文章大意:这是一篇说明文,讲述了如何判断镜子是否是双面镜的一些方法。

1 . Have you ever been in a bathroom, dressing room or another private area with a mirror and had that feeling that someone is watching you? You can check to see if a mirror is transparent by observing how it is installed and using a few simple techniques to determine if there’s a wall behind it.     1

Check out the lighting. For a two-way mirror to be effective, the light on the mirrored side needs to be 10 times brighter than the light on the other side. If the lighting is dimmer, it’s possible to see through the glass to the observation area. Look around and determine whether the lighting seems extraordinarily bright.     2

3    Press your face up to the mirror and cup your hands around it, creating a dark tunnel to block out as much light as possible. When you do this, if the light in the observation room is at all brighter than the light on your side of the mirror, you should be able to see something through the glass.

Sound it out. The sound of tapping a two-way mirror has also been described as bright or sharp as opposed to a thud (砰的一声) from an everyday mirror. Tap on the surface of the mirror with your knuckle (指节).     4    An observation mirror will produce an open, hollow and echoing sound because there is an open space on the other side.

5    Then hold a flashlight to the mirror (it can be the “flashlight” on your smartphone). If it is a two-way mirror, the room on the other side will be illuminated and you’ll be able to see it.

A.Turn off the lights.
B.Try to look through the glass.
C.Observe how the mirror is installed.
D.If so, you might be looking at a two-way mirror.
E.There are some accurate ways to tell if a mirror is two-way or not.
F.A normal mirror will produce a dull, flat sound, since it’s placed in front of a wall.
G.People standing on the other side of the wall can observe someone looking in the mirror.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了如何成为尖子生的方法。

2 . Everyone wants to perform well at school. Add these tips to your life and you should be on your way to being a top student!

1    I cannot stress how important it is to pay attention to what your teacher is teaching you. Take part in class discussions if you have something worth adding. Pay attention during class.

Taking notes is important. You don’t need to write down every single word your teacher says but write down what he or she writes on the blackboard, or any special fact you think you might need for a test.    2       In this way, it will help you learn more effectively by thinking about what you are writing.

Don’t skip school. You will be missing courses.    3    However, you will have more work and you have missed lectures. Also, try not to be late for class. It’s most likely that your teacher won’t appreciate it and you will get yourself behind.

Keep a good attitude (态度) towards things. If you have an “ I don’t care about school or this class” attitude, then teachers will be less willing to help you with problems. The same goes for lazy attitude. Have a respectful attitude to the teacher and other students.     4

Always ask questions.     5     If you don’t understand, ask someone. Read your textbook and notes, and then if that fails, ask a teacher, friend, classmate, parent, etc.

A.Be prepared.
B.Write in your own words.
C.Staying organized will be helpful.
D.Pay attention to what the teacher says.
E.It is true that you could make up the work.
F.There is no shame (羞愧)in needing some help.
G.Try not to laugh when other students make mistakes.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要讲述了怀旧的好处。

4 . Nostalgia (怀旧) has become increasingly common in our current climate of unexpected, fast-paced change. More and more people are turning back with longing for what feels like simpler, sweeter times. They collect cassette tapes, manual typewriters even decades-old video games.

Is it a mistake to get too obsessed with the past? Some psychologists warn that too much devotion to the so-called good old days is an escape from reality; it can indicate loneliness or that a person is having a difficult time coping in the present. Psychologist Stephanie Coontz argues that nostalgia distracts us from addressing the problems of modern life and contributes to anxiety, depression, insomnia etc.

But new studies suggest that a modest dose of nostalgia is not only harmless, but actually beneficial. They suggest it helps strengthen our sense of identity and makes us feel more optimistic and inspired. It is also a tool for self-discovery and memories are a psychological immune response that is triggered when you want to take a break from negativity. Interestingly, those happy memories can be particularly beneficial both to kids in their teens and to society’s elders. Recalling our childhood reminds us of “the times when we were accented and loved unconditionally,” says Krystine Batcho, a psychologist. “That is such a powerfully comforting phenomenon, knowing that there was a time in life when we didn’t have to earn our love.” Nostalgia can transform even the most ordinary past into legends which warms the heart and the body. Let’s not forget that nostalgia has been a source of inspiration to innumerable American writers. Mark Twain recalled his boyhood, writing, “after all these years, I can picture that old time to myself now, just as it was then: The white town drowsing in the sunshine of a summer’s morning.”

