1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Donald Crouch first encountered Jim in his English class in rural Michigan, he saw an unhappy boy, who’d gone deep into a cocoon (茧) of silence.

Donald might have assumed that Jim was bored or uninterested or even backward. Certainly, he appeared to be all of those things.

But there was something in the young boy that lit up whenever the subject turned to poetry. It was unnoticeable, but Donald could see a shift in the boy ‘s attitude--a quiet but unmistakable enthusiasm that accompanied any discussion of Chaucer, Shakespeare, or Tennyson. A twinkle in his eyes would appear whenever Donald lectured on matters of English verse, something which proved to be most appealing to the otherwise disappointed teacher. Although Jim was interested in all manners of poetry, he seemed particularly excited when Donald would discuss Walt Whitman, that greatest of American poets.

One day Donald kept Jim after school and learned that Jim stuttered ( 口吃). Donald understood that Jim had accepted the written word because the spoken word had escaped him. The next day, Donald told the pupils to write a poem. Jim turned his assignment in, and Donald was surprised by how good it was.

The teacher read the assignment over and over again in disbelief and, truth be told, with a little bit of envy; how could a student from the middle of nowhere come up with something like this? He turned his head once again to the boy and began to have an idea.

Donald had noticed earlier that Jim’s stutter disappeared whenever he quoted his favorite poets out loud .

文章大意:本文是议论文。文章主要介绍了终身教育的好处和推广终身教育的重要性。

2 . Definitions of adult learning vary, but it is usually defined as all forms of learning undertaken by adults after having left initial education and training, however far this process may have gone.

Education and training are important factors for achieving the strategy objectives of raising economic growth, competitiveness and social inclusion. However, with some exceptions, the process of implementing education and training remains weak. Most education and training systems are still largely focused on the education and training of young people and limited progress has been made in changing systems to mirror the need for learning throughout the lifespan.

An additional 4 million adults would need to participate in lifelong learning. Recent research confirms the importance of investing in adult learning. The research on adults indicates that those who engage in learning are healthier, with a consequent reduction in healthcare costs.

The big economic challenge in Europe is to raise its growth and employment performance while preserving social cohesion(凝聚力). The rapid progress in other regions of the world shows the importance of creative, advanced and quality education and training as key factors of economic competitiveness. General levels of competence must increase, both to meet the needs of the labour market and to allow citizens to function well in today's society.

Europe is facing big demographic(人口的) changes that will have a major impact on society and on the economy and consequently on education and training provision and needs. Over the next 30 years, the number of younger Europeans will fall by 15%. One in three Europeans will be over 60 years old, and about one in ten will be over 80.

Given the challenges identified above, raising the overall level of skills of the adult population by offering more and better learning opportunities throughout adult life is important for both efficiency and equity reasons. Not only does lifelong learning help make adults more efficient workers and more active citizens, it also contributes to their personal well-being.

1. Which can replace the underlined word “implementing” in paragraph 2?
A.Carrying out.
B.Taking in.
C.Knowing about.
D.Looking over.
2. What can we learn from the research?
A.Adults have reduced healthcare costs.
B.Learning is good for adults’ health.
C.Few adults need to receive learning.
D.More research will focus on learning.
3. What problem does Europe face according to the text?
A.Europeans are not healthy.
B.Many old Europeans have died.
C.The European population is aging.
D.Young Europeans are out of work.
4. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph?

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道,介绍了英国首相Boris Johnson支持延长上学时间的计划,针对这项计划,教育界人士议论纷纷,有人持肯定态度,有人则认为这一计划可能会适得其反。

3 . Boris Johnson has said extending the school day is “the right thing to do” and the government is examining how extra hours could be used for additional tuition and activities. In his strongest commitment yet to imposing the extra hours, the prime minister also criticized the work of the former education recovery chief, Sir Kevan Collins, telling ministers that their catch-up schooling plan was not ambitious enough.

Collins once recommended spending about £ 15 bn on education recovery, including extending the school day by 30 minutes. Government officials said the plan was praiseworthy in some aspects. But they also suggested further cash for education catch-up at the autumn spending review, due to the objection that the plan already announced left much to be desired.

Speaking to the education committee chair, Robert Half on, Johnson said: “We’re looking at the evidence, and if Fm absolutely frank with you and the committee, to begin with some of the evidence that was assembled was not as good as it could have been.” The evidence on lengthening the school day wasn’t as powerful as it was on tuition, for instance, but that doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do. I do think it’s the right thing to do. Question is how you do it. What sorts of activities do you need? Are they academic? As you rightly say, we’re doing a proper review of all of that to get the evidence that we want. Halfon said he was encouraged by the comments. “We need radical thinking and radical action to tackle the disaster which has befallen children in the last 18 months” he told the Guardian, “If the government is seriously looking at a longer school day as the PM has suggested, that is encouraging.”

