1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Everyone likes the beautiful Cinderella, but I like the ugly stepsister. The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck for a look at the holiday window display, but at the age of six I was too small to see around the grown-ups with their winter coats and packages. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes widened. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Cinderella.” Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit made of shining red silk. I knew if I lifted her skirt I would find her crystal(水晶) shoes. The tiny tiara (冠状头饰) fastened to her silky golden hair shone.

“If only she were mine,” I dreamed. “We’d have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Madge,” she said. “I promise.” Later that week I leaned against Mother’s sewing machine, watching the needle flash up and down. “Bet you don’t know what this is!” she joked, holding up the cloth for me to see. “My Christmas doll!” I yelled. It was still in the early stages but I could make out the head, neck and body. “So much to my surprise!” Mother laughed as I danced around the room, already pretending Cinderella and I were at the ball. It wouldn’t be long now.

My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile she was pleased with her progress. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When the boys and girls got on the bus early in the morning, they noticed Vingo, who sat in front of them, staring at a photo, completely in silence. At noon, the bus pulled into Howard Johnsonˈs, a service area, and everybody got off the bus except Vingo. The youngsters began to wonder about him. When they came back, one of the girls sat beside him and introduced herself.

"Want some drink?" she asked.

Vingo smiled and thanked her and became silent again.

Late in the afternoon, they stopped at another Howard Johnsonˈs, and this time Vingo went out. The girl insisted that he join them. He followed them to a restaurant and ordered a cup of black coffee and some cookies. When they returned, the girl sat with Vingo again. After a while, slowly and painfully, he began his story and told her that he had been in prison for the past four years, and now he was going home.

"Are you married?" asked the girl.

"I donˈt know," he said softly.

"You donˈt know?"

"Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife," he said, "I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldnˈt stand it, if the kids kept asking questions, and if it hurt her too much, she could just forget me. Iˈd understand. I told her she didnˈt have to write to me. And she didnˈt. Not for three and a half years."

"And youˈre going home now, not knowing?"

"Yeah. Well, last week, I wrote to her again. We used to live in Brunswick and thereˈs a big oak (橡树) tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she didnˈt have a new man and if sheˈd take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief on the tree and Iˈd get off and come home. If she didnˈt want me, forget it--no handkerchief and Iˈd go on through."

"Wow," the girl burst out, "Wow!"

She told the other youngsters, and soon all of them were in it.

Daisy, together with her father, mother and elder brother, happily lived in a beautiful village surrounded with beautiful nature. Stepping outside the house, they saw flowers smiling in the sunshine and butterflies dancing in the garden. The family survived on growing seasonal plants.

While they lived a very happy life, Daisy did not love the wonderful atmosphere of the village. She really wanted to move to the city and enjoy the urban life. She had a fantasy to go shopping, try on fashionable dresses, watch movies, and eat in fancy restaurants and cafes.

However, there was hardly any chance that Daisy’s family would move to the city as they had everything in the village. One day, Daisy felt asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep. Of course, she had a strange dream. She saw her deceased (已故的) grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her grandmother granted (同意给予) her a wish. Daisy requested her that she would love to enjoy the city life as she always desired.

Grandmother understood the desire of Daisy, but still wanted to convince her that peaceful village life was better than city life. She told Daisy, “Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air. You cannot play with animals. You will not find peace as you see here! Do you still want to go to the city?”

Daisy, without hearing the concerns, asked her grandmother to grant the wish. The grandmother granted her the wish but with a condition. Daisy was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city. Later, she would return to village. Daisy agreed.

The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and wet, and the street lamps gave little light. Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.

When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued, and Frank began walking more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this. The short, quick steps grew louder until they seemed very near.

Frank found it impossible not to turn round. As he did so, he caught sight of a human from coming toward him. After reaching the other side of the bridge, Frank stopped and pretended to look down at the water. From the corner of his eyes he could now make out the form of a man dressed in a large overcoat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen.

As the man came near, Frank turned towards him and said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.

Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour. He knew that the person who lived there was very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, Frank began following the stranger quietly.

The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop onto the ground at the other side.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

At noon that day, I drove back to my house after the performance. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs—it was the sound of my favorite violin.

“Thief!”

I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.

Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile, I asked, “Are you Mr. Ram’s nephew, Michael? I’m his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You’re really like him!”

On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, “Has my uncle gone out? I think I’d better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a while.”

I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, “Do you like to play the violin so much?”

“Yes, but I’m so poor that I can’t afford it,” the boy replied.

“Then, I give this violin to you.” The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.

I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper’s photo.

There was once a beautiful town in which there were a couple of lovers who would often stay together on the top of the mountain enjoying the sunrise and by the sea appreciating the sunset. Everyone who knew them could not help envying them and praying for their happy love.

