4 . People think that smartphones and laptops are evidence of progress. A certain amount of online searching, for instance, can be good for your brain, and there are apps that can promote brain functions. Yet technology advancements also come with some unintended consequences.

Studies have shown that blue-enriched light from electronic things like smartphones can disturb the body’s internal clock and make it impossible for you to stick to a proper sleep schedule. Losing sleep has negative effects on your brain, such as bad moods, decreased attention and problems of memory.

Technology makes it much easier to get distracted. For example, you step away from an important project to check your smartphone. Teens, in particular, are more distracted than ever. A recent survey of 2,400 teachers found that most educators feel students are more distracted than previous generations. Some 64 percent agreed with the idea that today’s digital technology does more to distract students than to help them academically.

And technology makes people much more forgetful than they used to be. The new generation are actually more likely to forget what day it is or where they put their keys than people over the age of 55, according to a Trending Machine survey. In a press about the survey, Jo Patricia, a doctor, said technology was to blame. “This is a generation that has grown up multitasking by using technology and is often accompanied by lack of sleep, which results in high levels of forgetfulness,” she said.

People who rely on GPS to get around have less activity in the hippo campus, an area of the brain involved in both memory and direction. A study from the University of London even found that taxi drivers had a more developed hippocampus (海马,大脑记忆核心部分) than non-taxi drivers — because they are so accustomed to using spatial (空间的) memory, rather than relying on GPS.

Now that you’re probably terrified of the effects of technology, let us remind you that you do have the power to prevent it. Just log off every once in a while!

1. How does technology affect students according to teachers?

C.Optimistic.D.Conservative.
3. Why do taxi drivers have a more developed hippocampus?
A.Because they mainly rely on GPS.
B.Because they do more mental exercise.
C.Because they use spatial memory more.
D.Because they have a better sense of balance.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.Surveys conducted in a school.

5 . We live in a town with three beaches. There are two parks less than 10 minutes’ walk from home where neighbourhood children gather to play. However, what my children want to do after school is pick up a screen — any screen — and stare at it for hours. They are not alone. Today’s children spend an average of four and a half hours a day looking at screens, split between watching television and using the Internet.

In the past few years, an increasing number of people and organisations have begun coming up with plans to counter this trend. A couple of years ago, film-maker David Bond realised that his children, then aged five and three, were attached to screens to the point where he was able to say "chocolate" into his three-year-old son’s ear without getting a response. He realised that something needed to change, and, being a London media type, appointed himself "marketing director for Nature". He documented his journey as he set about treating nature as a brand to be marketed to young people. The result was Project Wild Thing, a film which charts the birth of the Wild Network a group of organisations with the common goal of getting children out into nature.

"Just five more minutes outdoors can make a difference," David Bond says. "There is a lot of really interesting evidence which seems to be suggesting that if children are inspired up to the age of seven, then being outdoors will be a habit for life." His own children have got into the habit of playing outside now: "We just send them out into the garden and tell them not to come back in for a while."

Summer is upon us. There is an amazing world out there, and it needs our children as much as they need it. Let us get them out and let them play.

1. According to the author’s children, which are not their features?
A.They are addicted to electronics
B.They may have some friends who can play together
C.They like to gather in the park to play
D.They spend a lot of their time on electronics
2. How did David Bond advocate his idea?
A.By making a documentary film.B.By organizing outdoor activities.
C.By advertising in London media.D.By creating a network of friends.
3. What the film focuses about?
A.How do humans adapt to nature
B.How do the children conquer nature
C.How do the children like nature
D.How do the children stay away from the electronics
4. The author's purpose in writing the last sentence is ________.
A.Call on parents to take care of their children
B.Call on the children to play more
C.Call on the children to cherish the good summer times
D.Call on children to get more contact with nature

7 . Typical cyber-attacks (网络攻击) involve cyber-criminals sending out thousands or even millions of links and files.    1    Somebody always does. The best way to protect yourself is to learn more about cyber-attacks as well as how to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Cyber-attacks can happen to anybody

It doesn’t matter who you are, cyber-criminals can target you. White many often think of hacking victims as innocent of digital security, this isn't always the case.    2

Nowadays, cyber-criminals create fake websites and email addresses. You may think you're clicking a link only to download a ware onto your computer, but you may never know you have visited the wrong site and downloaded an infected file.

    3

While some things may be obvious such as account password changes, others aren't so easy to spot. Usually, hackers insert pieces of code into legal files and programs. And then, you might receive a file from a trusted sender. Sometimes, the data are even real, but the hacker may have inserted a few lines of code that can also infect your computer.    4     That's often the sign of malware (恶意软件).

How to prevent cyber-attacks

As with everything, prevention is the best medicine. So, instead of waiting for cyber-attacks to hit you, take the following steps to protect yourself.

Secure your online accounts with strong passwords. You can do this by using a password generator, which will create long and complicated passwords. Secondly, enable antivirus tools and scans to run in the background. They will keep an eye out for viruses and malware.    5    Finally, be careful with links and file downloads to make sure they are malware-free.

A.How to recognize the signs of cyber-attack.
B.What should I do if the computer is infected.
C.Therefore, you should take the time to check anything suspicious.
D.Double-check the links to make sure senders are who they claim to be.
E.Also, they can remove any threats before they create problems for you.
F.There are as many attacks that can fool even the most intelligent computer users.
G.They assume that someone will eventually fall into their traps and open an infected file or page.

10 . Look for Friendship in Cyberspace

In so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.     1     Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace. Rather, a person’s thoughts — or at least the thoughts they type — are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.

2     They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail miserably.     3     Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way. But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace.     4     And they don’t have to worry about what their “nonverbal” communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.

5     But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination fill in the blanks. This inevitably leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person.

So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”

A.Supporters of online relationships claim that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first.
B.Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen.
C.All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace.
D.Police can help us to identify the one we want to know.
E.However, some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with.
F.Gamers get a lot fun in cyberspace.
G.That is because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them.
