2 . As students head to their Thanksgiving break, here comes a big homework assignment: StoryCorps wants tens of thousands of teenagers across America to interview their grandparents this Thanksgiving and upload their recordings to the Library of Congress.
The nonprofit oral history organization is asking high school history teachers to have their students record the interviews with StoryCorps free smartphone application. Recordings sent to the library will be shared with the public.
"The Great Thanksgiving Listen is an assignment that will last for generations," StoryCorps founder Dave Isay says. "When young people do these interviews and they hit 'send' at end of the interview to the library they know that their great-great-great-great-great-grand kids are going to listen to these conversations someday and get to understand where they come from and who their ancestors are."
He hopes it becomes an annual tradition that brings families closer together by using modern technology to preserve the wisdom of elders. The students could tap into memories of events dating back to the 1920s, but Isay says the stories are less important than the fact that two people are talking." The purpose of StoryCorps is to have the two people who have this conversation feel more connected with each other and give the person who is being interviewed the chance to be heard," he says.
Brandon Clarke, an administrator at the private Berkeley Carroll School, in Brooklyn, New York, is enthusiastic about tbc project. He says StoryCorps, which is headquartered near the school, has interviewed some of his teachers while developing an instructional guide for the Thanksgiving project. A couple weeks before the holiday, Berkeley Carroll students may get some classroom exercises aimed at sharpening their interview skills.
"How do you develop good questions? How do you go about conducting an interview? How do you build off of a really interesting response?"
But Isay says interviewing isn't hard. He says he has learned from listening to some of the 60,000 conversations StoryCorps has collected since 2003 that people are naturally good at it. "It's just a matter of concentrating, being present and making sure you're in a quiet place," he says. "I think people understand the importance of the moment and that they treat it very seriously."
About 13 million radio listeners hear edited versions of StoryCorps interviews every Friday on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition". StoryCorps also shares excerpts(节录)of recordings through animated videos, podcasts and its website.
Isay says the Thanksgiving project will help spread the idea that history comes from the bottom up. Clarice agrees. "This is a really great example of how oral history is really history, "he says. "For it to be legitimate(正统的)history, it doesn't have to appear in print in a carefully-edited book. Individual stories and individual perspectives are also part of history."

4 . One of the most recognizable symbols of Scotland is the kilt (百褶裙). Resembling knee-length skirts, kilts originated in the 16th century as a common form of clothing for men and boys living in an area of northern Scotland known as the Scottish Highlands. A special feature of kilts, even to this day, is the plaid (格子呢) patterns. These patterns were historically related to specific clans, which are family groups that share a relationship through ancestry or some other connections. Known as tartans (方格花纹), the plaid patterns are of various colors. Because of their popularity in the Scottish Highlands, the wearing of kilts and any tartan pattern in general was banned from 1746 to 1782 to try to control clans from that region that were opposed to the king at the time. After clans were no longer considered a threat to the king, the clothing ban was removed.
Although the removal of the ban meant people could once again wear kilts with their clan’s tartan, they did not become the regular dress of males there. Instead, they came to represent a traditional form of clothing, and be symbolic of national pride. Tartans of all types can be seen on show all over the world on April 6, Tartan Day, when people of Scottish ancestry celebrate their cultural treasure. Tartan Day originated in Canada in the mid-1980s. It spread to other communities of the Scottish diaspora in the 1990s.
Nowadays, tartans have been specifically created for individuals, families, institutions, and companies. Perhaps the best-known example of a tartan used by a company is that of the British company Burberry. Burberry has used tartans on a variety of products, including scarves, handbags, clothing, and other accessories. Although in 2019, Burberry announced it would reduce the number of products it produced to focus more on handbags as a way to increase profits, their iconic tartan continues to be a symbol of high fashion.

9 . Dining in France: Culture Shock
On my first weekend abroad, I attended a dinner party with my host family to celebrate the New Year. It was everything I had imagined a French dinner party would be --- multiple courses, a variety of cheeses, bottles of champagne, and slices of fresh bread. Then, at the end of the meal, the host called out. “Okay, everyone, get under the table!”
What? An earthquake broke out? I watched as the children came running into the dining room and hid under the table. As it turns out, in the days after the New Year, the French celebrate with the galette des rois, or the “king cake”, a special cake with its own set of traditions. There is a small toy hidden inside the cake, and whoever finds it in their serving is the winner. Before it is sliced, all the children hide under the table so that they cannot see who will get the slice with the toy.
I’ve learned that many French traditions focus on food, and often they’ve taken me by surprise! From time to time, I’ve experienced a sense of culture shock, the feeling of confusion in a new country when you’re adjusting to things that maybe unfamiliar to you. Thankfully, I haven’t run into anything too difficult to manage. Before leaving for France, I learned strategies from the International Programs Office, a facility which helps prepare students to deal with these kinds of ups and downs.
They explained the phenomenon with a line graph to illustrate the highs and lows of the experience. You may experience a “honeymoon” phase, where you find everything new and exciting or even better than your home country. You may also experience low points, where all these little differences may seem frustrating and overwhelming.
I encountered a new fun, food-related culture differences while in France. For example, the French eat with both wrists resting on the table, while many Americans tend to keep their left hands in their laps. I hadn’t even noticed the difference until my five-year-old host brother pointed it out! Moreover, on formal occasions, people tend to straighten their back. And it is also common to use bread as a utensil, holding it in your hand like a knife, or using it to clean up the plate at the end of the meal. Finally, I love hearing “Bon Appétit!” (Good appetite!”) before eating, whether I am seated at the table with my host family, or just grabbing a coffee at a nearby café!