Teachers’ unions had warned that plans to extend schooling hours could backfire. Geoff Barton, the general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: ”We know that quality of teaching is more important than quantity. It will be vital that these proposals are properly resourced and don’t become an unsustainable burden on schools, leaders and teachers. And there will be many questions about exactly what the expectation will be over the content of longer school days.”

1. What did the government officials think of the plan already announced?
A.It was a good try but limited itself.
B.It was well-designed but poorly conducted.
C.It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.
D.It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.
2. What is Robert Halfon’s attitude toward expanding the school day?
A.Favorable.B.Opposed.
C.Indifferent.D.Ambiguous.
3. Which of the following could be known from the passage?
A.The public has no expectation of the content of longer school days.
B.Quality of teaching should be attached more importance to than quantity.
C.All the work of the former education recovery chief fails to gain affirmation.
D.There are enough powerful evidences to confirm extending the school day is meaningful.
4. What does the text mainly intend to tell us?
A.Extending the school day is proved to be right to do.
B.All are pulling together to tackle the education problem.
C.Experts are investigating the ways to extend the school day.
D.There are both pros and cons to extending the school day.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍如何养成好习惯的方法。

4 . Our lives are full of habits. Unfortunately a great many of them are bad habits. One way to break these bad habits is to fill our lives with good habits. Most people decide one day that they need to make changes to their lives and then they go all out to make big sweeping changes. This may work for them for the first few days, but then they get burned out.     1     This is a very unproductive way to spend your time and energy.

2     Say your goal is to get up an hour earlier every day. One day you start setting your alarm for an hour earlier and you keep this up for one week. Then because you are naturally resistant to change, you go back to your old habit. A better way is to set your alarm one minute earlier every day. After two months you are getting up an hour earlier and you will not even notice the change.     3

This approach can work for just about anything. If you are exercising for half an hour every day and you want to increase that time to one hour then add a minute every day. After one month you will have reached your goal with very little resistance from your body and mind.     4

This method of change is gentle, but very powerful. Think of everything you can accomplish if you just continuously improve a little at a time. The change itself creates the momentum (动力) you need to keep going.     5     What one minute change can you make to your life today?

A.The key is to change a little bit at a time.
B.Keeping on exercising can build up strength.
C.It may take longer, but with this approach you are likely to succeed.
D.Nothing will happen if you are not determined to achieve your goal.
E.Pretty soon they are back to their old habits and nothing has changed.
F.Changing slowly removes the greatest barrier we have to change: fear.
G.Soon you will find yourself reaching your goals with almost no pain involved.

6 . According to some researchers, you should not praise children for everything that they do. It does not help them build self-confidence.

Most parents and teachers agree that praise can help increase children’s self-confidence — the more, the better. However, according to some researchers, only proper praise is good for children. If adults praise everything children do, it makes children look for praise all the time, not trying to do their best. “Teachers should not say things like ‘good job’ or ‘nice work’ whenever a child does anything. They should encourage them to continue to improve,” some researchers advise.

Another idea is that children with high self-confidence are happier, and do better at school. About this, Marshall Duke, a researcher in children, says, “High self-confidence brought in by too much praise does not make children happier, get more, or become able to do more. Finding a child’s advantages and developing them can help build confidence more than too much praise can.” Praise also loses its effect if it is given equally to all students.

“It’s important to tell children the truth about what they’ve done. Honest feedback (反馈意见) is far better than empty praise,” Duke adds. “People have got into the habit of not telling children when they’re wrong. That makes it hard for them to deal with difficulties when they grow up. That’s just how the world is.”

1. According to some researchers, if parents praise their children too much, their children will________.
A.become strongB.increase self-confidence
C.do better in their studiesD.always look for praise
2. Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage?
A.Praise makes children become successful.
B.The same praise for all children has no meaning.
C.Children don’t know what they’re really good at.
D.Duke thinks praise is more important than finding children’s strengths.
3. What is the last paragraph about?
A.What children with high self-confidence are like.
B.It’s important to have the habit of praising children.
C.Children should know their mistakes as soon as possible.
D.We should praise children honestly and tell them their mistakes.

7 . Putting children in daycare helps working parents take their minds off childcare.     1

How daycare negatively affects children is related to many factors. One study has shown that children who are shy have a higher level of the hormone cortisol which is released when an individual shows signs of stress.     2    And as a result the child may not mix well with others at the daycare center, a situation that can cause stress.

Another negative impact of daycare is that there is less communication between a mother and her child.     3    So it is essential for a child to develop a deep bond with his or her mother, since this will lay the foundation for all the relationships he or she will form later on in life. Children who spend a lot of time with their mothers’ experience healthier social and emotional development.

