文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些有效的广告技巧,这些技巧能说服我们买东西。

3 . Advertisements are designed to persuade us, but which techniques are effective in talking us in to buy things?

1     Normalization can lead to higher sales of junk food as people start to see these habits as normal. This is like product placement—where products are shown or mentioned in TV shows and films. Beth, an assistant professor of marketing and advertisement, tells us that product placement is most effective when it is not too obvious.     2     It seems that a subtle (不易察觉的) approach can be more persuasive.

Appealing to our emotions is another strategy advertisers use.     3     Jannet, a senior lecturer in communication studies, explains that for fear to be an effective tool, we need to believe: when fears are raised, people tend to take action to make a difference, like buying something. But when fears are exaggerated (夸大) or we feel helpless, we are likely to switch off.

Advertisements often show perfect-looking people because marketers believe that we will desire to be like them and buy the products they support.     4     The research that she mentions shows these ads can make people feel bad and put them off products. These studies say that seeing a more human side of people can lead us to believe them.     5

So, it seems that the best technique advertisers can use to persuade people is to fully understand the people they are selling to.

A.Some of them use fear to persuade us.
B.One way is simply to describe something as normal.
C.Superstars are gradually losing their commercial value.
D.We become defensive if we know that someone is trying to sell us something.
E.However, a researcher in marketing points out this may not be the best strategy.
F.A common technique to make an emotional impact is to create a memorable slogan.
G.And endorsements (代言) from characters who admit their mistakes can be more believable.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。植入式广告是一种广告形式,公司向内容创造者支付费用,将其产品放在电影、电视节目或音乐视频中,随着观众转向网络视频,植入式广告已经成为了未来的一种广告趋势。

6 . Product placement (植入式广告) is a form of advertising in which a company pays a content creator to place its products on the set of a movie, TV show or music video. The oldest examples of products appearing in films date back to the production of a French motion picture in 1896. Recent years have witnessed the bloom of product placement. With viewers migrating to web videos, this trend makes sense.

When watching web videos, about 90% of consumers either skip or ignore those traditional ads that run before the video. So as advertisers struggle to reach potential consumers, they’re increasingly turning to product placement, spending their advertising budgets to get their ads into media content in ways that the ads can’t be skipped. Studies have shown product placement can increase viewer’s awareness of products and their positive attitudes toward them.

But not all product placement works as intended, and research has shown that advertisers need to engage in delicate dance with viewers to effectively influence them. Viewers tend to be turned off if the product placement is too obvious — as when a character in the show holds the product and talks about it. Most viewers don’t want to be immersed (沉浸) in an intense drama only to be reminded that they’re being targeted by corporations.

In contrast, viewers are most influenced by product placement in which the product or the brand name is spoken by one of the characters but not shown. These pieces of product placement are more likely to be noticed by viewers than those where products are simply shown on the screen. Also, viewers may be more attracted to product placement that appears earlier in a show or movie. Because they become more engaged as a movie or a show progresses. If the placement at the climax — the moment when their attention is fixed on what will happen next — they’re either less likely to notice the placement or more likely to be annoyed by it if they do notice it.

With increasing online viewers and better designed product placement, perhaps advertisers will consider product placement as their first choice. After all, it’s incredibly effective at getting the targeted audience interested without influencing their viewing experience.

1. What can we know about product placement?
A.It’s still popular nowadays.B.It first appeared in TV shows.
C.It was overlooked in the 1890s.D.It aims to make videos interesting.
2. What’s the advantage of product placement to advertisers over traditional ads?
A.It has a lower price.B.It’s more interesting.
C.It’s less likely to be ignored by viewers.D.It makes advertisers understand customers well.
3. What does the underlined part “be turned off” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Gain satisfaction.B.Get confused.C.Feel funny.D.Lose interest.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Product Placement: the Future Trend for Advertising
B.Product Placement: a New Driving Force Behind Movies
C.Product Placement: a Mirror of the Advertisement History
D.Product Placement: the Perfect Companion to Online Videos

7 . Dive into the classical world via the remains of an ancient merchant ship that dates all the way back to 5 BC as Greece is constructing its first underwater museum.

