文章大意:本文是说明文。介绍了在亚马逊雨林深处发现的一种黑土(ADE)可以帮助恢复世界各地的森林。

1 . Brazilian scientists think they might have found a way to undo the damage caused by the cutting down of trees and turn farmland back into forest. The secret lies in ancient local knowledge of soil.

Amazonian Dark Earth (ADE) is a thick, black soil found deep in the Amazon rainforest, and it could help restore forests around the world. ADE is a kind of compost (soil made from dead plants and animals). Various kinds of compost are sold in gardening centers around the world, but ADE is unique. It was created by indigenous people from the Amazon between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago. The Amazonian people, today known as Amerindians, created ADE using charcoal from fires, animal bones, food waste and poo. It contains microbes (微生物) that help to turn chemicals in the soil into useful nutrients that feed plants and trees.

Vast areas of the Amazon have been cut down, mostly to make way for grassland for raising cattle. Scientists are looking for a way to turn grassland back into rainforest and revive forest ecosystems. These support thousands of animal and plant species, many of which are unique to the area. Forests also absorb lots of carbon dioxide.

To see if the Amazon’s special soil could help, the scientists grew grasses and trees in ADE, regular earth and a mixture of both. Trees grown in ADE were up to six times taller than those in regular soil. ADE takes hundreds of years to create, so the scientists can’t simply make more. Team member, Dr Siu Mui Tsai, said that instead they want to try and “copy its characteristics”, especially its helpful microbes, and see if it could help to restore natural habitats.

B.Soil with similar features is in development.
C.ADE works better when mixed with regular soil.
D.ADE has been proved effective in growing trees.
4. Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A biology textbook.B.An archeology journal.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四个世界上著名的湖泊。

2 . Longing for the most amazing places on the planet? You can do no wrong with these lakes across the globe.

Five Flower Lake

Set in the striking karst landscape of the Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan province, China, Five Flower Lake is extraordinarily clear, with visibility to a depth of 40 metres. Five Flower is one of a series of blue-, green-and sky-colored lakes blocked by rock falls, but it differs from the others as its waters change color, looking sometimes yellow, sometimes green, but usually diamond blue. In winter, Five Flower never freezes; in summer, it never dries up. Local wildlife living in the surrounding mountain forests include the rare giant panda and the golden snub-nose monkey.

Crater Lake

The deep-blue waters of Crater Lake in Oregon, US, fill the outlet of an ancient volcano that collapsed 7,700 years ago. Its strangest occupant is the “Old Man of the Lake”, a nine-metre-tall tree stump(树桩), which has stood upright in the water for more than a century. No rivers or streams enter the lake. Water loss in summer is compensated by winter snow and rain, the entire body of water being replaced every 250 years.

Lake Ohrid

Ancient Lake Ohrid has been around for about five million years and crosses the mountainous border between Macedonia and Albania. It has unique plants and wildlife, including the Ohrid “plashica”, a fish native to the lake, whose scales(鳞片) are used to make Ohrid pearls.

Lake Maggiore

Surrounded on three sides by the Lipontine Alps and touching the plain of Lombardy to the south, Lake Maggiore is Italy’s longest lake. Considered part of the country’s lake district, it is shared with Switzerland. Characterized by a Mediterranean-style climate, temperatures here are mild all year. This has given rise to some of northern Italy’s most wonderful gardens, which appear to float like flower-decked boats on the water.

1. What makes Five Flower Lake different from other lakes?
A.Its agreeable climate.B.The rare local wildlife.
C.Its color-changing waters.D.The visibility of waters.
2. How does Crater Lake mainly get water supply?
A.By artificial rain.B.By snow and rain.
C.From nearby streams.D.From an ancient tree.
3. Which lake has a typical warm climate?
A.Five Flower Lake.B.Crater Lake.
C.Lake Ohrid.D.Lake Maggiore.

7 . Got big plans for Friday night? That’s OK, we don’t either.

Guess we’ll all have to make do by watching the celestial (天空的)show that will take place that night.

First, there will be a full moon. That’s always fun, but this one will be a little more special. It’s known as a “snow moon.” The name comes from the fact that the heaviest snows usually fall during February, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.

But if that’s not special enough, there’s also an eclipse (月食)that night. It’ll be a penumbral lunar eclipse, meaning ifs a partial eclipse that leaves sections of the moon darkened by the earth’s shadow. No, it won’t be as spectacular as those “blood moon” eclipses. It’ll be subtler. The level of darkness it reached during the eclipse may or may not be apparent; it just depends on where you are when you view it.

In North America, the eclipse begins at 5:34 p.m. ET and ends at 9:53 p.m. ET, according to astronomy website EarthSky. The eclipse will be at its height around 7:44 p.m. ET.

If that’s still not enough, let’s throw in a comet (彗星)to the night’s festivities.

Comet 45P (it has a much longer name, but we won’t burden you with it here) is visible as it flies by Earth. The comet will get within 7.4 million miles of the planet as it makes its closest approach this weekend, according to Universe Today.

Comet 45P will be the most visible a couple of hours after the eclipse, so look to the skies again around 3 a.m. ET Saturday and find the greenish-blue light with a tail.

And don’t forget, a total big-time solar eclipse will streak across the United States on August 21st.

1. According to the text, what can be viewed on Friday night?
A.A blood moon.
B.A total solar eclipse.
C.A partial lunar eclipse.
D.A comet without a tail.
2. If you want to see Comet 45P, you will need to        .
A.wait around 7:44 p.m. ET
B.stay up until 9:53 p.m. ET
C.wake up before 3:00 a.m. ET
D.start watching at 5:34 p.m. ET
3. The author writes the text with the purpose of         .
A.introducing basic astronomy to the media
B.sharing new discoveries with astronomy researchers
C.promoting astronomical events among science scents
D.informing average readers of recent celestial phenomena
4. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Comet 45P will be visible as it approaches the earth
B.Penumbral lunar eclipse will happen on Friday night
C.Suggestions of fun scientific exhibitions for the coming weekend
D.Eclipse, full moon, comet team up to put on a show on Friday night
