1 . A BUTTERFLY-SHAPED island in the central Aegean hopes to become Greece's first carbon-free tourist destination. Under a deal with the government, Volkswagen, a carmaker, has donated several new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea's public services; it will sell others at cost price lo its 1,200 residents. In return, the government has offered some money for islanders to buy electric cars and will build a hybrid solar and wind-fueled power plant to replace a group of polluting diesel-fired generators (柴油发电机).

Unlike other nearby islands, Astypalea is not connected to Greece's electricity grid. With only 3,000 rooms for visitors in small hotels or flats, tourism is still low-key. Many residents make a living in the old-fashioned ways: raising goats, keeping bees and fishing. The island was selected for Volkswagen's e-mobility experiment after Nikos Komineas, the go-ahead mayor, contacted the transport ministry for help in finding an electric bus to try out on its rugged roads.

Most islanders sound keen on the project. Mr Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to fall by a third over the next five years. Its residents, he says, will get around on e-scooters and electric minibuses, which will be free, linked to a mobile-phone app and available all day.

Some observers find the plan a little impractical. A plan for a solar park that would generate half the island's electricity within three years will not get under way before the tourist season ends. A single wind turbine (涡轮机) will be installed only in 2026, assuming the licensing process goes smoothly. That is not normally the case in the Aegean, where islanders worry that tourists will go elsewhere if the view is spoiled by a turbine 200 meters high. And even then, the hybrid power unit is planned to cover only about 80%of summer demand. But it is a start.

1. Why did Volkswagen donate some new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea's public services?
A.The carmaker wanted to promote its sales volume in this butterfly-shaped island.
B.The government would pay for the vehicles to reduce the pollution caused by transport.
C.It was part of the plan to make the island the first carbon-free tourist destination in Greece.
D.The islanders wanted to replace some polluting diesel-fired generators.
2. According to the text, which of the following statements is WRONG?
A.Many residents in the island still lead a traditional life.
B.The tourism in the island is its main source of economic benefit.
C.The island can only provide about 3, 000 rooms for visitors.
D.The island was chosen to perform the e-mobility experiment.
3. What's the author's attitude towards the plan?
A.Cautious.B.Pessimistic.C.Positive.D.Indifferent.
4. What's the main idea of the text?
A.An island in Greece wants to boost tourism without using electricity.
B.Greece aims to become the first carbon-free country in the world.
C.A carmaker—Volkswagen donates electric cars to an island to boost the local tourism.
D.An island plans to be the first carbon-free tourist destination in its country.

2 . An elderly man from a remote village deep in mountains became well-known nationwide for building a canal to bring water to local residents. The man, 85-year-old Huang Dafa, has lived his entire life in Caowangba village in Zunyi, Guizhou province.

For 36 years, he dedicated himself to one thing—leading villagers to create and then maintain a 9.4-kilometer-long “life canal" to bring fresh water to the village. With the irrigation channel in place, people in Caowangba finally had sufficient drinking water and could irrigate rice and other crops, boosting their incomes and improving their quality of life. The channel is named the “Dafa Canal” in Huang's honor.

Huang has been dubbed the modern “Yu Gong”, a figure in China's folklore. Like Yu Gong, his persistence also made the impossible possible. In 1959, Huang became a leader in the village. “I decided to do three things for the villagers: bring water to the village, build a road and provide access to electricity,” Huang said, recalling his early days. He found that a village near Caowangba had water to spare, but the problem was that a mountain lay between them. Nevertheless, he took on the task.

Things did not go well at first. After more than 10 years, water remained a pipe dream. Although some people said that Caowangba would never get access to water, Huang never lost hope. At the age of 53, he started to study water conservancy technology on his own. After three years, with his newfound knowledge and persistence, he raised money from the local government and had 200 people dig the canal. Their work paid off in 1995 when water finally rushed into Caowangba. The same year, the village gained access to electricity, and a new road was built. All three projects were overseen by Huang.

Huang's efforts won him the titles of “National Model Worker” and “Model of the Times” in 202l.

1. Why did Huang Dafa become well-known nationwide?
A.Because he worked until 85-year-old and has lived his entire life in a remote village.
B.Because he built a canal to bring water to a remote village in the mountains.
C.Because he dedicated himself to his work of boosting the local economy.
D.Because he learnt water conservancy technology at the age of 53.
2. What does the underlined word “dubbed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Nicknamed.B.Worshiped.C.Teased.D.Tricked.
3. Which of the following is RIGHT according to the text?
A.Everyone was confident that water would come to the village one day.
B.The village gained access to electricity in 1995.
C.Huang started to dig the canal at the age of 53.
D.Huang raised money from the local villagers.
4. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A.A Heart of Learning Never Grows Old

4 . What is soy(大豆)? And is soy bad for you? Nature is so amazing that everything is there. Soy is such a wonderful creation. The food is one of just a handful of complete vegetarian proteins. Soy products, for example, tofu, contain some important substances. Because your body is unable to produce these important substances, they must come from food sources.

