文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了除了给宠物食物和水,我们还能做些什么才能成为一个好的宠物主人。

1 . Many children want to have their own pets, but how to be a good pet owner? Besides giving them food and water, what else can we do to give our pets much love?

Provide your pet with the correct diet.

If you prefer to change the previous diet of your pet, do it slowly so that they adjust (适应) properly.     1     Young dogs will need different types of dog food compared to older dogs. And remember, do not overfeed your pet.

Clean their housing often.

Clean your pet’s home at least once a week and any other times if necessary. Generally, a pet’s home should be clean so it is a good environment for the animal.     2

Keep your pet clean.

If you have a dog that always plays in the mud, it’s necessary to give it a shower every day!     3     If it is too hot or too cold for you, then it will be the same for the animal.

Train your pet.

4     However, a lot of bad pet behavior is simply caused by boredom, so shake it up a little. If possible, take your pet to some classes.

    5

Put a collar on your pet with your personal information and the pet’s name. Remember to close the cage door so there is no chance of escaping and being in an unsafe place.

A.Never hurt or harm your pet.
B.Be an owner with a sense of duty.
C.No one wants a cat that jumps on the table.
D.Animals require different diets based on age.
E.Remember that you should check the water first with your hand.
F.Water should be fresh, clean and changed daily to keep your pet healthy.
G.Without good living conditions, an animal will get sick more, and feel unhappy.

文章大意:本文是篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了海洋生物学家布里安·米勒为了减少塑料污染和解决浪费问题,创建了名为Nada的商店。

2 . In the 2010s, 34-year old Brianne Miller travelled around the world as a marine (海洋的) biologist. No matter how remote the location, she made the same alarming discovery: large amounts of plastic polluting the water and threatening marine life. Miller knew she needed to do something.

Canadians throw out three million tons of plastic waste each year, 33 per cent of which comes from food packaging. Miller, determined to solve the problem at the source, envisioned a shop that not just banned the use of plastic bags—a place that avoided both wasteful packaging and the bad habit of wasting food itself.

To put her thought into practice, in June 2018, Miller opened one of the first zero-waste grocery stores in Canada. She named it Nada. You can bring your own containers (容器), though it’s not necessary: right by the front door are recycled glass or plastic containers, free for the taking.

The early days of the pandemic (疫情) were hard on the business. Because food sales were restricted (限制), Nada closed its doors to the public for 18 months. But then Miller turned to online ordering and delivery. The zero-waste deliveries are made by e-bike and electric vehicles. Everything from olive oil to fresh eggs comes delivered in recycled containers, which are collected and reused for the next round of deliveries.

Those containers do so much more than just reduce waste. They get people thinking big, just as Miller had hoped they would. “You can see how many times the container has been used,” she says.

1. What made Miller take action to deal with plastic waste?
A.The terrible situation of the ocean life.
B.The strong desire to travel all over the world.
C.The great responsibility of researching plastic.
D.The respect and admiration from other biologists.
2. What does the underlined word “envisioned” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Doubt.B.Demand.C.Advise.D.Imagine.
3. What can we know about Miller’s zero-waste grocery store?
A.It asked consumers to pay for plastic containers.
B.It went out of business because of the pandemic.
C.It provided environmental friendly delivery service.
D.It suggested people to buy less food to reduce waste.
4. Which of the following words can best describe Miller?
A.Kind and ambitious.B.Creative and determined.
C.Brave and humorousD.Optimistic and confident.

3 . A woodpecker (啄木鸟) is a type of bird with along sharp mouth. They use their mouths to make holes in trees. Usually, a strong hit to the head will normally give you a concussion (脑震荡). Woodpeckers, however, strike their mouths into trees thousands of times a day and are perfectly fine.

We used to think that the bone inside a woodpecker’s head worked as a kind of safety helmet which absorbed (吸收) the shocks. A new research by Sam Van Wassenbergh, a researcher at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, showed that this “commonsense” was in fact false. Van Wassenbergh and his colleagues argued that, if a woodpecker’s head absorbed the force, it would not be able to strike the tree with enough force. “If the mouth absorbed much of its own impact, the unfortunate bird would have to hit even harder,” they said in their paper. In other words, if the “commonsense” was true, the woodpecker would have to peck (啄) even harder to pay for both the shock-absorbing qualities of the bone inside its head as well as the concentration of the wood.

The scientists recorded four different kinds of woodpeckers in zoos as they were pecking. And the research suggested that woodpeckers don’t have any shock-absorbing device or the ability to reduce the amount of force. Although they are without “helmets”, the team said that the woodpeckers’ tiny size and weight protect them.

