1 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Last summer, I had a life-changing experience when I decided to join a group of volunteers in rescuing homeless dogs. It all started when I read a post on social media about a group of abandoned dogs in desperate need of help. Without hesitation, 1 reached out to the organization leading the rescue mission.

Early one Saturday morning, our team gathered at a local animal shelter, armed with determination and a strong sense of purpose. We loaded the necessary supplies into our van, including food, water, blankets and leashes. As we set off, a mix of excitement and nervousness filled the air.

Our destination was a run-down area on the outskirts of town. The deserted streets were home to numerous homeless dogs, which had become victims of neglect. These innocent creatures, once someone’s beloved pets, were now struggling to survive on their own. Upon arriving, our-hearts sank at the sight of many poor dogs searching for food among the piles of garbage. It was a heartbreaking scene. We immediately sprang into action, spreading out to cover every corner of the neighborhood.

Approaching the dogs cautiously, we soon discovered that gaining their trust was not an easy task. Many had learned to fear humans after lasting unthinkable hardships It took patience, gentle words and gestures to approach them without causing distress. With’ each successful rescue, our spirits were uplifted. Some dogs willingly followed us, desperate to escape their miserable lives. Others required a bit more comfort, but eventually, we managed to lead them to safety. They received medical attention and were provided with much-needed love.

As the days went by, our team experienced both moments of joy and heartache. Some dogs were fortunate enough to find loving homes, while others faced challenges due to their extremely unpleasant pasts. But through it all, we persisted, knowing that saving every life made a difference.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。一份政府报告称,出于环保原因,英国将在19年内禁止所有新的汽油和柴油车上路。

6 . The UK will ban all new petrol and diesel-powered vehicles from its roads beginning in 19 years for environmental reasons, a government report says.

The plan aims to start removing petrol and diesel engines in 2040. It follows a similar official statement in France and comes after the British government was ordered by the High Court to develop new plans to reduce NO2 in the air. Judges ruled that previous clean-air plans were not enough to meet European Union pollution limits in the coming years.

The British government has said the poor air quality has an unnecessary and avoidable negative effect on citizens’ health, and costs up to $3.5 billion in annual lost productivity.

Part of the new plan involves an offer of $260 million to local governments to change rules where vehicle emissions (排放量) are over EU standards. Ideas so far include changing road layouts, reprogramming traffic lights and charging a fee for the oldest and most polluting cars on the road.

The plan also includes $1.3 billion for government purchase of extreme-low-emission vehicles, nearly $130 million to improve infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations and $378 million for remodeling existing vehicles.

Climate change is also a reason for the plan to get these vehicles off the road. “We can’t carry on with petrol and diesel cars,” Environment Secretary Michael Gove said. “It’s important that we all prepare for a significant change which deals not just with the problems of health caused by emissions, but the broader problems caused in terms of accelerating climate change.”

Gove added that local communities are partly responsible for coming up with ways to limit emissions, including possible limitations on commuters (上下班往返的人) and the addition of cleaner mass transportation options. Local leaders are called on to draw up “appropriate plans” to deal with climate challenges related to emissions, he said.

1. Why does the British government decide on this ban?
A.To focus on its citizens’ health.B.To promote solar energy in transport.
C.To respond to the court’s request.D.To follow in France’s footsteps.
2. Which measure may the British government take to achieve its plan?
A.Limiting the number of traffic lights.
B.Changing the way roads are arranged.
C.Spending some money on electric vehicles.
D.Removing old and high-emission vehicles.
3. What can be inferred from Gove’s words?
A.Convenient public transportation is badly needed.
B.Petrol and diesel cars may hold back economic progress.
C.Vehicle emissions are the key factor in climate change.
D.United efforts are required to achieve the plan.
4. What is the suitable title for this passage?
A.Practical ways to reduce vehicle emissions.
B.The UK plans to take petrol and diesel engines off roads.
C.The EU forces the UK to improve the poor air quality.
D.Relationship between vehicle emissions and climate change.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文,主要讲的是几位科学家对控制气候变化的论述。

7 . Several years ago, Jason Box, a scientist from Ohio, flew 31 giant rolls of white plastic to a glacier (冰川) in Greenland. He and his team spread them across 10,000 feet of ice, then left. His idea was that the white blanket would reflect back the rays of the sun, keeping the ice cool below. When he came back to check the results, he found it worked. Exposed ice had melted faster than covered ice. He had not only saved two feet of glacier in a short time. No coal plants were shut down, no jobs were lost, and nobody was taxed or fired. Just the sort of fix we’re looking for.

“Thank you, but no thank you.” says Ralph King, a climate scientist. He told Grey Childs. author and commentator, that people think technology can save the planet, “but there are other things we need to deal with, like consumption. They burned $50,000 just for the helicopter” to bring the plastic to the glacier. This experiment, quote-unquote, gives people false hope that climate change can be fixed without changing human behavior. It can’t. Technology won’t give us a free ride.

