1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs (嫩枝), “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving (感到悲伤), I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. Gradually, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pi le of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch, though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文,介绍了如何识别并避免消耗我们情感能量的情况,包括无意义的争论、说闲话、反复忧虑和渴望得到认可等。

2 . Emotional energy is a relatively new term to describe our vitality (活力).     1     If we feel that some situations drain (耗尽) us, then it’s because they take away all our vitality in matters that are insignificant, but ones that do require effort. They’re situations that only distract us from what’s truly important, and from the things that enrich us. Let’s learn to identify them and avoid them.

Arguments about insignificant issues

A debate is a great opportunity to present your own points of view and learn from other’s opinions. However, something very different happens when two people get into a pointless argument.     2

Gossip

3    . This sort of curiosity is no more than a sign of a lack of identity. Whoever gossips about others looks for themselves in other people. The thing is, they just can’t find themselves.

Worrying over and over again

One of the situations that drain our emotional energy is unstoppable doubt. This is when we think and think but only come up with “ifs” and “buts”. We try to find the right answer or make the right decision just by reflection.     4

Need for approval

We’re constantly trying to get other people’s approval.     5     Instead of investing time to explore who we are, whether others like us or not, we just spend our time doing things that other people want us to do. Generally, people either accept you or they don’t, and sometimes for reasons that are completely beyond your control.

A.We spend so much time worrying about things that it blurs our vision of life.
B.The only purpose of it is to “beat the other person”, and express their own points of view.
C.By doing this we’re just cheating ourselves.
D.Vitality is the strength that we have before tiredness sets in.
E.We go on and on about the same problem, without actually doing anything to solve it.
F.Sticking our noses into other’s private lives, instead of our own, drains our emotional energy.
G.However, we forget that many answers come only when we combine thought and action.

3 . “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish, by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”---Albert Einstein

If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, you’re likely to have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn’t always an accurate measure of her abilities.

By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence increase rapidly.” he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers.

Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: wonderful. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done---she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase greatly. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.

I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all have. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.

1. What does the author think of Albert Einstein’s saying?
A.Funny.B.True.C.Strange.D.Confusing.
2. What can we learn about Syona’s teacher?
A.She is Syona’s favorite teacher.
B.She puts Einstein’s quote on the wall
C.She uses videos to teach her students.
D.She helps increase her students’ confidence.
3. What change has taken place in the author’s family?
A.They’ve invited Ulmer’s students to their home.
B.They visit Ulmer’s classroom regularly.
C.They give each other praise every day.
D.They feel thankful to people in their lives.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards Chris Ulmar’s way of teaching?
A.SupportiveB.OpposedC.IndifferentD.Negative

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了阴阳瑜伽。阴阳瑜伽是一种高能运动的结合,它能增强能量,增强力量,提高耐力。

4 . In an ideal world, we would be able to devote as much time to sports as we feel we need. But in reality, with growing demands in both work and family, we can only jump at the chance for our physical exercise when we can. Making the most of that time to practice Yin Yang yoga, which mixes the dynamic and slow-paced elements of yoga, helps keep you active and relaxed.

Yin and Yang are the Taoist concepts representing a balance of opposite forces which are also interconnected. Yin is inactive, cooling, and negative, associated with the female force. Yang is active, warming, and positive, associated with action and movement. They are complementary to one another, as one cannot exist without the other.

Yin Yang yoga is a combination of high-energy movement which builds energy, increases strength and promotes stamina (耐力), followed by the more restful practice of Yin to give us a deeper stretch (拉伸) and calm the nervous system.

If you have a busy and active life you may feel more in Yang, so taking some cooler, slower Yin yoga practice into your routine may help you feel calmer and more balanced.

If you are practicing for an hour, divide the time in half, Warm up with sun salutations (拜日式瑜伽), continue into a dynamic flow and then move on to some standing postures. After half an hour your heart will be pumping, muscles tighten up and you are hopefully feeling energetic, but ready for a rest. Then pick five Yin postures to hold for 3-5 minutes, or even longer if you are enjoying them!

