文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。与阿拉斯加、加拿大和西伯利亚的森林大火使气候变暖的假设相反,科学家们发现,在被烧毁的树木允许更多的雪将更多的阳光反射到太空的地区,可能会出现降温。

2 . Against the supposition that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia warm the climate, scientists have discovered that cooling may occur in areas where burnt trees allow more snow to mirror more sunlight into space.

This finding suggests that taking steps to prevent northern forest fires to limit the release of greenhouse gases may warm the climate in northern regions. Usually large fires destroyed forests in these areas over the past decade. Scientists predict that with climate warming, fires may occur more frequently over next several centuries as a result of a longer fire season. Sunlight taken in by the earth tends to cause warming, while heat mirrored back into space tends to give rise to cooling.

This is the first study to analyze all aspects of how northern fires influence climate. Earlier studies by other scientists have suggested that fires in northern regions speed up climate warming because greenhouse gases from burning trees and plants are released into the atmosphere and thus trap heat.

Scientists found that right after the fire, large amounts of greenhouse gases entered the atmosphere and caused warming. Ozone(臭氧) levels increased, and ash from the fire fell on far-off sea ice, darkening the surface and causing more radiation from the sun to be taken in. The following spring, however, the land within the area of the fire was brighter than before the fire, because fewer trees covered the ground. Snow on the ground mirrored more sunlight back into space, leading to cooling.

“We need to find out all possible ways to reduce the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.” Scientists tracked the change in amount of radiation entering and leaving the climate system as a consequence of the fire, and found a measurement closely related to the global air temperature. Typically, fire in northern regions occurs in the same area every 80 to 150 years. Scientists, however, found that when fire occurs more frequently, more radiation is lost from the earth and cooling results. Specifically, they determined when fire returns 20 years earlier than predicated, 0.5 watts per square meter of area burned are soaked up by the earth from greenhouse gases, but 0.9 watts per square meter will be sent back into space. The net effect is cooling. Watts are used to measure the rate at which energy is gained or lost from the earth.

1. According to the new findings, the prevention of northern forest fires may _______.
A.lead to a longer fire seasonB.result in a warming climate
C.conserve the environment thereD.cause frequent forest fires
2. Earlier studies about northern forest fires _______.
A.suggest that the fires will quicken climate warming
B.indicate that forest fires will pollute the atmosphere
C.analyze over-all aspects of how northern fires influence climate
D.reveal that measures should be taken to protect the environment
3. The underlined phrase “soaked up” in the last paragraph most probably means _______.
A.releasedB.absorbed
C.reflectedD.distributed
4. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that forest fires in Alaska, Canada and Siberia may _______.
A.warm the climate as the supposition goes
B.help to gain more energy rather than release more energy
C.destroy large areas of forests and pollute the far-off sea ice
D.reflect more sunlight into space and thus cool the climate

3 . Plastic pollution is disastrous for the environment and our health, and the issue is growing worse. Even when plastic producers are responsible and attempt to help relieve the problem, it doesn’t always go smoothly. Such has been the case for the company Torus Pak.

Torus Pak produces packaging for frozen meals. Last year, a Torus Pak customer contacted the company about ensuring the packages are recyclable. Like many other black plastic products, the Torus Pak packages were technically recyclable to begin with, but they used a carbon-based pigment (色素). This pigment disturbs the sorting technology that’s used by many recycling facilities, so black plastic usually ends up being thrown away because the machines can’t identify it.

A 2017 study found that only about 9% of all the plastic waste humans have ever created has actually been recycled. That amounts to less than 600 million tons out of over 6 billion. Some studies estimate that by 2050, the plastic polluting the ocean will outweigh the fish if we don’t make some changes. This would obviously be bad for fish, but also for anyone who eats seafood. If you eat something that eats plastic, it will end up in your own system. That’s bad enough, but what’s worse, producing plastic also releases emissions that contribute to climate change, and harmful chemicals that can sicken communities near plastic-related facilities.

The solution is obvious — stop using so much plastic, starting with many of the items we use just once for a few minutes. Companies also need to shift toward using more reusable containers, and packaging made from materials that are less harmful to the environment instead of plastic. Besides, governments must take an active part to direct such changes too.

We know how to live without plastic. We’ve just got used to a convenient consumption (消费) culture. The benefits of using plastic on such an unnecessarily large scale don’t outweigh these costs. Reducing our dependence on plastic will help to keep our planet clean and healthy.

1. Why can’t Torus Pak’s packaging be recycled?
A.Because it doesn’t care about environment pollution.
B.Because plastic is not a recyclable material.
C.Because recycling technology still has some problems.
D.Because colored packaging is hard to be identified.
2. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Plastic is produced faster than it is recycled.
B.The most harmful pollution is plastic waste.
C.Ocean plastic pollution is limited to sea lives.
D.Plastic gives out emissions to pollute air.
3. What’s the author’s suggestion for solving the plastic pollution?
A.Forbid plastic production.
B.Avoid unnecessary plastic use.
C.Produce less containers.
D.Wait for governments’ actions.
4. In the author’s opinion, what is the main cause for heavy plastic pollution?
A.Low cost in producing plastic.
B.Failure in plastic recycling.
C.Governments’ being irresponsible.
D.People’s consumption habit.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了人造树对环境没有好处,解释了砍伐真圣诞树不会对环境有影响。

4 . We often think that buying an artificial tree instead of a real one for Christmas will help the environment by not cutting down trees. However, this argument doesn’t consider the process of producing and disposing of the trees, during which a lot of CO2, emissions are being let off into the air. Actually, increased demand(需求)for real trees is helping the environment.

Artificial trees, when created, give out an average of 40kg of CO2. To harvest a real Christmas tree, very little CO2 emissions are caused. If left to biodegrade (生物降解), a real tree will return to the earth in one to two years depending on conditions. An artificial tree, however, will take hundreds of years to degrade, letting out more pollutants into the air. Further, even if an artificial tree is recycled, the process will continue to produce even more CO2.

Real trees do not have these problems. They can have positive effects on our health. When they are near a window and regularly watered, they will produce clean oxygen which can improve health.

Undoubtedly, cutting down trees is bad for the environment, so what makes cutting down Christmas trees any different? Christmas trees have specific farms where they are harvested, meaning that protected forests aren’t cut down, and, with every tree harvested a new one is planted. The trees aren’t harvested until they are between 10 and 12 years old and the farms always have trees growing while they’ re harvesting this year’s trees.

If you have already used an artificial tree, the best thing you can do is to keep using it year over year to save it from going to landfill.

1. What does the Paragraph 1 say about artificial trees?
A.The process of producing them is difficult.B.The demand for them is on the increase.
C.They help fight againstCO2 emissions.D.They do no good to the environment.
2. How is Paragraph 2 organized?
A.By listing data.B.By explaining different views.
C.By making comparisons.D.By giving examples.
3. What do we know about the real Christmas trees from the passage?
A.They have a bad effect on the environment.B.Cutting them down almost causes no harm.
C.They are harvested from protected forests.D.Harvesting them needs great efforts.
4. What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To inform us of the function of real Christmas trees.
B.To tell us the benefit of not keeping a Christmas tree.
C.To show artificial trees have less value than real trees.
D.To explain why real Christmas trees are environmentally-friendly.
