One of the biggest projects to deal with plastic pollution in the UK was launched on May 25. In the first Million Mile Beach Clean, around 50, 000 volunteers cleaned beaches across the UK.

The Million Miles Beach Clean     1     （continue） throughout the year. The aim is     2     （walk） 10 miles for 100, 000 volunteers each, cleaning places they love along the way. The campaign is intended to address the problem of plastic waste in the sea. It is thought that at least eight million pieces of plastic     3     （wash） into the world’s sea each day. These pollutants can take several     4     （decade） to break down.

Surfers Against Sewage, an     5     （environment） organization based in Cornwall in England, organized the project. Hugo Tagholm, head of the organization, told The Week Junior, “We’re hoping the campaign will give people the chance to reconnect     6     nature, promoting them to keep a healthy lifestyle, as well as     7     （have） a positive impact on our sea and wildlife.”

    8     Tagholm explained, the clean-up is not only focused on beaches, but on streets, in parks and along local waterways.

George,     9     11-year-old volunteer from Bristol, told The Week Junior that he’s been helping to clean up his local river. “It makes me despair to see garbage polluting the river, which is     10     I’m looking forward to getting involved in the clean, “ he said.

With    1    area of more than 397 square kilometers, Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area sits in Central China’s Hunan Province. It    2    (include) three sections: the Zhangjiajie National Forest Reserve, the Suoxi Brook area and the Tianzi Mountain area. The major topography (地形) consists of sandstone hills, gradually    3    (develop) into more than 3,103 amazing peaks, many of    4    are over 400 meters high. Between the peaks lie valleys with streams, pools and waterfalls, and some 40 caves, as well as two large natural bridges. Remote    5    the modern cities, the site is 85 percent covered with trees. The Wulingyuan is known for five    6    (wonder): splendid peaks, unique rocks, quiet valleys, still waters and deep caves. It    7    (list) as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1992. The entire area is covered with towering cliffs of sandstone and many forests which cover fantastic caves. The sandstone hills in Wulingyuan are unique in their large number. With the change of seasons and the weather, they     8     (constant) present different views to visitors. One of the     9    (high) mountains in this area is Tuerwangyue Feng or Rabbit Watching the Moon Peak, and Tianzi Mountain is particularly recommended for    10    (it) good view.

We only have nine days in Xinjiang. It’s     1     huge province, bordering eight countries and is impossible to     2     (full) explore in such a short time.

Our next stop, is Turpan—one of the world’s     3     (low) basins. The fast train from Uruqmi takes 1.5 hours     4     (reach) Turpan. It travels fast past vast wind farms in the red desert, but also oil and gas fields, a     5     ( remind) of why Xinjiang is so important to China.

In Turpan, an amazing karez(坎儿井) irrigation system has channeled water from the mountains for hundreds of years,     6     (keep) this desert oasis(绿洲) very fertile. Tourism hasn’t exactly caught on yet. When I ask to buy a bottle of the red wine     7     (produce) here, our host directs us to the local supermarket.

The boiling hot desert outside of Turpan is home     8       the remains of ancient towns long ago swallowed and kept by the sand.

As the temperature climbs to 38℃, we find Tuyoq, one of the few existing ancient villages,     9     the mud-built homes appear hidden against the sandy landscape. Only a green round roof can be seen. Outside one of the mud homes     10     (stand) a sign: “Former residence of Albert Von.”

In Winter, Arxan, a city in northern China becomes     1     world of ice. Its rivers become     2     (freeze) all except one.

Upstream of the Khalkhyn Gol River, there is a stretch around 20 kilometres in     3     (long). Even in winter, when the air temperature     4     ( general) drops to minus 40 to 30 degrees celsius, this section remains ice free. People call     5     the Unfrozen River. Its secret lies deep beneath the river bed,     6     the river passes over an area     7     (allow) the river water to stay above freezing point. Therefore, it remains ice free. During the harsh winter, it even becomes a spa for animals.

A group of cattle     8     (see) strolling along on the river bank. They can’t wait     9     (walk) through the water.     10     (look) closely and you’ll see steam rising from the surface of the river. Such a nice warm bath! Let’s leave the cattle to enjoy it!

China has     1     ( successful) launched its space station— Tianhe. The successful launch marks that China’s space station construction has entered a full stage,     2     lays a solid foundation for the follow-up tasks. The station is expected to contribute to the peaceful     3     (develop) and use of space resources as well as to enrich technologies and experience for China’s future explorations into much     4     (deep) space.

Five launch tasks     5     (finish) last year. China plans another six tasks, including two manned spaceships. The tasks aim to complete     6     construction of the space station in 2022. The station will provide astronauts     7     six zones separately for work, sleep, dining, sanitation, healthcare and exercise. The station also has more     8     (advance) technologies due to the collected wisdom and strengths from universities, research institutes and industrial departments across the country.

So far many foreign space agencies     9     (propose) cooperative intention. China will start the selection of foreign astronauts and carry out joint flights according to the task progress. Through cooperation, China wants     10     (build) its space station into a scientific research platform shared by the world and benefit all humankind.
