1 . Super communicators are people who are consistently able to create real connections with others just by listening and talking. The following are four habits of super communicators.
They know what kind of conversation they’re having. Super communicators are usually able to respond accordingly. If you’re having a practical conversation, your friend might ask you to help make hard decisions.
They prove they’re listening. There are plenty of ways to appear like you’re listening, like making eye contact or nodding. To do that, experts suggest a technique called “cycle for understanding”. Ask a question and listen to the response. Repeat what they just told you. Ask your conversation partner if you got what they said correct.
They ask a lot of the right questions. Research shows that highly effective communicators tend to ask 10 to 20 times as many questions as everyone else. They may simply be follow-up questions like “What happened next?”. Super communicators also ask questions that get people to open up.
A.They aim to understand. |
B.Experts call them “deep questions”. |
C.They are persuasive communicators. |
D.The decisions should be easy to carry out. |
E.This practice sounds simple but is powerful. |

3 . How to communicate complex information?
Did you ever have to read a presentation where you felt like you’re lost in confusing terms, data and concepts? Are you giving others this same experience?
Use interactive content. It gets the readers more involved in your presentation by letting them play an active part.
Narrate your content.
Use examples and fables. They can help explain clearly the complexity of ideas for they are what we’ve already known and understood.
A.Show, don’t tell |
B.Make every word count. |
C.This makes the complex concepts less new and more familiar |
D.If you don’t sound excited, the listeners won’t feel excited either |
E.Storytelling is another powerful tool for communicating complex concepts. |
F.Communicating complex information is a common challenge in presentations |
G.For example, allow them to choose the content route they wish to take and control the pace. |
4 . Every person is unique. Although you can find a common interest, there will always be individual differences in the way each of you was raised. To maintain harmony in a relationship with another person, you should try to understand these differences. It will be full of obstacles (障碍), but don’t worry.
When you deal with a person who is different from you, try to learn more about him by spending some of your time talking to him.
Show respect to the differences of a person.
Make connections with the person who is different from you.
A.Share some details regarding your life |
B.That’s what you call a cultural difference |
C.All you just need to do is to follow these tips |
D.Everyone has a right to be treated with respect |
E.But it does not mean you need to always agree with him |
F.By doing so, you can see what makes him different from you |
G.You may invite him to a gathering or discuss something both of you enjoy |
5 . It has been a hard year for the farmers in Michigan and more attention needs to be paid to their emotional well-being, according to a report written by Jim Zook, director of the Michigan Corn Growers Association.
“Nobody has seen a year that has dealt with so many challenges that we have seen with the weather, the markets, the trade and the politics. All of them together have become a storm,” said Zook.
The farmers have been struggling this year because of volatile (易变的) weather and markets. According to Zook, some corn growers will not be able to go on for another year. He said the Michigan Corn Growers Association was putting together programs to provide emotional support for the farmers. “The biggest thing is that we just want to make sure that the farmers in Michigan will work together through this difficult time,” said Zook.
Zook said planting was delayed in the spring because of the cold and wet weather. “We didn’t get as many acres (英亩) planted as what we had hoped,” said Zook. “And so there were a number of acres that kept idle this year.” Zook said he was hopeful that the snow would melt. If it did, he said the farmers would still be able to harvest the corn. But he said if the snow melted, they then would need low temperatures to freeze the ground so the ground could support the weight of heavy harvesting equipment for the corn.
“The challenge will appear in soybean (大豆) harvest because they are lower to the ground,” said Zook. “And if that snow is up on the bean, they won’t be able to get them.”

