On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.

As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they’d seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concerns.

The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn’t help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.

Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours, ” said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.

Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.

He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest." Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.

She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children stared to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.

I did not know what to say. My motherly nature was to say an immediate yes to see a smile on my son’s face, But I should not spoil this nice kid. So, I said to him, “Paul, I need to talk to Dad. Can I tell you tomorrow morning?”

“Thanks. Mom.”

After talking with my husband, we agreed to let him go but make him earn the money.

“Paul, Dad and I thought about your trip. Yes, in principle it’s okay for us. But you have to earn it. You said that you have more than a month to pay the money.”   

“Thanks a lot, Mom. I shall surely save the money well before the due date.”

One morning in March when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper, “Good dog.” Sally didn’t take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose.

Now, five-year-old Sally stood nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella, my trained dog, sitting calmly by her side. All the eyes of her classmates were focused on Sally. They were waiting for her to speak. It was June-only one week of school left-but they had never heard her voice. Not once.

My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name.

On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received.

I overheard him ask how much a cup of coffee was, counted the few dollars he had in his pocket, and a little reluctantly ordered coffee so he could stay inside.

As I heard all of this, and thinking of the cash I had just received but didn't need, I felt this might be someone I could help. So I engaged the man in some conversation, because I know most people who are homeless don't get the benefit of casual conversation very often. I learned he was aged 45 and had previously worked as a tree trimmer (修剪工)off the books. Unfortunately about a year ago he fell while working and badly hurt his back and was no longer able to work until he got his back medically addressed. After about 10-15 minutes of conversation I told him that if he felt comfortable accepting my offer, I would buy him whatever food off the menu he wanted. He resisted because he didn't want to trouble me, I insisted he accept my offer because everyone deserves a warm meal. He eventually accepted and ordered something simple.

At noon on a brilliant Tuesday in March, my 12-year-old son Kai and I are a mile and a half into a four-day, 27-mile walk through the Grand Canyon—his first backpacking trip — when he asks: “Are we almost to camp?”

Um, no. Camp, at Hermit Creek, is seven miles and nearly 2,500 feet below, which will take us several more hours. We’re going down a poorly maintained path off the canyon, across which we can see many of the canyon’s layers. This is on display in cliffs hundreds of feet tall, a reminder of how far we have to go.

We are here largely because of a birthday note Kai wrote me two years ago in which he declared, “You used to be a wild 10-year-old like me and now you’re a wild 53-year-old. We can do so many things together! I am excited for when I’m old enough for the Grand Canyon!”

There are, I suppose, dads who could resist that, just as there are fathers who would plan an experience-appropriate trip for their sons. I am neither, so here we are. Never mind that; aside from simply being 12, Kai has done almost nothing to physically prepare for this. Or that I haven’t backpacked for 13 years.

We head on past twisty trees and brush. Soon the view broadens, and the layers grow deeper, down to the shadowy, 1.8 billion-year-old Vishnu, a panorama(全景) that leaves Kai excited. “This place is amazing,” he says.

Nightfall in the canyon can be magical. Darkness surrounds us, pressed by cool air. We navigate a narrow path to the stream and, hearing the sound of a waterfall, lie down to take in the stars. Twice I suggest we turn in. “Not yet,” Kai says. “This is too unbelievable.”

“It says in the paper that his name is Alan Rook,” said Martin. “And he works in a bank in London. But on Monday morning -- no Alan Rook! The people at the bank don’t know where he is. And they say he’s got a hundred thousand pounds with him.The police are looking for him, too.”

Although I could hide my lack of wealth at school by wearing our school uniforms, my poverty was embarrassingly apparent on weekends with my classmates wearing designer jeans and I had no choice but to wear my sisters’ old jeans. I never fitted in with my classmates. To my relief, there was only one girl named Julie who opened her heart to me. I was attached to her like a shadow. Soon, her birthday was approaching. Julie invited me to attend her birthday party.
