文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者学习成绩优异,还善于处理家庭关系,同时作者还在养老院做义工。养老院志愿服务作者带来了极大的满足感。

1 . I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.

Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.

My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.

Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate and find great satisfaction in it, after all.

1. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A.He is content with his learning achievements.B.His good grades got him a good job.
C.He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.D.His views on social values are well known.
2. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A.A bystander (旁观者).B.A judge.C.A helper.D.A destroyer.
3. What is the greatest achievement for the author?
A.The contribution to volunteering.B.The success in exams.
C.The recovery of confidence in life.D.The work in school’s service.
4. Why does the author want to study social work at university?
A.To gain a well-paid job.B.To give his life a purpose.
C.To better help the disadvantaged.D.To meet his grandparents’ expectations.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了在这个数字信息时代,人们容易被科技产品所控制,如果人类不想被互联网时代的工具所控制,就要学会利用这些技术的积极方面,避开消极方面。
5 . We are often so attracted by the promises of modern digital life that we fail to notice its danger. It’s that feeling of losing control that we get a dozen times a day, from when we get distracted (分心) with our phones in a discussion to when we can’t appreciate a private moment without sharing it with virtual audience.

In my first attempt to get control over my technology use, I set my phone to vibrate rather than ring. Soon after, another problem appeared. The act of continually checking the phone became a habit. I knew then that using only tips to permanently reform digital life is difficult. We should go past the notification settings (通知模式) on our devices or apps and consider the more essential topic of why we use so many apps in the first place. What all of us who are struggling with these challenges need is a technology usage philosophy, something that explains from the ground up which digital tools we allow into our lives, why, and under what conditions.

Cal Newport, a professor of computer science, defines Digital Minimalism (极简主义) as a “philosophy of technology use in which you focus your online time on a small number of carefully selected activities that strongly support the things you value, and then happily miss out on everything else.”

To do so, however, we cannot passively allow the tools and apps provided by the internet age to control how we spend our time or how we feel. Instead, we must take steps to draw the positive aspects of these technologies while sidestepping the negative aspects.

1. What does “its danger” in the first paragraph refer to?
A.Feeling depressed.
B.Getting distracted in a discussion.
C.Giving up private moments.
D.Losing control of your digital life.
2. Why does the author mention his own experiences?
A.To make a comparison.
B.To explain a phenomenon.
C.To bring in a better solution.
D.To clarify misunderstandings.
3. Which of the following will digital minimalists agree to?
A.Ignoring the side effect of digital tools.
B.Devoting your screen time to valuable things.
C.Spending more time selecting information.
D.Getting away from entertainment apps.
4. What’s the text mainly about?
A.Reforms in life.
B.Technology challenges.
C.Apps and social media sites.
D.Technology usage philosophy.

Cleveland Way

7 . As of 2020, the world's biggest lithium-ion (锂离子) battery is hooked up to the Southern California power grid and can provide 250 million watts of power, or enough to power about 250,000 homes. But it's actually not the biggest battery in the world: these lakes are.

Wait - how can a pair of lakes be a battery? To answer that question, it helps to define a battery: it's simply something that stores energy and releases it on demand. The lithium-ion batteries that power our phones, laptops, and cars are just one type. They store energy in lithium ions.

How do the two lakes store and release energy? First, one is 300 meters higher than the other. Electricity power pumps that move billions of liters of water from the lower lake to the higher one. This stores the energy by giving the water extra gravitational potential energy. Then, when there's high demand for electricity, valves (阀门) open, releasing the stored energy by letting water flow downhill to power 6 giant turbines that can generate 3 billion watts of power for 10 hours.

Unfortunately, neither of the giant batteries we've talked about so far is big enough to power multiple cities. The two lakes setup requires specific geography, takes up a lot of land, and has high upfront costs to build. The giant lithium-ion battery in California can power about 250,000 homes, yes, but only for an hour. Lithium-ion batteries also require certain heavy metals to make. These resources are limited, and mining them causes environmental damage. Inventors all over the world are rising to the challenge of making batteries that can meet our needs - many of them even weirder than the two lakes.

1. Why is the world's biggest lithium-ion battery mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To make a comparison.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To stress its importance.
D.To declare a fact.
2. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A.With the help of the pumps, the two lakes store energy.
B.The water flow by itself to release the stored energy.
C.The two lakes setup is able to power multiple cities.
D.Lithium-ion batteries are environmentally friendly.
3. What will most probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.Inventors' worries.B.Inventors' efforts.
C.Stranger batteries.D.New challenges.
4. Which is the best title for the passage?
A.Battery Inventors Face New Challenges.
B.The World's Biggest Battery Looks Nothing Like a Battery
C.Giant Batteries Fail to Meet Our Needs.
D.Newly-invented Batteries.

8 . The prevalence of melanoma (黑素瘤) has been rapidly rising around the world for nearly a century. While some of the increase may be due to better detection, researchers also believe it’s because we’re spending more time outdoors in the sun, vacationing to warmer climates during the winter and using tanning beds. That rise is concerning, since melanoma is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer.

Most of us know to cover up and apply sunscreen on hot, sunny days, but when fall arrives, we tend to drop those habits. Experts warn that’s a mistake. Though there’s less need for sun protection after summer ends, exposure to UV rays still adds up.

What precautions you should take to defend against melanoma during the cooler months depends on where you are in the world. That’s because the further away you are from the equator, the more UV rays weaken in the winter. “In southern England or Canada, the daily dose of UVA on a clear summer day is 6.5 times higher than on a clear winter day,” says Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatologists. “People in those countries typically receive only about 5% of their annual UV exposure in the winter months.”

But no matter where you are, even during colder, lower risk months, it’s a mistake to put your sun-protection habits on ice. “It’s important to wear sun-screen when there is a lot of glare from the snow,” says Victoria Mar, director of the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital in Mel-bourne, Australia.

Finally, you should monitor your moles (痣). “Early detection of melanoma is vital for successful treatment,” says Diffey. If it’s caught before it spreads to other parts of the body, the patient will have 99% of chance to survive for five years. If it’s caught late, that can drop to 25%. Warning signs are a mole that’s changing size, shape or colour, or one that’s asymmetrieal-sometimes referred to as “ugly duckling” moles. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor.

1. What’s the main cause of the rise of melanoma?
A.The climate change.B.Better detection.
C.More exposure to the sun.D.The increase of skin cancer.
2. What’s a mistake according to experts?
A.Applying sunscreen in summer.
B.Wearing sun-screen when there is snow.
C.Using sunscreen during lower risk months.
D.Dropping sun-protection habits in winter.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Prevention is better than cure.
B.Health is better than wealth.
C.A disease known is half cured.
D.When the sun comes in, the doctor comes out.
4. What is the best title of the text?
A.Detect MelanomaB.Beware Winter Rays
C.Monitor Your MolesD.Spend Less Time Outdoors

9 . Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.

There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

1. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of?
A.Cycling around a lake.
B.Motor racing in the desert.
C.Playing basketball in a gym.
D.Swimming in a sports center.
2. What do we know about golf from the passage?
A.It is popular in Portugal and Spain.
B.It causes water shortages around the world.
C.It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
D.It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
3. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _________.
A.it is an outdoor sport
B.it improves our health
C.it uses fewer resources
D.it is recommended by experts
4. The author writes the passage to _________.
A.show us the function of major sports
B.encourage us to go in for green sports
C.discuss the major influence of popular sports
D.introduce different types of environment-friendly sports
