文章大意:本文是记叙文。讲述了为了保护水资源,Natassia Nicolao创立了自己的美容品牌。文章解释了她这么做的原因以及其产品的特色。

3 . The beauty industry produces many units of one-time use containers every year. More and more consumers are asking how they can keep themselves clean and beautiful without trashing the planet.

It’s a question Women of the Future winner, Natassia Nicolao, considered during her years working in product development for beauty and wellness companies. Raised by a strong and supportive mother, Natassia used her skills and passion to make a difference. In 2021, she created her waterless beauty brand.

She said, “Water is involved in every stage of a product life cycle. Everything we use, buy, sell and make has a huge water footprint. On top of that, the beauty industry adds water as the main ingredients in its products, despite it having no direct benefit to our skin.”

Having lived through water restrictions in drought-ridden Australia, Natassia felt it necessary to stop the overuse of water in the beauty industry. Natassia has always loved beauty. Her company tries to be sustainable in every step of the way, but at its core, it is about removing water from our beauty routines.

“It’s really rooted in water conservation first, and then managing your water footprint, your carbon footprint and your waste footprint,” Natassia said. “We create waterless beauty products to help conserve water.” The glass bottles and jars of her products can be recycled. The oils and wipes are formulated without any water, requiring no water to use. The company also has a piece of game-changing beauty technology: face-wipes and masks that completely dissolve in water.

“The company is still in its beginning,” Natassia said. With the prize money from Women of the Future, she plans to purchase a machine to simplify the creation of the wipes and masks. The publicity, meanwhile, will help her spread the message central to the company’s existence that beauty must do better. Natassia believes that, with a little courage and innovation, it can do.

1. What does the underlined word “trashing” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Studying.B.Damaging.C.Exploding.D.Supporting.
2. What mainly led to the birth of Natassia’s company?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了几个保护地球的活动。

4 . Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to survive! By taking part in activities like planting trees and saving energy, we can make our world a happier and healthier place.

Plant a tree

Researchers estimate roughly 15 billion trees in the world are cut down each year. So help make up that loss by planting a tree of your own. Trees absorb CO2 and produce oxygen for us to breathe. They also provide shelter and food for animals. Depending on where trees are planted, their shade can even reduce the need for air-conditioning in hotter months.     1     ?

Turn off the lights

Electricity doesn’t just happen.     2    . Although more and more electricity is made from renewable sources like wind, water and the sun, it still comes at a cost. Wind farms, big dams and solar panels take up a lot of land. But a lot of times electricity comes from fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, or natural gas, that contribute to climate change.     3    .

Limit your water usage

It might seem like water is everywhere. But the fact is that less than one percent of the water on Earth can be used by humans.     4    . Turning off the faucet (水龙头) when you brush your teeth can save up to eight gallons of water a day. To help save even more water, challenge yourself to take a shorter shower but still get clean!

    5

Start a collection campaign for recyclable items. Talk to your friends and family members about what you’re doing and ask them to help. The more people do, the better off our planet will be!

A.It is produced at a huge cost
B.Offer your time and spread the message
C.Can you share your wonderful ideas with us
D.How many more reasons do we need to go green
E.Get everyone together and reconnect with nature
F.The rest is either too salty or too difficult to access
G.Try to save energy by turning off the lights when you don’t need

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。一项新的研究预测了南亚居民在未来将经历的气候变暖带来的困难。研究发现,随着气候变暖,南亚居民面临的压力将增加很多。

5 . Residents (居民) of South Asia already regularly experience heat waves at the current level of warming. But a new study in Geophysical Research Letters projecting the amount of heat stress residents of the region (地区) will experience in the future finds with 2℃ of warming, the population’s exposure to heat stress will increase by two times.

“The future looks bad for South Asia, but the worst can be avoided by containing warming to as low as possible,” said Moetasim Ashfaq, the corresponding author of the new study. “The need for adaptation over South Asia is today, not in the future. It’s not a choice anymore.”

Earth has warmed by 1℃ since the start of the Industrial Revolution, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It may reach 1.5℃ of warming in 2040. This deadline leaves little time for South Asian countries to adapt. “Only half a degree increase from today is going to cause a widespread increase in heat events,” Ashfaq said.

People living in South Asia are especially affected by deadly heat waves because the area already experiences particularly hot summers. Almost one quarter of the world’s population lives in South Asia. Much of the population live in populated cities without regular access to air conditioning, and about 60% perform agricultural work and can’t escape the heat by staying indoors.

Controlling warming to 1.5℃ will likely cut that exposure in half, but large numbers of people across South Asia will still experience extreme temperatures. An increase in heat events that create unsafe labor conditions is likely to occur in major crop producing regions in India, such as West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Coastal regions and urban centers such as Karachi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Peshawar are also likely to be heavily affected, according to the study.

“Even at 1.5℃, South Asia will have serious consequences in terms of heat stress,” Ashfaq said. “That’s why there is a need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (排放).”

1. What does Moetasim Ashfaq stress in paragraph 2?
A.The difficulty of controlling warming.
B.The way to cut exposure to heat stress.
C.The urgency of handling climate change.
D.The bright future for South Asian countries.
2. What can be known about residents in South Asia?
A.They’ve been suffering a lot from heat.B.They’re actually poor at growing crops.
C.They generally live far from each other.D.They have easy access to air conditioning.
3. What damage will the heat waves bring to India?
A.It will harm crop production.B.It will cut down labor demand.
C.It will cause more air pollution.D.It will lead to crowding in cities.
4. What does Moetasim Ashfaq think of limiting warming to 1.5℃?
A.It is not possible at all.B.It is still far from enough.
C.It frees people from heat stress.D.It helps to improve population.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了一位名叫Klaus Littmann的艺术家在偶尔的灵感激发下在足球场打造大型森林装置艺术,以此提醒人们保护自然,爱护环境。

7 . Thirty years ago, Switzerland-based artist Klaus Littmann came across a great drawing, titled The Unending Attraction of Nature. The drawing, by Austrian artist and architect Max Peintner, displays a scene in which nature is so detached (独立的) from the environment that it becomes just a small piece, preserved for amusement. Given that we are now losing 18. 7 million acres of forests each year, Peintner’s drawing was prescient (有预见性的), to say the least.

