the rise of e-commerceB.push stores to use sights and sounds
C.urge shop assistants to change their attitudeD.show the advantages of brick-and-mortar stores
4. The underlined word “destination” in Paragraph 5 means ________.
A.a platform that exhibits goodsB.a spot where travelers like to stay

It’s a limitation you put on your mind.” And 50-year-old Indian Lakyntiew Syiemlieh stands an evidence for this saying. She recently cleared her Class 12 board exams. Lakyntiew, who has four children and two grandchildren, decided to go after her higher secondary education over three decades after dropping out of school. Earlier this year, she was one of the 24,267 students who appeared for the state board’s Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) exam. She stopped going to school because mathematics was too difficult for her to understand. She was offered a job to teach in a preschool in 2008, and that was the beginning of her love for re-learning.

9 . As a rider, Anna Kiesenhofe’s Olympics victory might be a surprise. The winner of the road race at the Tokyo Olympics left the sport at the end of 2017 when she found herself out of contract (合同). She came into Tokyo without a professional team and left as an Olympic champion.

The 30-year old began her cycling career in 2014 after running injuries that prevented her from continuing her pursuits of triathlon (铁人三项). She later joined a Catalan team and won the Spanish National Cup in 2016.

The then-26 year old signed her first professional contract with Lotto Soudal Ladies for the following season. However, she ended her 2017 campaign in April and did not sign a contract for 2018, eventually taking a year off the bike. In 2019, Kiesenhofer came back to the sport as a rider, winning the Austrian national road race. Despite her results, Kiesenhofer sill had no professional contract while going into the Tokyo Olympics.

Kiesenhofer was the first rider to attack in the Olympic road race, eventually forming a breakaway along with Carl Oberholzer, Omer Shapira, Vera Looser and Anna Plichta, which went on to reach a gap of 11 minutes. After Looser and Oberholzer were dropped, Kiesnhofer ataced her two remaining breakaway companions.

After Shapira and Plichta were caught by the peloton (主车群), the rest of the riders seemed to believe that they were racing among themselves for Gold, not knowing that Remehofere was still in front. While it might be a misjudgment from the rest of the peloton that allowed Kiesenhofer to keep her lead of more than two minutes, other riders’ mistakes should not detract from the Austrian’s efforts.

Off the bike, the new Olympic Champion has a PhD in mathematics after studying at the Technical University of Vienne as well as at Cambridge University. She currently works at the University of Lausanne.

1. Why did Anna give up triathlon?
A.She got injured.B.She lost interest in it.

10 . Toni Morrison was an American writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels, Beloved, Song of Solomon and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed (受困扰的) with skin colour. Morrison was nearly 40 when she published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as “language itself, a language she wants to liberate from race”.