A woodpecker’s brain is about 700 times smaller than that of a human. “Smaller animals can deal with the damage of a sudden stop. Think about a fly that hits a window and then just flies back again,” Van Wassenbergh said. “So that is why even the hardest hits we observed are not expected to do any harm to their brains.”

1. What will happen if a woodpecker gets a strong hit on the head?
A.It will stay totally fine.B.It will get a concussion.
C.Its bone will be broken.D.Its mouth will be sharper.
2. What can we learn from the research?
A.The researchers agreed to the “commonsense.
B.The researchers recorded woodpeckers in the forest.
C.Woodpeckers are able to reduce the amount of force.
D.Woodpeckers’ small size and weight protect them well.
3. Why is “a fly” mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To support the researchers’ opinion.B.To explain the reasons for pecking
C.To describe how a fly hits a window.D.To show how small the fly brain is
4. In which part of a newspaper can wet md this text?
A.Music.B.Nature.C.Business.D.Culture.

On his way home, Tommy saw a gray, long-haired cat sitting on the sidewalk. As he stopped to pet her, he noticed that she was not wearing a collar(项圈). She rubbed her head against his hand. She reminded Tommy of Smoky, the cat he had when he was younger. Smoky’s fur had been long and gray too. Tommy petted the cat for a while. Then he said, “I have to go,” and continued to go home. To his surprise, the cat followed him on the way.

When Tommy was home, he walked up the porch(门廊)steps and went into the kitchen. The cat followed him up the steps and sat quietly outside the door, watching him closely. Tommy made a sandwich. The cat continued to stare at him. Tommy sighed. “I know it’s not a good idea to feed a stray cat(流浪猫),” he said, “but you look so hungry! I can’t sit here and eat without feeding you!”

Tommy put some turkey on a plate for the cat. As Tommy watched, she ate every piece of the turkey and then began to clean her face. “Wow!” Tommy said, “You must have been starving. I wonder how long it has been since someone fed you.”

Tommy finished his sandwich and looked at the cat. Her long fur was matted(缠结), Tommy remembered that Smoky’s brush and toys were in the storeroom. “I’m going to clean you up a little,” Tommy said to the cat. He found Smoky’s brush and got to work. As the dirt came out, the cat’s fur began to get lighter. “Hey!” Tommy said, realizing the truth. “You’re not gray—you’re white!”

After the brush, the cat climbed onto Tommy’s lap. “You’re so friendly. You probably belong to someone,” Tommy said. “I bet you’re just lost.” When Tommy’s father came home, Tommy showed him the lovely cat. “Why don’t you make some notices to put up in the neighborhood?” his father suggested.

5 . An Arizona aquarium is celebrating the hatching of three endangered African penguin chicks, saying the tiny additions are genetically (从基因方面) valuable as zoos and aquariums around the world work to ensure the species’ survival through breeding (培育) programs and conservation efforts.

Officials at OdySea Aquarium made the announcement Friday, posting video of the cute birds on social media. They hatched a few weeks ago and will remain behind the scenes with their parents until they’re ready for a public appearance.

African penguins have suffered a massive population decline over the decades and are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. So any successful hatching is cause for celebration, said Jess Peranteau, director of animal care and education at the aquarium.

“As the population of the African penguin continues to rapidly decline - down 23% in the past two years alone -OdySea Aquarium remains committed to the survival of the species in partnership with other Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” Peranteau said in a statement. The breeding program established by the association aims to build up a gene bank for the species.

Officials say two of the three new chicks in Scottsdale were born to parents Mojo and Lemieux-a power couple of sorts that was selected for pairing as part of the breeding program. The third chick was born to first-time parents Bubbles and Weasley.

Aquarium workers will regularly conduct “chick checks”, brief exams to monitor their growth and development and ensure they are hitting all necessary milestones. The three chicks have yet to be named, and their sex hasn’t yet been determined. For now they’re known by their numbers, 42, 43 and 44. In all, OdySea Aquarium now has 40 African penguins and has recorded 13 successful hatchings.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要讲述一项研究表明,气候变化的科学报道可以影响人们的思维。

6 . Science reporting on climate change does lead Americans to adopt more accurate beliefs and support government action on the issue, but these gains are fragile, a new study suggests. Researchers found that these accurate beliefs fade quickly when people are exposed to coverage skeptical of climate change.

“It is not the case that the American public does not respond to scientifically informed reporting when they are exposed to it,” said Thomas Wood, associate professor of political science at the Ohio State University. “But even truly accurate science reporting recedes from people’s frame of reference very quickly.”

Results showed that accurate science reporting didn’t persuade only politicians and people who initially rejected human-caused climate change also had their opinions shifted by reading accurate articles. The study involved 2,898 online participants who participated in four waves of the experiment during the fall of 2020.

