If you have learnt some maths at school, you can quite quickly work out that one eleventh is about 9 percent. But did you know that 9 percent is also the number of children who is not at school? That’s right—one in 11 children is studying and probably even cannot do the simple maths you just did so very easy. They drop out of school because our families are too poor and they have to work like adults. In 2013, million of children and teenagers were out of the school. Most live in poor countries, and there are also some boys and girls who cannot go to school in rich countries. If you are one of the lucky ones who can go to a senior high school, you should be grateful to the opportunity. So the next time you feel like you do not want to do bored, difficult homework or go to class, think about the children who don’t have the chance to get a good education. Make the most of your education and make the world better place.

3 . In America, when the eighth graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.

Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth-grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.

One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc. These clubs allow students from different grades. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications (申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.

What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.

4 . Many people think that listening is a passive(被动的) business. It is just the opposite. Listening well is an active exercise of our attention and hard work. It is because they do not realize this, or because they are not willing to do the work, that most people do not listen well.

Listening well also requires total concentration upon someone else. An essential part of listening well is the rule known as “bracketing”. Bracketing includes the temporary giving up or setting aside of your own prejudices and desires, to experience as far as possible someone else’s world from the inside, stepping into his or her shoes. Moreover, since listening well involves bracketing, it also involves a temporary acceptance of the other person. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing to open up the inner part of his or her mind to the listener. True communication is under way and the energy required for listening well is so great that it can be accomplished only by the will to extend oneself for mutual growth.

Most of the time we lack this energy. Even though we may feel in our business dealings or social relationships that we are listening well, what we are usually doing is listening selectively. Often, we have a prepared list in mind and wonder, as we listen, how we can achieve certain desired results to get the conversation over as quickly as possible or redirected in ways more satisfactory to us. Many of us are far more interested in talking than in listening, or we simply refuse to listen to what we don’t want to hear.

It wasn’t until toward the end of my doctor career that I have found the knowledge that one is being truly listened to is frequently therapeutic. In about a quarter of the patients I saw, surprising improvement was shown during the first few months of psychotherapy, before any of the roots of problems had been uncovered or explained. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but chief among them, I believe, was the patient’s sense that he or she was being truly listened to, often for the first time in years, and for some, perhaps for the first time ever.

1. The phrase “stepping into his or her shoes” in paragraph 2 probably means _______.
A.preparing a topic list firstB.focusing on one’s own mind
C.directing the talk to the desired resultsD.experiencing the speaker’s inside world
2. What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?
A.How to listen well.B.What to listen to.
C.Benefits of listening.D.Problems in listening
3. According to the author, in communication people tend to ________.
A.listen activelyB.listen on purpose
C.set aside their prejudicesD.open up their inner mind
4. What type of writing the article likely to be?
A.Science fictionB.A news report.C.A medical report.D.Popular science

The Silk (丝绸) Road was a route that connected people from the East and the West for hundreds of years and allowed     1     (they) to trade valuable goods with each other. But there’s more to the story. The Silk Road should     2     (real) be called the Silk Roads. The Silk Road,     3     started in China, went west and branched out into many routes.

The Silk Road started to take shape (成形) in the second century BC. Most people know that valuable goods travelled along the route: silk and tea from China; jewels and wood from India; gold and animals from East Africa. These goods     4     (trade) in cities along the route or ended up as far west     5     in Europe.

But the people     6     (travel) along the Silk Road were carrying something far     7     (valuable) than their goods. They were carrying ideas and technology. European travelers returned home with stories of huge Chinese ships they had seen. The compass (指南针) is an example of an     8     (invent) that came west from China. Europeans learned from Korean maps, which were advanced for the 1400s.

9     was the Silk Road that shaped the world we know today. Many routes were a way for different people     10     (meet) each other and talk about the developing world.

6 . Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn't to just force (逼迫) an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.

Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association (联系) between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants (参与者) first do an “unusual-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could.

Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.

Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity.

But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious (无意识的) thought”. Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way.

When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.

Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.

1. The “unusual-use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants________.
A.complete an easy task
B.complete a very difficult task
C.take a 12-minute break
D.think of various ways to use an object
2. Why did the participants who completed the easy task perform best?
A.They were not actively working to solve the easy task.
B.They daydreamed and it helped them be more creative.
C.They were daydreaming while performing the difficult task.
D.They skipped the 12-minute break to complete the task again.
3. The passage mainly wants to tell us that________.
A.brainstorming is important to creative ideas
B.daydreaming is a way to improve creativity
C.problem-solving skills are important in our lives
D.the more we exercise brains, the more ideas we'll get

9 . London’s newest skyscraper (摩天大楼)is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better.
The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶)• He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren’t regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆)of the ships that were once on the river Thames.
The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices.
Before building work began, a lot of people didn’t want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.
Other critics don’t like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor.
The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.
1. London’s newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of ._____
A.its cost
B.its size
C.its shape
D.its height
2. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to _____
A.change London’s skyline
B.inherit London’s tradition
C.imitate the Egyptian style
D.attract potential visitors
3. The critics who refer to social division think the Shard_______ .
A.is only preferred by the rich
B.is intended for wealthy people
C.is far away from the poor area
D.is popular only with Londoners
4. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Shard: Cheers and Claps
B.The Shard: Work of a Great Architect
C.The Shard: New Symbol of London?
D.The Shard: A Change for the Better?
