1 . Every Saturday night, all through that lazy spring, I used to take a rose to Miss Caroline Wellford. Every Saturday night, rain or shine, at exactly eight o’clock.
Miss Caroline was abandoned by her future husband Jeffrey Pinniman, who married Christine Marlowe, a younger and prettier girl. It almost became a scandal (丑闻) in our town. Miss Caroline could hear unkind things about her everywhere she went. For six months she had shut herself up in her house and seemed determined to turn herself into an odd old maid. She looked like a ghost that night when I delivered the first rose. “Hello, Jimmy,” she said listlessly (无精打采地). When I handed her the box, she looked shocked — “For me?”
Again the next Saturday, at exactly the same time, I found myself delivering another rose to Miss Caroline. The third time she opened the door so quickly that I knew she must have been waiting. There was a little color in her cheeks and her hair no longer looked so straggly (散乱地).
The morning after my fourth trip to her house, Miss Caroline played the organ again in church. She held her head high with the rose pinned to her blouse. Week after week I delivered the rose, and gradually Miss Caroline returned her normal life.
When I made my final trip to Miss Caroline’s house, I said, as I handed her the box, “This is the last time I’ll bring this, Miss Caroline.” She hesitated and invited me to come in and handed me a model of a sailing ship, exquisitely (精巧地) carved. She said. “I’d like you to have it. You’ve brought me great happiness, Jimmy — you and your roses.”
Fleeing back to the shop, I looked in the file where Mr. Olsen kept his untidy records, and I found what I was looking for. “Pinniman,” it said.
The years went by, and one day I came again to Olsen’s flower shop. My old boss and I talked a while. Out of curiosity, I asked, “D’you suppose that Mrs. Pinniman ever knew her husband was sending flowers to his old flame?” “Jeffrey Pinniman never even knew about it.” Mr. Olsen smiled, “It is a lady who said she wasn’t going to sit around watching Miss Caroline make a martyr (长期受折磨者) of herself at her expense.”

Regular movement helps keep your body flexible and pain-free, especially for your back muscles.
Switch sides
Using your dominant side too much can lead to muscle imbalances and more back pain and injuries.
Correct imbalances

4 . When my wife and I didn’t work long, our budget was tight. We tried to save as much money as possible so we could afford overspend occasionally. At the same time, we benefited a lot from the kindness of local store owners.
When my wife was expecting our child, she developed a craving for a local Chinese restaurant’s version of tai dop voy, a mixture of meat, shrimp and vegetables. Even though they rarely saw us, the owners remembered us. One evening, I ordered tai dop voy. They enthusiastically treated me and said, “There is some fried rice for your wife. Have a healthy baby.” The bag was obviously heavier than normal. When I got home, there was not only fried rice but also two orders of tai dop voy.
That was many years ago. But those small kindnesses from locals made a difference. Customers were seen as more than a source of profit. We were members of the community that local businesses served.
The generosity I experienced years ago hasn’t disappeared. I witnessed it recently at my local farmers’ market. A family was debating whether to add another vegetable to the order. The farmer served them and said, “Sorry, I forgot. I have so many vegetables this year. Buy two, and you’ll get another for free. Pick out any one you like.” I thought the farmer was being morally flexible: no prices on the produce, but everything is fairly priced. Fairness is in the sense that care and kindness are parts of the merchant-client relationship.
The kindness of merchants is a sign of something deeper: We are all making our shared way together. For my part, I will continue to support farmers’ markets and family-run restaurants. I am happy to make a fair offer.

This is a student town with a vibrant culture and an important cultural festival — the International Cervantino Festival which is held every October.
Puebla
Puebla is one of Mexico’s large cities, but its historical center can easily be explored on foot. It has some special historical structures such as the 16th-century cathedral and some other fine buildings with walls covered in tiles.

Back to first grade
“Criss Cross Applesauce!” The teacher’s voice bounced off the walls of the first-grade room. Immediately the six-year-olds ran to the reading rug (毯子)and took their seats with their legs crossed. I looked at the students and gave them a thumbs-up.
Just six weeks ago. I had been the envy of my classmates. For my mentoring (导师) project. I had been assigned to first grade. Everyone figured that working with little kids would be less challenging than working with the older elementary students.
“You’re so lucky, Chloe,” said my best friend Maneya. “I have to work with fourth graders. Ugh!”
“I know! It'll be like having a couple of hours off from school each week!” I said.
But I soon learned that helping teach first grade was no vacation at all. I was assigned four students: Sara, Allie, Fernando and Cameron. Sara cried every morning. Allie continually wiped her hands on the back of my shirt. Fernando refused to speak. Cameron didn't want to participate in anything.
“I think first grade has changed a lot from when we were first graders,” I told Maneya. Maneya smiled at me, and secretly I thought she was thanking her lucky stars that she was working with fourth graders. Her students completed their exercises without complaining. It sounded like a great classroom to spend time in.
Twice a week, I worked with my group. Most days I returned to my own campus really tired. Once, my teacher asked me why I was wearing a paper crown. I had completely forgotten that I had been filling in for Cameron. who had decided he no longer wanted to be the king in the group’s rehearsal (排练) of their performance “King for a Day”.
Maneya comforted me as I told story after story about first grade. But as the weeks went on, I began to notice I wasn’t the one who was complaining anymore. I had figured out how things worked in the first grade, and Maneya was the one who started to complain. Her experiences with fourth graders began to dull in comparison with my adventures with the six year olds.

9 . After a busy morning, lunch can feel like just the pick-me-up you need-but sometimes the meal that you thought would energize you is the very thing that makes you want to nap at your desk.
Feeling tired after lunch, or post-meals in general, is known as postprandial somnolence—or, colloquially, the food coma.
Part of this phenomenon is due to basic physiology (生理学): When humans eat, most of our blood goes to the digestive organs to process the food, said Sandra Arévalo, director of community health and wellness at Montefiore Nyack Hospital in New York state.
The tendency to get tired after eating isn’t inherently suggestive of something amiss (出错的). But there can be additional factors that worsen this natural response, making getting through the rest of the workday or any activities feel like a slog. Here’s what to watch out for and how to make adjustments.
When it comes to why you feel overly tired after eating, a common cause is consuming meals that are heavy in terms of quantity or quality. Not eating breakfast can lead to overindulging later in the day if excessive (过度的) hunger makes controlling your appetite difficult, Arévalo said.
Sometimes, however, the makeup of certain foods can contribute to tiredness. Fats are the hardest nutrient to digest because their molecules are much larger than those of protein or carbs, said Julie Stefanski, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. If you had a meal high in fat—such as fried foods or pizza—that could make you feel tired. Meals high in added sugar or refined or highly processed carbohydrates can have the same effect.
The fiber in so-called whole foods like corns slows the absorption of sugar into the body, which means they don’t cause blood sugar or insulin spikes and instead give you more stable, lasting energy, said Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic.
“A five-minute walk or something helps to improve circulation and alertness (机敏), as well,” Arévalo said.