Regular intake of soy may help with reducing high blood pressure. In fact, a review study found that soy protein may significantly help your body work. Soy is also one of 13 foods that help to lower blood fat naturally.

5 . On a cold January evening, Austrew sat in her car in a Nebraska parking lot, wondering whether she was going to a comedy class. For 20 minutes, the 33-year-old journalist and mom of two sat with some thoughts of self-doubt, “I can't do this. I'll be the worst one.” Then she turned off the engine, took a few deep breaths, and worked up the courage to go inside with a little hope.

For Austrew, trying comedy was the first small step to improve her self-confidence. “I've lacked self-confidence all my life,” she says. “I didn't have the courage to try anything new.” So she made a list of all the things she was afraid to attempt and then asked herself, “What if I didn't let my excuses win?” The comedy class was her biggest target and her family firmly supported her.

Her fear disappeared as soon as she walked into the class. Her classmates were also beginners, and she discovered that she was perfectly capable of earning a few laughs and making new friends. Over the next two years, Austrew went on to deal with other what-ifs, including writing a book. “Self-confidence is like a muscle—you have to exercise it constantly,” she says.

Some people are blessed with a seemingly unshakable positivity, but most people need to learn how to pull themselves up by their own efforts. Psychologists say we tend to experience our least self-confidence in our teenage years and spend much of our adult lives slowly rebuilding it. Staying positive has been tough in the past year. Since the pandemic(流行病) began, more and more adults have been reported signs of depression or low self-worth. Thankfully, like Austrew, we can also learn to feel better about ourselves and strengthen our feelings of hope. Of course, anyone experiencing the terrible signs should seek professional help.

1. How did Austrew feel before she took the comedy class?
A.Scared and unsure.B.Excited and curious.
C.Confident and proud.D.Hopeless and helpless.
2. Why did Austrew decide to take the comedy class?
A.To become modest.B.To build her self-confidence.
C.To celebrate her recovery.D.To realize her childhood dream.
3. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Austrew?
A.Her difficulty in learning comedy.
B.Her capability of making new friends.
C.Her positive efforts to conquer herself.
D.Her fear of getting along with beginners.
4. What will probably be discussed next?
A.Signs of the pandemic.
B.Ways to get self-confidence.
C.New medical discoveries about depression.
D.People's experiences in their teenage years.

8 . If you've ever considered training for a marathon, but you are a bit scared by the idea of 26. 2 miles, here is some motivation.

A slow and steady six-month training program designed to gradually build up endurance, gave a group of novice ( 新手) runners , ages 21 to 69, an impressive boost to their heart health.    1    Using these images, researchers documented reductions in aortic artery stiffness (大动脉僵硬).

“As you get older, the normal aging process causes changes in your heart and your vessels," the study author Dr. Bhuva says.“And hardening of the arteries increases the risk of many diseases."     2    Many studies have shown that exercise over a lifetime reduces aortic stiffness.

The training program was a slow build-up over six months. But it turned out that the older, slower runners saw the most benefits, in terms of reducing blood pressure and arterial stiffness. Even among people with existing heart disease, regular physical activity can help improve heart health.    3

Ready to go? 2 tips to get started with your running goals.

Tip 1: Commit to a specific race or event.

18 million people in the U. S. participated in road races last year. If a marathon sounds frightening, aim for a half or a 5K.    4    Parkrun USA organizes timed 5K races around the country that are free and open to everyone.

Tip 2:    5

“We normally tell our patients, look, you need to run or exercise, 150 minutes a week. But, of course, that's very boring for people to follow," Bhuva says. When you find a group or a partner to train with, it will be more likely that you'll stick with it.

A.The value of the new marathon study is to show how people can make improvements.
B.Each of the 138 runners received a scan at the beginning and end of the training.
C.And research shows that exercise can help ease anxiety, depression, even sleep disorders.
D.Most people can find a way to be more physically active, whether it is cycling or rowing,
E.But your lifestyle and habits can modify the rate and extent of these changes
F.Find a group or a partner.
G.The simple act of registering may motivate you to start training.
