2 . Chinese culture values family bonds (纽带) very much. Family members don’t just gather during the holidays, in fact they often live under one roof all year round.
Different cultures have different family values.
In most East Asian cultures, extended families (大家庭) are common.
In many Western countries, most families are nuclear families (小家庭). These are only made up of children and their parents.
Additionally, the duties parents have toward their children can also differ.

3 . As celebrated in the United States, the holiday of Thanksgiving usually centers on a big meal. Typical dishes include bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and above all, turkey. How did turkey become the centerpiece (最重要的菜) of this meal?
It is often assumed that today’s Thanksgiving menu originated in an event commonly considered as the “first Thanksgiving”. There is indeed evidence of a meal shared between Pilgrim settlers and Wampanoag people in late 1621, but historians think it’s not sure that turkey was served. They believe that the Pilgrims provided wild fowl (飞禽), while the Wampanoag brought deer for meat. Passenger pigeons, ducks, and other birds may have been the main course. Turkey, if present, was likely a side dish.
In 1789, George Washington issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation (正式公告), marking the first official celebration of Thanksgiving in the US. However, turkeys were not yet related to Thanksgiving. About 38 years later, the writer Sarah Josepha described a New England Thanksgiving, with a roasted turkey placed at the head of the table in her novel Northwood. In 1863, after President Abraham Lincoln announced Thanksgiving a national holiday, and turkey has since become a cherished tradition in Thanksgiving celebrations.
At that time, Americans didn’t have access to supermarkets. But large numbers of wild turkeys lived on many people’s land, making them easy to get for the big meal. Compared to more expensive meats, turkey also provided a much lower price and could feed larger groups of people because it weighed more. These made turkey a practical and appealing choice, contributing to its long-lasting popularity as a centerpiece for Thanksgiving feasts.
Today, turkey continues to stand as the star of the Thanksgiving feast, symbolizing tradition, warmth, and the cherished moments shared with loved ones around the table.

My grandmother died when my mother, Laura, was only five years old. The year was 1945 and life was extremely hard. As the youngest child, Laura was surrounded by the love of her father, brothers and sisters. However, it could never take the place of that of a mother’s. Worse still, as money was tight at that time, her family could not even afford her a doll for Christmas.
Later, Laura got married and set up her own family. In my mother’s life, her father, her husband and then her three children and then her grandchildren were the main focus of her life. She felt that she could make up for her sad childhood through her devotion to her family, but deep in her mind there was a dream waiting to be realized.
One afternoon in December, I was working in the bank as usual when I caught sight of the beautiful handmade dolls in one of my customers’ hand. She was taking orders for the coming Christmas. The dolls looked cute and adorable (可爱的). Without hesitation, I decided to get one for my five-year-old daughter, Kelly. Suddenly, an idea occurred to me. I asked my customer if she could make a special doll for my mother-one with grey hair and glasses: a grandmother doll. Having learned the past life experience of my mother, the doll maker accepted my request gladly, though it seemed to be a challenging job to her. So besides the Christmas tree, I also placed my order for two dolls: one blonde an one grey-haired.
Several days passed. I was expecting the arrival of the festival as well as the gifts when a friend visited and told me that his dad, who played Santa Claus, would make a visit to our town on Christmas morning. Knowing that my parents would also come to my house, I called his dad and asked him to deliver the gift to my mother. To my joy, his dad kindly agreed.
Everything was in place and I eagerly expected what was designed to be a most memorable moment in my mother’s life.

8 . I still remember my father’s embarrassment the day when he was invited to have dinner at a colleague’s house. Freshly arriving in Brazil, and not being able to look up on the Internet, he offended his hosts by making a hand gesture — a circle with the thumb and index finger. He had always understood it to mean “OK”, but in Brazil, it meant something different.
The incident was quickly forgotten. My father’s colleague understood that he probably wasn’t yet aware of the local meaning of the gesture. He gently explained it meant something rude, and then it was kept in mind under “things not to be done in Rio”.
I was reminded myself when touring China. After I replied to a friend’s WeChat message with a Van Gogh sticker that I thought meant “keep fighting”, another friend told me I used it wrong.
“The Chinese version is a bit different,” she said, taking out her phone and showing to me. “See these characters? They mean ‘I will hit you!’”
Life is full of crossed meanings. In India, you sign to someone to come over with your palm down, not up. And in the Middle East, you never use your left hand for anything public.
As adults, we understand that even if it hurts, a mistake is only an insult (侮辱) when it is made on purpose. Yet, many conflicts come from misunderstanding, and history is full of the unfortunate outcomes of cross-cultural communication.
My father’s pre-Internet Brazilian mistake was forgiven because of context — he had just arrived and he didn’t know its local meaning. But when context is absent or simply differently understood — especially in the social media — perhaps it is time we all think twice before typing or talking, especially when the consequences can be more severe than the misuse of a WeChat sticker.
1. What can be inferred from the author’s father’s story?A.Cultural differences are common. | B.The Internet helps to avoid mistakes. |
C.Misunderstandings lead to bad results. | D.The OK sign means differently in Brazil. |
A.To greet his friend. | B.To threaten his friend. |
C.To encourage his friend. | D.To make fun of his friend. |
A.Forgiveness. | B.Cultural gaps. | C.Cultural conflicts. | D.Mutual(相互的) respect. |
A.Tourism and Culture. | B.Language and Culture. |
C.Verbal Communication. | D.Cross-Cultural Communication. |
