Electric vehicles (EVs) are a strong weapon in the world’s efforts     1     global warming, But the effects of EVs depend on which country you are in, new research shows.

The researchers compared gas emissions (排放) caused by charging an EV to drive 100 kilometers with the emissions     2     (come) from an average gasoline car driven the same     3     ( distant).

Countries     4     charging an electric vehicle is     5     (clean) than driving a gasoline-powered car use a lot of hydroelectric (水电), nuclear or solar power. Data suggests that an electric vehicle in Poland actually     6     (create) more carbon emissions because its electric system depends so much on coal. In other European countries, however, EVs result in reduced emissions.

Germany creates a lot of electricity from the sun and wind. But they do not add to the electricity system     7     (equal) throughout the day. For this reason, the amount of carbon emissions saved by driving an EV depends on the time of day when it     8     (charge). Charging in the afternoon, when there is more sun and wind, saves 16 to 18 percent more carbon than at night when electricity systems are more likely     9     (use) gas or coal.

The gap in emissions between electric and gasoline powered vehicles has narrowed in recent years. In Europe, carmakers have been required to meet EU carbon reduction standards. They have made their gasoline engines more fuel-efficient. As     10     result, the carbon emissions of new gasoline-powered cars in Europe fell by an average of 25 percent between 2006 and 2016.

Hello everyone! I've just came back from a wonderful trip to Tibet. It's such beautiful that I seemed to be taken into a fairyland(仙境). The scenery is so impressive or the air is so bright and clean. Visitors are being told to pay attention to protect the environment. Therefore, this beautiful countryside is being spoiled by careless visitors. Cans, plastic bags and paper is being thrown away by many tour groups as they pass through Tibet. I am worrying about the effect this will have the local wildlife. How can we make the visitors more aware(意识到)of who is being done to the environment? We should all to think about this.

3 . Nowadays, taking no notice of protecting the environment leads to problems including global warming. While discussing with my daughter about going green, I remembered the daily practices in most households in India. What we did was actually helping our environment and also protecting our resources. We did all this naturally, without even realizing its importance.

We preferred reusing pens in the past. We used to have ball pens used again and again by changing the refills and we also used ink pens, which were refreshed now and then by filling ink in them when required. There was no such thing as a use-and-throw pen. We loved the process of cleaning the writing instruments. However, today, plastic pens that do not last long are ruling the stationery(文具)shops.

We recycled and reused newspapers without really thinking twice about it. Newspapers were kept carefully during those days because they were an important material used for packing and storing. Today plastic bags have become important, All these materials pollute our land and water and prevent all conservation(保护)efforts.

Public transport was a common thing in the old days and it was so much fun. Nowadays.no one seems to have the patience to take public transport and many consider it too silly for them. So people take their cars out every day and pollute the environment, thinking it makes the m look cool. Vehicular (车辆的) pollution in cities is the biggest contributor to environmental problems.

I am not against the usage of modern technologies. In fact, it has helped make our life casier. While we can use the same technology to go green instead of polluting the environment, we should also go back to a few old traditions that are ecofriendly.

4 . Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.

Though unwilling to evacuate from a hurricane, on September 15,my family was forced to leave our home for my grandfather's house several miles away. We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm.

Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left. We got him back inside. I had never seen him so scared. Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.

The leak had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the photos. I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.

The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family weathered the storm, though the same could not be said for the house. Only the wooden beams remained, but inside many of his things were safe. My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.

It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed. We discussed the rebuilding of the house. Under the beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.

1. Why do the people store full gas cans and bottled water?
A.To save much money.B.To watch a hurricane easily.
C.To protect their houses well.D.To be prepared for hurricanes.
2. How did the author's grandfather feel during the hurricane?

3. What does the underlined word "weathered" in paragraph 5 mean?

C.Came safely through.D.Suffered seriously from.

6 . Growing up in Sydney’ s Sutherland Shire, Damian Ogden’s house was right on the border of Australia’s first national park, which is where he’ d spend his weekends. At 12 years old, Damian got involved in his first campaign to protect his backyard.

There was also a nuclear reactor 3 km from his place. As a kid, he didn't think much about the iodine tablets the school kept on hand‘in case of emergency’. Then Chernobyl happened, and that changed everything.

Damian’ s family actually got to know some of the victims of that nuclear disaster when they came to Australia. So when a second reactor was to be built at nearby Lucas Heights, he stood side-by-side with the community to oppose it. Although the campaign was lost ,Damian had found his path.

Later Damian would go to university and became active in the student movement. After that, and for the next decade, he stood up for the rights of tens of thousands of Australians through the union movement. It was there that Damian learned to organize in difficult circumstances — skills that he would take with him as he travelled to America to work on both the 2008 and 2012 Obama campaigns.

Towards the end of the second election campaign, he remembers having a phone link-up with the President. Most of the people gathered around had been on the journey since his first election campaign. “During that phone call ,President Obama talked emotionally about his best legacy being the leaders that would go on to do great things because of what they’d learned on that campaign.”

Inspired by these election campaigns, in 2012,Damian founded an organization where he taught other organizations how to campaign and be a community organizer.

Then, the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work at The Wilderness Society came up, with the chance to build a national movement building strategy.

Damian had wanted to make a difference to the environment since he was a 12-year-old kid in the Sutherland Shire — and now, he’ s finally here, doing just that.

7 . India and China are leading the global greening effort, a latest NASA study said on Monday, observing that the world is a greener place than it was 20 years ago.

Data from NASA Earth satellites show that human activities in China and India play an important part in this greening of the planet, thanks to tree planting and agriculture. The effect comes mostly from tree-planting programs in China and agriculture in both countries. “China and India account for one-third of the greening,’’ said lead author Chi Chen of Boston University.

China alone accounts for 25 percent of the global increase in leaf area with only 6.6 percent of global green area. The greening in China is from forests and croplands (农田), but in India, it is mostly from croplands with minor contribution from forests. China’s huge contribution to the global greening trend comes in large part from its programs to protect and expand forests.

“When the greening of the earth was first observed, we thought it was due to a warmer, wetter climate from the added carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Now with the data, we see that humans are also contributing,” said Rama Nemani, research scientist at NASA. “Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to fix it. In the 1970s and 80s in India and China, the situation around vegetation (植被) loss was not good. In the 1990s, people realized it, and today things have improved. That’s what we see in the satellite data,” added Nemani.

Land area used to grow crops is comparable in China and India, and has not changed much since the early 2000s. Yet these places have greatly increased both their green leaf area and their food production by enhancing the way of cropping. This was achieved through multiple cropping practices, where a field is replanted to produce another harvest several times a year. Production of grains, vegetables, fruits and more has increased by about 35%〜40% since 2000 to feed their large populations.

1. In India, the greening mainly comes from       .
A.agriculture.B.tree planting.C.forests and croplands.D.a warmer and wetter climate.
2. What do Nemani’s words mainly suggest?
A.Carbon dioxide causes global warming.
B.Man can actively change the environment.
C.In India and China, vegetation loss has been solved.
D.Climate has little to do with the greening of the earth.
3. What does the underlined word “enhancing” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Praising.B.Ignoring.C.Improving.D.Limiting.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.India and China lead the global greening.
B.Human activities change the global climate.
C.Warmer climate contributes to the global greening.
D.Land area for crops in China and India has changed much.