Individuals respond to climate change differently. Climatologist Kelly Smith is hardly alone in her prediction that someday soon we won’t be climate victims, we will be climate Choosers. More scientists agree with her that if the human race survives. The engineers will get smarter, the tools will get better, and one day we will control the climate. but that then? “Just the mention of us controlling the climate sent a small shiver down my back, Grey writes.” “Something sounded wrong about stopping ice by our own will,” he says.

Me? I like it better when the earth takes care of itself, I guess one day we will have to run the place, but for the moment, sitting at my desk, looking out at the trees bending wildly and the wind howling, I’m happy not to be in charge.

1. Why does the author mention Jason Box’s experiment in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce a possible solution to climate change.
B.To describe a misleading attempt to fix the climate.
C.To report on a successful experiment on saving the glacier.
D.To arouse people’s attention to the problem of global warming.
2. Which statement would Ralph King most probably agree with?
A.The fight against climate change will not succeed.
B.Technology is not the final solution, let alone its high cost.
C.It’s best to deal with climate change without changing our behavior.
D.Jason’s experiment plays a significant role in fixing climate change.
3. What is Grey Childs’s attitude to human’s controlling the climate?
A.FavorableB.TolerantC.Doubtful.D.Unclear.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.But should we fix the climate?
B.Is climate change a real problem?
C.How can we take care of the earth?
D.What if all the glaciers disappeared?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了海洋藻类、海草和红树林对于海洋生物和海洋环境非常重要,然而它们面临着很多的威胁。

8 . Sea plants like marine algae (海洋藻类), seagrass and mangroves (红树林) provide habitats for many marine creatures including shrimp, fish and other small creatures. In some way, these plants keep the steady of the environment on the bottom of the sea that might otherwise be damaged by sea waves, sunlight and other climate change.

In mankind’s view, mangroves offer a safeguard against storms such as hurricanes, protecting the inland areas where people live, especially in places like the coastlines of Florida and Louisiana.

Marine algae, seagrass and mangroves play another vital role for many marine creatures-that of a baby room. Many marine animals lay eggs in these areas because their young have a better chance of avoiding hunters while hidden in the plants.

Many animals rely on these plants as a main food source as well. Sea urchins (海胆) are just one example of some marine creatures that eat marine algae, keeping the algae from over-growth for its health. Without these vital plants, lots of marine animals would have little protection from the hunters and human activities.

Pollution and fertilizer run-off, damage from boat grounding and human-caused stresses on natural water systems are just a few types of threats that impact these weak ecosystems. The effects of the oil run-off in combination with these pre-existent conditions are difficult to predict. However, it is certain that the results will not be good for the already stressed environments that many species of marine life call home.

When exposed to the oil and the chemicals used to clean up the run-off, the sea plants themselves are directly affected. But in addition, the marine animals that depend on these plants as food and shelter are also impacted, and the rest of the food web will feel the effect.

1. What do the mangroves mean to the people in Florida?
A.Their security blankets.B.Their food sources.
C.Their hiding places.D.Their homes.
2. Why do many marine animals produce their young in the three plants?
A.To handle climate change.B.To search for food.
C.To look for room.D.To seek shelter.
3. What relationship do sea urchins and marine algae have?
A.Interdependent.B.Unfriendly.C.Cooperative.D.Competitive.
4. What may be the indirect result of the oil run-off?
A.The food web will be rebuilt.B.The sea plants will grow widely.
C.People’s health will be under threat.D.People will use chemicals to clean it up.

9 . The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards have been discovering funny and heartwarming photos of creatures being their best selves since 2015. And this year is no exception. The recently announced winners of the 2021 competition include a visibly uncomfortable monkey, a seemingly sad pigeon and a joyful bird reunion.

A group of judges sorts through thousands of submissions from expert and amateur photographers alike, and determines one winner for each of the several categories—except for the peoples’ choice award, which is left up to members of the public.

This year’s top prize goes to Ken Jensen. His photo, taken in Yunnan, China, shows a golden silk monkey in a rather uncomfortable position with an appropriately astonished look on its face.

Another crowd favorite shows a pigeon with a fly-away leaf covering its entire face, titled “I guess summer ’s over”. The shot, by John Speirs, took home the people ’s choice award.

Rahul Lakhmani won the sole video category with a video entitled “Hugging Best Friend After Lockdown.” In it, one bird lands expectantly on a branch as another dives towards it, knocking them both off the branch.

The contest is more than just a delight to behold. It also aims to raise awareness about the importance of conservation.

“In 2015, the Awards was born from the need for a wildlife photography competition that was lighthearted and importantly, could make a difference to animals and our natural world,” reads its website. “Laughter was a uniquely effective tool to engage audiences of all ages and cultures with images of creatures they may never be able to see for themselves—and that the world could lose forever.”

Nature is healing, as they say. But it still has a long way to go.

1. What can you learn about the 2021 competition?
A.The video of a monkey won the solo video category.
B.The picture featuring a pigeon won people’ s choice award.
C.A photographer from Yunnan China won the first prize.

4. What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To praise the efforts of the competition.B.To introduce winners of the 2021 competition.
