1 . Bumble bees (大黄蜂) play, according to new research led by Queen Mary University of London. It is the first time that object play behaviour has been shown in an insect, adding to evidence that bees may experience positive feelings.

The researchers set up numerous experiments to test this, which showed bumble bees went out of their way to roll wooden balls repeatedly despite there being no apparent motivation for doing so. The study also found that younger bees rolled more balls than older bees and that male bees rolled them for longer than their female ones.

The study followed 45 bumble bees. Individual bees rolled balls between 1 and, impressively, 117 times over the experiment. The repeated behaviour suggested that ball-rolling was rewarding. This was supported by a further experiment where another 42 bees were given access to two coloured rooms, one always containing movable balls and one without any object. When tested and given a choice between the two rooms, neither containing balls, bees showed a preference for the colour of the room previously associated with the wooden balls.

The experiments removed any idea that the bees were moving the balls for any greater purpose other than play. Rolling balls did not contribute to survival strategies and was done under stress-free conditions.

The research was based on previous experiments, which showed that bumble bees could be taught to score a goal by rolling a ball to a target in exchange for a sugary food reward. The new research showed the bees rolling balls repeatedly without being trained and without receiving any food for doing so — it was spontaneous.

Professor Lars Chittka said, “Play is thought to contribute to the healthy development and maintenance of an animal’s cognitive (认知) and motor abilities, which may make for their searching for food and is considered an important aspect of animal welfare. The finding shows insect minds are far more complex than we expect. We need to do all we can to protect insects.”

1. What do we know about female bumble bees compared with male ones?
A.They rolled far more balls.
B.They spent less time playing rolls.
C.They had bigger motivation to roll balls.
D.They preferred to play in the colorful rooms.
2. Why did the researchers choose balls for bumble bees?
A.Rolling balls is what bumble bees are expert in.
B.Rolling balls helps reduce bumble bees’ pressure.
C.Rolling balls develops bumble bees’ survival skills.
D.Rolling balls is done without any purpose for bumble bees.
3. What does the underlined word “spontaneous” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Voluntary.B.Rewarding.C.Forced.D.Conscious
4. What can we infer according to Lars’ words?
A.Play makes a difference to animals’ life.B.Humans find it hard to figure out insect minds.
C.Many insects are faced with dying out.D.Play can ensure insects to find food successfully.

Last Sunday, I adopted the baby dog from an animal shelter. I was impressed by its lovely appearance for the first time I saw it. I brought it home but decided to build a warm home for it. Due to my tight budget, I had to make a cage for it by me. First, I watched various video relevant to making cages. Then I reach the market to buy the materials. After that, I had the materials tying together with strings. About three hours later, the cage set up. I put the dog into the cage. It wagged its tail happy. Although the cage looked strange, I felt satisfying with what I had done.

文章大意:本文是应用文。文章主要介绍一些与孩子们一起进行绿色旅行的小贴士。

3 . Tips for Green Travel with Kids

Travelling doesn’t mean letting go of all the eco-friendly choices we work so hard to achieve in our daily life. Here are a few tips for green travel with kids.

Booking nonstop flights whenever possible will reduce carbon emissions (碳排放). If the closest local airport doesn’t have nonstop flights to a certain place, check with other local airports to see if nonstop flights are available.     1

It’s easy when travelling to pull in to fast food restaurants for snacks.     2     My kids love to help plan snacks. I let them create their own snacks for the trip at home.

3     At the airport, keep your reusable bottles empty until you have passed through the security (机场安检区). Fill them up on the other side of the security checkpoint. Single-use plastic water bottles create unnecessary waste and the plastic can be harmful to your health.

4     In addition, opening a few windows and turning off the air conditioner (空调) are also good ways to save energy. You should also help your children keep their good, green habits while travelling. Sometimes vacation can mean more than one shower each day-once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool. Pay attention to the number of showers (淋浴) and the length of showers.     5

A.Walking is good for your health.
B.Try to cut back to save water and energy.
C.But you can pack healthy food from home.
D.Travelling is a great chance to introduce your kids to the world.
E.Reusable water bottles are easy to bring along wherever you travel.
F.Save energy by turning off the hotel room lights when you head out for the day.
G.You might have to drive a bit farther, but saving on carbon emissions makes it worthwhile.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了塑料吸管对环境的危害、解决方法和可能的环保型替代产品。

7 . Plastic straws (吸管) have been a major problem in global discussions of environmental damage. Maybe because of their small size, the production cost of straws is low. In many countries, straws are offered freely after buying soft drinks. Therefore, plastic straws are one of the most used plastics and pollutants in the world.

The plastic straw is light and small. Due to their small size, plastic straws are often eaten by sea animals. Environmentalists have shown that the death of many sea animals is caused by eating plastic straws. The other damaging characteristic of plastic straws is that they are made of materials which cannot degrade. That means the materials cannot be changed into small harmless (无害的) ones.

The most effective way of dealing with the environmental pollution caused by plastic straws is the reuse or banning (禁止) the use of plastic straws. Being plastics, the straws can be made new items. Many organizations around the world change used straws into new products. In Africa, local communities collect used plastic straws and use them to make mats and bags. Another way of dealing with environmental pollution caused by plastic straws is placing a ban on their production and use. Experts advise governments to ban using plastic straws to save the environment. A few countries in the world such as Rwanda, Macedonia, China, Kenya have already banned the use of plastic bags and are expected to include plastic straws and bottles. But it will be a long way to do this effectively.

There are few environmentally friendly and biodegradable productions to take the place of plastic straws. These productions include paper straws, bamboo straws. However, such straws are usually expensive as their production cost is high. It’s still a question whether they can entirely take the place of plastic straws.

1. Why can people be free to use plastic straws?
A.They are very cheap.B.They are light and small.
C.They are dangerous.D.They are easy to use.
2. What does the underlined word “due to” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Cut up.B.Because of.C.Go on.D.Break out.
3. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.It’s not difficult to ban using plastic straws.
B.Many countries have stopped using plastic straws.
C.Experts advise people to stop producing plastic straws.
D.Some Africans change plastic straws into new products.
4. What does the author think of environmentally friendly straws?
A.It is a must to use them.
B.It’s not easy to reuse them.
C.There are still some problems to be solved.
D.There are some other kinds of cheaper straws.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何利用双筒望远镜来对天空进行观察。

9 . Does the night sky excite you? Astronomy can be a (most) wonderful pastime activity. There are many things to learn for fun, and a chance to discover something new. In fact, some amateur astronomers have made great discoveries just with their eyes or binoculars (双筒望远镜).

Beginners to astronomy should shy away from buying telescopes until they’ve watched the universe through binoculars. These simple instruments help beginners get used to seeing the view through a more powerful instrument than the naked eye. With a telescope, not only are the pictures upside down, but they are usually greatly magnified (放大): much bigger than the normal size. Thus, it’s best to test your skills first with binoculars.

A good pair of binoculars opens a completely new world that can’t be seen with the naked eye. In our solar system alone, binoculars can show craters (坑,环形山) on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, states of Venus, four bright moons of Jupiter, all the planets except Pluto, small planets, and comets with tails.

We can see many more stars when using binoculars. There are hundreds of stars that we can see with binoculars. These stars often change in brightness, and they are interesting to watch. And many star clusters (群) and galaxies can be seen.