Children in daycare centers also feel unprotected compared to children at home. In a daycare center, when one caregiver attends to more than one child at the same time, she may not be able to look deeply into why a child is mixing well or not.     4

5     Well-maintained daycare centers contribute a great deal to the overall development of a child by providing a structured environment. Children become more social by interacting with other children of the same age, and learn new activities that are not always available if they are brought up only at home.

A.But daycare has its disadvantages.
B.Look for a well-maintained daycare center.
C.However, the advantages of daycare cannot be ignored.
D.This is because a shy child won’t open up freely in public.
E.Babies become extremely attached to their primary caregivers.
F.In such cases, a child may become either completely quiet or aggressive.
G.Mothers need cut the time in daycare centers and accompany children more often.

9 . Disappointment is a natural human emotion that occurs after a failure. For our young children, this failure can look like not getting the toy they wanted, not being invited to a classmate’s birthday party or losing their favourite stuffed animal.

It is essential for children’s mental health, well-being and overall development that they experience how to deal with disappointment well. But this can be difficult for parents to handle, particularly around holidays that have grown to involve gift-giving and expectations.

North American culture often mistakenly links love and happiness with material goods such as toys; the Santa story promises magical wish fulfillment. This can cause conflict for parents when children do not get the “right” gift.

On holidays, there’s social and personal pressure to provide happiness and joy to children through material objects, which can be confused with providing the necessities. For parents who do not have the resources to provide the perfect or desired gift, this can cause additional stress, shame, guilt and fear around disappointment. Parents may feel as though they have let down their child and that they have impacted the child’s experience or memory of their “special day”.

This is especially true if the child has difficulty with or is learning to regulate emotions and expresses disappointment through tantrums (发怒) or sulking (生闷气). These behaviours can affect parents profoundly, often leading them to feel badly about themselves or that the child does not love them.

Changing our focus from giving rather than receiving can help our children develop and appreciate the strength in gratitude. Research has linked gratitude to significant health and wellness benefits such as improving self-esteem, improving sleep and developing empathy.

The other thing to know is that although disappointment feels awful, it is a part of life and is actually a positive and healthy emotion that’s central to children’s emotional, cognitive and social development throughout their lives.

1. Why is it difficult for parent to handle disappointment on Christmas?
A.It is connected with children’s overall development.
B.It is the custom to give gifts or show expectations.
C.Children are easy to have tantrums or sulking.
D.Children often expect too much of their parents.
2. What is the author’s attitude toward linking love and happiness with material goods?
A.Positive.B.Concerned.C.Interested.D.Supportive.
3. What does the author feel about changing our focus to giving rather than receiving?
A.It can avoid disappointment in life.
B.It can help children’s academic development.
C.It is a necessary part of one’s life.
D.lt helps children realize the benefits of being grateful.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.What Christmas Can Teach Kids about Disappointment
B.How We Can Meet Our Children’s Expectations Best
C.What Harm Disappointment Does to Most Children
D.What Are the Rights to Give to Your Children on Christmas

10 . Mothers who angrily tell off their children when they step out of line may be making behavior problems worse, according to a study. The study by the London School of Economics (LSE) found that too much shouting and giving severe punishments were producing an opposite result. Ignoring naughty children also appeared to lead to a decrease in discipline standards.

Researchers said that “reasoning with children” was more likely to have a positive impact on their behavior at a young age. But the study warned that it was difficult to determine a direct link between one parenting style and its outcomes because of the effect of other causes.

The latest study was based on an analysis of almost 19, 000 children. Data was collected from parents just before their children’s first birthdays, and then when they turned three, five and seven. The study, led by Dr Laure De Preux, assessed the impact of various parenting styles on children.

Researchers said,“Particularly excessive (过度的) shouting, punishing or ignoring a naughty child increases his behavior problems, and only reasoning doesn’t negatively impact the child’s behavior.”

But the study also showed that a large number of other things such as economic conditions also impacted on children’s development. The result suggested that wealthier families were able to create a whole environment that clearly benefited the child beyond simple effect of parenting. It said children in poor households in particular were affected by their mother’s parenting styles.

“In this group, behavior problems are reduced when mothers read to the naughty children, and increased when mothers shout at them, take treats away, or ignore them,” it said.

It is the latest in a line of recent studies to assess the link between parenting and children’s behavior.

Two years ago, a report commissioned (委托) by the Department for Education found that severe and inconsistent discipline in the home was bringing up a generation of young children with anger management problems, poor attention and low levels of learning ability.

B.Why many children had behavior problems.
C.How parenting styles affected children's development.
D.Why parents gave their children severe punishments.
4. What do we learn about the report in the last paragraph?