“When I first saw the pencil drawing, I was fascinated. I knew that one day this work would be the starting point for a major art project in public space,” says Littmann.

Now, decades later, Littmann has achieved the vision with the installation (安装) of FOR FOREST: The Unending of Nature. The installation sets a native central European forest in the middle of Worthersee Football Stadium in Klagenfurt. With nearly 300 trees planted, some weighing up to six tons each, it is Austria’s largest public art installation.

In the face of climate crisis and deforestation, FOR FOREST comes with the more pressing urgency. As explained in a statement about the installation: “In support of today’s most pressing issues of climate change and deforestation, FOR FOREST aims to challenge our understanding of nature and question its future. It seeks to become a memorial, reminding us that nature, which we so often take for granted, may someday only be found in special spaces, as is already the case with animals in zoos.”

The actual creation of the man-made forest was managed by landscape architect Enzo Enea and his company, Enea Landscape Architecture. It includes many kinds of trees. Having opened on September 8, it attracts surprised and happy creatures to the field. Regretfully, the installation will close soon. In a short video about the work, Littmann says his goal was never to make something that would last forever; rather, he says, “My goal is for this picture to remain in people’s heads for a lifetime.”

1. How did Littmann get the inspiration for his later artistic creation?
A.From a video.B.Through social media.
C.From a drawing.D.Via the Internet.
2. What is the significance of the installation of FOR FOREST?
A.It offers new ways to tackle the climate crisis.
B.It warns people of environmental issues.
C.It shows the uncertainty of the future.
D.It will be Austria’s largest artistic work.
3. What can we learn about the man-made forest from the last paragraph?
A.It won’t last for a long time.
B.It was made and managed by Littmann.
C.It didn’t attract much interest.
D.It includes some special animals.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.A large painting is installed in a stadium.
B.An artist seeks to create nature-themed works.
C.A painting is used for environmental purposes.
D.An artist plants a living forest in a stadium.

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文,通过讲述一位送报员如何成功地解决郊狼偷报纸的问题,建议人们学会与生活在城市里的动物和平共处。

8 . In one San Francisco neighborhood, trouble appeared for the newspaper delivery man when his papers started going missing. He started getting calls from upset clients that their paper wasn’t being delivered, but he knew full well he had delivered one to their doorstep. Shortly after the calls began, he discovered something completely unexpected. He watched as the neighborhood coyote (郊狼) played with a newspaper on a grassy hillside. He videoed her throwing the paper in the air, sliding down the hillside on it, and running around with pages. It turns out she was repeatedly stealing papers off certain porches (门廊) shortly after he delivered them, just to play!

It’s common to hear about residents running into conflicts with urban coyotes in America. Usually it’s because of run-ins with pets, or coyotes too close around people in parks or yards. But this time the conflict arises for a more surprising reason.

Rather than getting mad, the delivery man’s solution was to throw out a paper just for her, launching it onto the grassy hillside she frequented (常出入于) before she had a chance to bite one from a front porch. She had her morning toy, and he stayed out of trouble with his clients.

I met the delivery man by chance early one morning while watching the coyote, and I listened to his story. To prove its truth — and maintain the morning ritual (惯例) — the delivery man threw a paper out on the grass. Sure enough, the coyote came running down the hill to play with it.

San Francisco’s coyotes are only just now being studied, and a small population living in the Presidio has been monitored. Many other cities also have new or ongoing studies of urban coyotes. As the clever animals become permanent residents of cities across the continent, learning more about them is a critical step in finding solutions to coexisting with them. For one newspaper man, at least, that coexistence comes at an affordable price: an extra copy of the daily newspaper.

1. What happened to the delivery man?
A.He got fewer newspaper orders.
B.He was attacked by an urban coyote.
C.He got complaints about missing papers.
D.He showed great interest in urban coyotes.
2. What do we know about the coyotes from paragraph 2?
A.They are easy to get close to.
B.They often live far from people.
C.They cause great harm to people.
D.They’ve been seen a lot around the city.
3. The author describes the delivery man’s behavior to stress ______.
A.his love for his job
B.his care for the coyote
C.his trouble brought by the coyote
D.his success in solving the problem
4. Which of the following might the author agree with?
A.We should learn to live together with animals.
B.We should drive the animals out of the city.
C.We should train and control animals.
D.We should monitor animals closely.

Different kinds of birds build different kinds of nests. Birds build nests in all sorts of places, from on the ground to high up in trees and on the sides of mountains. Some birds make nests     1     float on water in wet areas. The materials birds use to build nests depend on the     2     (surround) area.

They do not want     4     (danger) animals to see     5     their eggs are. However, if you watch     6     (close), you may be able to see birds carrying     7     (branch) and other things to build their nests with.

Most birds nest during the spring and early summer of each year. They raise their babies in quite a short time. They lay the eggs, and then keep them warm for three to four weeks. After they hatch, many young birds learn to fly in     8     little as ten days. Some birds return to the same nest year after year if they     9     (raise) their young successfully in it before.