Some of Greece’s vast heritage of ancient shipwrecks are accessible to the public (divers and non-divers) for the first time ever in a series of underwater museums. The first opened on August 3, allowing visitors to explore the “Peristera shipwreck”, which has been at the bottom of the Aegean Sea for more than two thousand years after it sank in the 5th century BC near the northern Greek island of Alonissos. Since a fisherman discovered the ship in 1985, it has remained off-limits to the public but now visitors can explore it by sea or by virtual reality.

Researchers believe it’s the most important shipwreck from the classical era. It had been believed that a trading ship of that type didn’t exist until the Roman era some 400 years later. So when it was discovered years ago, it completely changed our understanding of shipbuilding in the ancient world.

Experts have yet to determine how or why it sank although there are some indications that a fire may have broken out. It’s believed that it was carrying 4, 000 vases of wine when it sank, most of which are still lying on the seabed, along with fishes and some little creatures who now call it home.

Greece had banned diving until 2004 or so, due to worries that undersea ancient heritage would be taken away but now the country is wholeheartedly hugging its rich underwater heritage. Access to the Peristera shipwreck is available through a new project that will create underwater museums across the Greek islands over the next two years. Divers will be able to tour the shipwreck with licensed guides and non-divers can feel like they’re underwater with virtual reality information centres on land.

1. What is the main idea of the text?
A.An underwater museum is under construction.
B.An ancient merchant ship is discovered.
C.Greece is trying to protect its heritage.
D.Divers are interested in Greece.
2. How long has the ship remained off-limits to the public?
A.For about 2,000 years.B.For about 400 years.
C.For about 40 years.D.For about 20 years.
3. Why do researchers regard it as the most important shipwreck?
A.It carried 4,000 vases of valuable wine.
B.It becomes the first underwater museum.
C.It corrected some of our misunderstanding.
D.It is the oldest merchant ship in the world.
4. What can be inferred from the text?
A.Some virtual reality equipment is on the ship.
B.All the visitors need to stay underwater to visit.
C.A fire must have broken out on the ancient ship.
D.There is more than one way to visit the museum.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文,主要介绍了四个比较好的电影推荐引擎。

8 . There are dozens of movie recommendation engines on the Web. They’re all different, but some are definitely better than others.

Rotten Tomatoes

Instead of telling Rotten Tomatoes which films you like, you can tell it what kind of films you enjoy, which actors you want to see, and other standards to help it find the best movie for you. There’s a lot of variability in the quality of Rotten Tomatoes recommendations but it’s also a nice way to find the right film for any mood.

Netflix

Netflix asks you to rate (评级) movies to determine which films you’ll want to see next. And although it does make it easy to rate movies and it does return huge lists, the ideas it gives you aren’t all that strong. It’s easy to use, but it’s not the best way to get movie recommendations.

Jinni

Whether you want to search for films based on your mood, time available, or reviews, the site has it all. But Jinni’s most amazing feature is its semantic search. You can enter terms like, “movies that have gangsters” or “films that show Chris Farley yelling” and the site will return films that match your question. Go use Jinni. You won’t regret it!

Criticker

Instead of just allowing you to rank films, Criticker compares your ratings to those of other users and see how closely your tastes match those of other users. Once the service finds matches, you can view other users’ lists and see which movies they like.

1. What makes Criticker special?
A.Comparing users’ ratings.B.Ranking your favourite films.
C.Offering different standards.D.Finding films based on mood.
2. Which one does the author recommend most?
A.Netflix.B.JinniC.Criticker.D.Rotten Tomatoes.
3. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To recommend the best movies online.
B.To show how to use movie search engines.
C.To introduce several movie search engines.
D.To explain how to find the best movies online.