In the first wave, they all read authentic articles in the popular media that provided information reflecting the seientifie views on climate change. In the second and third waves, they read either another scientific article, an opinion article that was skeptical of climate science, or an article on an unrelated subjeet. In the fourth wave, the participants simply were asked their beliefs about the science of climate change and their policy attitudes.

To rate participants’ scientific understanding. the researchers asked after each wave if they believed that climate change is happening and has a human cause. To measure their attitudes, researchers asked participants if they favored government action on climate change and if they favored renewable energy.

“What we found suggests that people need to hear the same accurate messages about climate change again and again. If they only hear it once, it recedes very quickly,” Wood said. It was significant that accurate reporting had positive effects on all groups, including those who originally rejected climate change. But it was even more encouraging that it affected attitudes.

1. What does the underlined word “recedes” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Increases.B.Graduates.C.Disappears.D.Strikes.
2. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.The research object.B.The research result.
C.The research purpose.D.The research procedure.
3. Why did researchers ask participants the second question?
A.To survey the government’s satisfaction rate.
B.To make an assessment on their attitudes.
C.To teach them scientific understanding.
D.To measure action on climate change.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Science Report Of Climate Change Can Affect Minds
B.Online Participants Joined In A Four-Wave Experiment
C.Accurate Science Reporting Don’t Persuade Only Politicians
D.People Should Hear Accurate Messages About Climate Change

9 . The Smithsonian National Zoo has confirmed that its six-week old giant panda is a male. The finding was announced on a zoo video earlier this week. Panda-keepers showed a painting in blue made by the baby’s father Tian Tian.

The giant panda was born on August 21. Male and female giant pandas look very similar when young, so the zoo did a genetic (基因的) test to learn whether the newborn is male or not. The panda does not yet have a name. The zoo usually waits until giant pandas are 100 days old to give them a name. At the time, the zoo said the newborn was about the size of a stick of butter-about 12 centimeters long and weighing 110 grams. Now, black accounts for (占…比例) two-thirds of his color. And he has grown quickly. He measures about 35 centimeters long and weighs about 1. 6 kilograms.

His mother Mei Xiang is much bigger, weighing about 105 kilograms. The birth was welcomed as rare and happy news during the COVID- 19 health crisis, which forced the zoo to close for several months. After Mei Xiang’s pregnancy (怀孕) was announced in August, Internet traffic on the zoo’s popular Panda live video feed increased by 1200 percent, zoo officials said. When the baby was born about a week later, traffic went so high that the video connection broke for many watchers. Zoo officials had to add bandwidth (网络带宽) as a result.

“Something like this is kind of a wonder for us,” National Zoo Director Steve Monfort said at the time, “I lifts the spirits of my team and the whole world.” For now the Panda-Camera is still the only way the public can see the pandas.

1. Why does the zoo do a genetic test on the new-born panda?
A.To check the sex of the panda.B.To learn the color of the panda.
C.To find the father of the panda.D.To record the weight of the panda.

A.He is more white in color.
B.He prefers a stick of butter.
C.He was given a name the moment he was born.
D.He is about fifteen times the weight of its birth.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了世界上盐度最高的湖——玫瑰湖,以及当地人怎样收获玫瑰湖里的盐和对它的保护。

10 . Lac Rose in Senegal about 30 kilometers northeast of Dakar, is the highest salinity(盐度) lake in the world. Much higher salinity is what gives the lake its famous pink color that changes from a slightly rose pink in the rainy season into a super bright pink during the dry season when salinity at its highest.

The high salt content draws the salt harvesters(收获者)to its banks . First, to protect their skin from the salt, they put a kind of natural vegetable fat on their bodies before entering the water. Using a wooden tool, they drag the salt into the basket made from reeds(a kind of plant). There are three different kinds of salt. There's a type of very powdery salt that is only gathered during the Harmattan when the western winds blow from the Sahara over West Africa every year. As the finest or highest grade of salt, the powdery salt is used mainly for cooking. The second type of salt is rougher and always present at the bottom of the lake. This type of salt is generally used for general cooking. Sometimes it is even used for building roads. The third type of salt is the roughest kind that people prefer for their beauty treatments. To harvest this type of salt, salt harvesters put some wood to the bottom of the lake and over time, big salt crystals(晶体)begin to form on them.

Lac Rose is considered as a world heritage site and the local people are willing to share their beauty. The healthy, natural regulation(制度)of the use of the natural resources of this lake is one of the most impressive aspects of the community surrounding this lake. There are no laws needed to protect it. Everyone takes a little bit of what they need and nothing more. There is enough for everyone in the local community. It is a good example of the power of respect and trust in local community.