So go ahead, daydream a little about your best childhood friend, your first car, a long-gone family pet. As Dr. Sedikidessays, “Nostalgia is absolutely central to human experience.” But at the same time, keep these words of wisdom from the great inventor Charles Kettering in mind as well: “You can’t have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time.”

1. What did some psychologists in paragraph 2 probably agree?
A.Nostalgia can cause some mental problems.
B.Nostalgia makes us devoted to the present life.
C.Nostalgia shows you are trying to get rid of loneliness.
D.Nostalgia helps us cope with the difficult time we are going through.
2. There are many benefits of nostalgia except ________ .
A.It can enable us to know ourselves better
B.It can bring us some comfort when we recall
C.We are likely to gain attention if we recall the happy childhood
D.We can sometimes break away from negativity with happy memories
3. What will be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.The reasons why we should avoid nostalgia.
B.The great changes nostalgia will bring to you.
C.The bad memories that always stick around you.
D.The bad influence of too much devotion to nostalgia.
4. What does the author intend to tell us?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何给人留下美好的第一印象。

7 . Ways to make a great first impression

You’ve heard it a million times already. But it really does take but a few seconds to make that all-important first impression(印象). Here are some easy ways for you to impress your classmates or teachers.

*    1

Before you shake hands with somebody, make sure that your hands are clean. The hand-shake should not be too strong or weak. Most people use their right hands, unless they have a reason to use the left.     2

*Be on time

When meeting someone for the first time, arriving on time is as important as breathing. You may have an excuse, but that will leave the person who hardly knows you with a bad impression.     3     It’s better to be hanging around the place than be stuck in traffic.

*Introduce yourself and ask for names

Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask for their name in a polite way.     4    . This will increase the chances of their remembering your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you’re with.

*Make good conversation

To get the most out of your discussion, try to find something common between the two of you.     5    . A person will feel more comfortable with someone they can relate to(产生共鸣).

A.Use body language
B.Have a proper handshake
C.Repeat the name and use it later in conversation.
D.It could be a similar taste in clothes or a common hobby
E.As a general rule, plan to arrive about 30 minutes early.
F.You’ll be in serious trouble if you leave them with a bad impression.
G.However, don’t have your left hand in your pocked because this appears impolite.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了学生在学校使用VR的情形、VR教学的现状以及它的优点等。

8 . It was a February afternoon in a Brooklyn classroom. Sixteen-year-old Taylor Engler came face to face with a cow. But it was all in her head. She was transported by a virtual reality (VR) headphone. It took the Berkeley Carroll School junior and eight other classmates to a northern New York farm. The farm was 250 miles away. For students, the technology means field trips are no longer kept within the length of a bus ride.

It's unknown how many classrooms have or will use the technology, but experts say few classrooms do or will do. Headphones that require a user's phone can cost as little as $20 or $30, but systems and software for classes run into thousands of dollars. The problem of not having good software is disappearing as more companies enter the market. But the rules for use haven't kept abreast of the development of the technology. In New York, for example, virtual reality lab experiments are not included in the state's hands-on lab time requirements.

Experts say science classes are where virtual reality holds promise for classrooms. “The biggest problem, I think, is going to be how closely it mimics the real world." That's according to David Evans, the director of the National Science Teachers Union. However, he said, “The ability to do dangerous things and to run many, many more cases in a virtual space as opposed to the real physical space stands for a huge learning chance.”

Lamb taught chemistry and he agreed. “Too often in schools, when you do experiments in labs, you mix these together, you mix those together and you get this result. And if you don't get that result, you have done something wrong. But we don't have enough resources for you to redo it, “he said. “In virtual reality, all I do is hit reset on the computer. I don't have to actually use chemicals.”

1. What was Taylor Engler doing?
A.Riding a bus.B.Giving a lesson.C.Designing a farm.D.Experiencing VR.
2. What does the underlined part “kept abreast of" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Led to.B.Focused on.C.Caught up with.D.Broken away from.
3. What did Lamb think of the use of VR in the classroom?
A.Helpful.B.Troublesome.C.Interesting.D.Challenging.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To point out the importance of practice.B.To introduce the use of VR in teaching.
C.To give information about modern schools.D.To show the appearance of VR technology.