7 . To dozens of kindergartners in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, it was as if Italian cook Franco Bergamino was performing a “magic show.” He was greeted by waves of oohs and ahhs as the kids watched him magically turn dough, egg, sugar and fruit into artwork.
The scene was part of the activities of the 2021 World Week of Italian Cuisine's Chongqing station. The sixth edition of the World Week of Italian Cuisine was held in late November in several cities across China. The event aimed to fully present the Italian cooking tradition and bring a real Italian taste.
“This year's event stressed tradition and sustainability(可持续性). Both are also the Italian diet spirit, which is to use simple ingredients to make nutritious diet,” said Guido Bilancini, Consul General of Italy in Chongqing. More than 17 restaurants, bars, hotels and supermarkets in southwestern Chinese cities including Chongqing, Chengdu and Guiyang participated in this year's event.
Salvatore Portoghese owns a Western-style restaurant in Chongqing. “What I've been trying to do is to bring diners in Chongqing a real taste of my hometown,” said Portoghese. He is devoted to combining local ingredients with traditional Italian cuisine. At this year's food week, he used jam made of locally-grown pumpkins to replace the traditional ketchup(番茄酱)to make a Burrata Cheese pizza, a typical Italian food.
The Mediterranean-style diet, emphasizing plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and healthy fats, is catching on among Chinese food lovers. Even in the southwestern region where local cuisine is noted for distinctive spicy and pungent flavors and abundant use of oil and seasonings, a Mediterranean-style diet is favored by many youngsters pursuing a healthier lifestyle.
“Food is about connection and sharing. We believe the holding of such an event can help China and Italy explore more cooperation opportunities in areas where common interests lie,” said Bilancini.

8 . Are you patient? Do you have attention to detail, free time and access to a computer? Well, then a scientist might welcome your help. Researchers in the UK say it’s becoming important to count on common people to help them with their projects. They need people to examine data and submit their observations online.
British teenagers Sasha and Matthew are taking part in a study of penguins (企鹅) from the comfort of their homes. The pair look at pictures and tag (加标签于) photos identifying adults, chicks and eggs. Every click of their mouse is helping to build up a detailed picture of penguin colonies (群). They, and thousands of others, are helping scientists to understand why some colonies are growing and others are decreasing. Within the first four hours of Penguin Watch going live, “citizen scientists” marked more images than the research team did in five years.
Dr. Tom Hart, Penguin Watch Coordinator at Oxford University, says, “When you go beyond what a scientist can analyse to what a mass audience can do, then it increases beyond what any other project could do.”
The British Science Association says families are helping out with careful research. It made a difference to the Planet Hunters Project, which ran for five years. Volunteers looked at dots which showed how the brightness of a star changed at different points in its solar system.
According to Dr. Robert Simpson from Oxford University, who took part in the project, the volunteers discovered planets and these are now in published papers. He says with pride, “We can go and look at these planets with other telescopes and we know they exist because of those helpers.”
But how do scientists guard their research against accidental or deliberate mistakes in observation? Dr. Simpson isn’t worried. “We get lots of people looking at the same things, ”he says. The researcher warns that people who are mistakenly clicking on the site are very obvious and can be identified very quickly. So, there’s no fooling the scientists.
And to make sure things go well, the Penguin Watch paper will go through a peer review before being published. After that, every “citizen scientist” will be credited.
1. According to the passage, who will be suitable to help the scientists?A.An engineer who works in a company. |

“Next Friday we’ll have the annual Egg Drop Challenge. The challenge is simple — you have to build a protective container to keep an egg from breaking when dropped over the stadium wall.” said Mr. Beal.
Cassie and I grinned at each other. Always working on projects together, we’re perfect combination. She’s brainy while I am creative.
While waiting for Cassie to come over and work on the container, I made my favorite sandwich with the fluffy marshmallow (棉花糖) cream. That gave me an idea: We can put some marshmallow cream under the egg as a cushion.
I later told Cassie about it. But Cassie wasn’t interested. “I got a better idea. We put the egg in a basket with a parachute attached.” She said.
“It will never work.” I said.
“And Marshmallow cream will?” Cassie rolled her eyes. “The parachute is better than that stupid idea.”
I couldn’t believe it. She never called my idea “stupid” before. “Then I will build mine and you build yours, and we’ll just see whose is better.”
“Fine!” Cassie stormed out. And just like that, our friendship was smashed, like an egg dropped from the top of a stadium without marshmallow cream to protect it.
When Friday arrived, I saw Cassie’s Egg Force One. She had a handkerchief to create a small parachute. It was tied to a basket and, in the center of it, her egg.
My Egg-cellent Egg Cream didn’t look quite scientific. I used a layer of marshmallow cream and a layer of jelly (果冻) to support the egg.
The competition started. Everyone in my class carried their egg containers up three stadium steps and dropped them over the side wall. If your egg broke, you were out. If the egg survived, you had to walk up three more steps and drop it again. This went on until the last egg broke.
By the fourth launch, only Cassie and I were left.
