People have been exploring the secrets of ancient Maya civilisation for     1     (age). It is the lack of modern technology in Maya society     2     makes its achievements mysterious. The Maya built     3     (impress) palaces and temples without the use of wheels and metal tools. They knew a lot about mathematics and astronomy. What’s     4     (much), they invented a writing system, which was so complex that no one has been able to interpret it completely. Its civilisation was     5     its peak by 700 AD. But it began to mysteriously decline within just a couple of generations.

People are searching for the reason why Maya civilisation     6     (collapse). Researchers have different opinions about it. Maybe it is due to a natural disaster or a deadly disease. Some research seems to show that the Maya people themselves may have played     7     role in their downfall. Turning wetlands into fields for agriculture, they reduced     8     (they) ability to cope with natural disasters. Therefore, a series of droughts occurred around 900 AD,     9     (lead) to food shortages, conflicts and     10     ( eventual) the downfall of the cities.

The rise and fall of this civilisation not only give us the mysteries of the Maya but also leave us thinking about our own past, present and future.

6 . A year back I received a full scholarship (奖学金) to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work paid off. My mom had spent a lot on my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, took part in various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new part of my life.

Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn't like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was missing my family, my home and everything in my hometown so much and I didn't know how to deal with my broken heart.

To_distract_myself,_I threw myself into my studies. I also found a ton of jobs. In any free time, I started forcing myself to go to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn't think about how lonely I felt. Soon after, I began to control my eating, considering it another solution to my homesickness(想家). But soon there was something wrong with me.

Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor told me I had no choice but to take time away from school, I started to fear. How could I stop? School was what I was best at. “I'm not so bad,” I thought in my head. But the result was that I was taken to hospital again a month later and my mother came heartbrokenly. I had to take a semester off from school, and go to the treatment center near my home.

If there are girls who are suffering similarly, I hope you know that there is hope and that you should have a positive attitude towards life. Though you may feel alone, there are so many people who can understand your struggle. That's why I want to share my story.

8 . In a small house in Belgrade, a teenage girl is drying her hair, while two others eat nearby. Several boys are having their temperature tested at the door. It is another busy day for Svratiste, which is Belgrade’s first center for children who live on the streets. For years, the building has provided warmth and shelter for the city’s most ignored children.

Since opening in 2007, Svratiste has welcomed hundreds of children, some as young as five years old. They come here to warm up, wash or eat. The kids that come to the center are all aged 5 to 15. What’s common for all of them is that they work in the street and live in extreme poverty. Also very few ever go to school.

Svratiste’s team of 13 social workers, psychologists and other experts have welcomed more than 1,400 children over the years. Money for the group’s operations comes from donations. Some people regularly bring in clothes and other aid. The group recently set up another center in a new part of town. Usually, the two centers are open every day. But both were sealed off because of restrictions when the COVID-19 pandemic(新型冠状病毒疫情)started in March. When Belgrade reopened in May, most of the children came back.

10 . An American company says it has developed the world's first true jetpack(喷气机) for personal flight. It looks simple enough that almost anyone could use it to fly around.

The flying machine is built like a backpack. It looks similar to the bags people use to carry anything from food to books on their back. The device is powered by two jet engines. The engines can operate on either airplane fuel or automobile fuel. It can fly for periods up to 10 minutes. It can reach 100 kilometers per hour and fly up to 3,000 meters in the air.

The company says its personal flight vehicle has performed more than 400 test flights with no major problems. It says the jetpacks are still being developed and improved. The company recently launched a crowdfunding(众筹) campaign online - with a $1 million goal - to raise money for more research and testing.

JetPack Aviation's chief executive officer, David Mayman, says, “In the past, he adds, sensors used in the equipment could cost up to $100,000. Now it costs less than one dollar.” Lower costs and improvements in turbine(涡轮机)technology have made it possible for the company to develop several other devices besides it.

Another version of the jetpack, the JB-11, will be even more powerful. Mayman predicts this model will be used by first responders or the military during search and rescue operations.

The public demonstration of the JB-10 clearly showed the jetpack giving its passenger a smooth takeoff and landing. The equipment also appeared easy to operate and the device provided a stable test flight.

But the chance to own this flyer comes at a very high price. The JB-10 device is currently listed at $250,000.