But one day, the man was severely injured and lying in bed in hospital for several days without any consciousness. The woman guarded him by the bed in daytime, calling his name constantly while at night, she would go to the church and pray to God until her tears ran up.

A week passed by and the man was still sleeping. The woman was exhausted, but she persisted. One day, the God was finally moved by her love and persistence and would like to do her a special favor.

God asked her, “Do you really want to exchange your lover’s life with yours? The woman answered without the least hesitation,” “Yes” God said, “All right. I can help your lover recover quickly on the condition that you should promise to be a butterfly for three years. Do you agree with the deal?” She said excitedly and firmly, “Yes, I do!”

The next day, the woman became a beautiful butterfly and said goodbye to God, flying hurriedly to the hospital. It turned out that the man came to his consciousness and woke up, talking with a doctor. She could not hear what they were talking about because she could not fly into the house. What she could do was watch her beloved through the windows helplessly.

After several days, the man entirely recovered and went out of hospital. However, he was unhappy and asking every passer-by for the woman’s information, but no one knew where the woman went. The man searched her persistently without eating and resting. So much did he miss her that he was eager to see her immediately. Never did he know that the woman had turned into a butterfly that was flying around him all the time. She could not speak to or hug him. She could only bear the suffering that he did not realize her existence.

The cost of a smile

Kathy was a young woman in her 20’s who worked in a small restaurant as a waitress. One day, as she went about her shift with her usual angry look, a kind old man walked in and sat down at the counter. He read the menu and politely told her what he wanted.

Kathy took his order and yelled, “Your food will be ready soon.” As she turned to leave, the man said, “A smile costs nothing”. Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away.

She brought his order, cleared his plates, and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip.

Each time the old man saw her, he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier.

A week went by, and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say, “A smile costs nothing.”

But a week later, Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words “1 SMILE … $20" at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see.

He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added, “… and a smile, if you don’t mind”. Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud, “Now, now …” The man jokingly scolded. “I ordered a smile, not a laugh”. So Kathy put on a bright smile and said, “Coming right up, sir.” And to her surprise, he left $20 tip!

A few years went by, and the two bonded like family. Charlie, the kind old man, was a retired manager whose wife passed away long ago. He spent most of his time at home, with the exception of his frequent restaurant visits. Every day Kathy spent her break talking to him.

“Once there was a ship travelling on the tough sea and on the ship there was a pair of couple. All of a sudden, the ship met with an accident and the couple had no choice but to run to the life boat without delay. After reaching there, they realized that there was space only for one person. At that very moment, the husband pushed his wife behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself, leaving his wife standing on the sinking ship, shouting something desperately to her husband eyes filled with tears.”

The teacher stopped her story-telling and asked her students, “Guys, guess what it was that she shouted.”

Most students answered. “I hate you!”

After listening to all this reply, the teacher glanced through the whole class again and noticed that there was a boy sitting silently throughout. Then she asked him the same question.

The boy answered, “I believe she would have shouted-Take care of our child.”

Listening to his remarks, the teacher was surprised and asked the boy doubtfully. “Have you heard of this story before?”

Shaking his head, the boy said softly and sadly, “No, I haven’t. But that’s what my mother said to my father before she died of a deadly disease.”

Moved and feeling sad, the teacher replied. “Your answer is absolutely right!”

Then she continued, “Let’s take up the story. The ship sank eventually and the husband went home and brought up their daughter alone. Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter was tidying up all his belongings when she found his diary. 10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was born and grew up in a small seaside town. In my childhood, I often played on the beach with my elder sister, chasing (追逐) the waves and enjoying the seaside scenery.

One sunny summer afternoon, my sister and I were playing on a big rock quite a distance from the beach. We were so happy that we didn’t notice the water rising. When we decided to go back, we were shocked to find that the rock had almost been covered by water and there was no way back to the shore. Meanwhile, the wind blew harder and harder. We got into a panic, waving and shouting crazily towards the shore. Suddenly, I slipped (滑) and fell into the sea. My sister stretched out her hand to catch hold of me. However, she could not stay still, and slid off the rock into the sea, too.

“Help! Help!” We cried. I could feel my body tingling (酸麻) as I tried to breathe for air. I attempted to swim back to the rock, but the water was too deep and the waves were too strong. What made things worse was that the rough water made it almost impossible for anyone to hear our cries. Tears mixed with the water as I struggled in the sea. My sister, although using all her strength, wasn’t able to pull me in. Instead, she was being pushed apart from me by the big waves. The two of us, scared to death, kept crying.

Luckily, two boys playing on the beach happened to see us. They quickly found a stick nearby and approached us cautiously, hand in hand. They tried to pull us ashore with the stick. But the stick was too short for us to reach. Worse still, the wind was getting so strong that the two boys were rocked from side to side, unable to stand steadily. Eventually, they had no choice but to go back to the shore to look for other people to help us.