As ever with yoga, if you are a beginner or have health issues, always attend a class with a trained instructor first to guide you safely through the yoga practice and avoid injury.

1. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A.Most of our sports time should be spent on Yin Yang yoga.
B.We’d better devote as much time to physical exercise as we can.
C.Busy schedule makes it impossible for us to do any form of sports.
D.Yin Yang yoga can be a choice of physical exercise when time is tight.
2. What does the underlined word “complementary” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A.Independent from one another.
B.Competitive against one another.
C.Similar to each other but unable to work together as a whole.
D.Different from each other but together making a good combination.
3. Which of the following might be the benefit of Yin postures?
A.Relaxing muscles.B.Building stamina.
C.Strengthening the body.D.Quickening the heartbeat.
4. What suggestion does the writer give in the last two paragraphs?
A.Hold each Yin posture for longer than 5 minutes.
B.Do not practice yoga when you are not in good health.
C.Start your yoga practice under the guidance of a trainer.
D.Spare half an hour for five Yin postures in every yoga practice.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章探讨了在数字时代,社交媒体用户为什么容易陷入假新闻的陷阱,以及如何通过一款名为ChamberBreaker的游戏工具来识别和抵制网络上的回声室效应。

6 . In today’s digital era, social media users are increasingly coming across fake news online. This leads to the pressing issue: What causes people to fall for misinformation on the Internet?

According to researchers at the Penn State College of Information Sciences and Technology,   users can easily fall into an echo chamber (回声室)—a sort of virtual space where users consume only one-sided news, eventually distrusting any opposing views. “We all tend to agree with the group opinion. Hence, people naturally get together with others who hold the same opinion,” said Dongwon Lee, one of the researchers. “But if you’re not cautious, there is a high risk of falling into an echo chamber.”

To prevent this phenomenon, the researchers have crafted a novel tool, a game named ChamberBreaker, to help players resist echo chambers and reduce the rate of fake news spread. The fundamental approach employed by ChamberBreaker centers around a decision-making procedure that mirrors the creation of echo chambers. In ChamberBreaker, a player is tasked with trying to have community members fall into an echo chamber. To begin, the player is randomly assigned a situation that focuses on a health, political or environmental issue, and is presented with six pieces of news on that topic. Then, the player selects news that could cause the other members to fall into an echo chamber while at the same time maintaining their trust. If successful, the community members will fall into an echo chamber and the player will witness the resulting negative effects on the community.

After developing ChamberBreaker, researchers tested it with over 800 subjects to see if it raised awareness of echo chambers and changed news consumption behaviors. The researchers found that those who played ChamberBreaker were significantly more likely to state their intention to observe online information from more diverse perspectives and showed an increased awareness of the echo chamber phenomenon.

Ultimately, the researchers hope that their methodology can excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study related to information consumption. The application of tools like ChamberBreaker, which focuses on fostering analytical reasoning, may lead us towards a more informed online community.

1. What can be learned about an online echo chamber?
A.It encourages well-judged views.
B.It gathers like-minded individuals.
C.It functions as a virtual reality platform.
D.It serves as a tool for identifying fake information.
2. What is ChamberBreaker’s core method against echo chambers?
A.Assignment of situations.B.Trust-building exercises.
C.News selection strategy.D.Community impact assessment.
3. Which of the following can show ChamberBreaker’s effectiveness?
A.The results of scientific testing.
B.The theoretical framework of the game.
C.The description of the game procedures.
D.The common challenges faced during gameplay.
4. What is the likely long-term effect of playing ChamberBreaker?
A.Reducing news inquiry.B.Encouraging passive reading.
C.Strengthening prejudiced views.D.Enhancing critical thinking.

From popular photo-editing apps to plastic surgery (整形手术), it seems that large eyes, pale skin and a skinny body are the only standard for beauty these days. But can following this standard really make us feel good about ourselves?

3     . According to Huxiu News, over six in ten girls choose not to take part in certain daily activities, such as attending school, because they feel bad about their looks. As much as 31 percent of teenagers avoid speaking up in class because they worry that others will notice their looks.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Cody always knew his family was different. While other kids went to the beach for summer vacation, he and his mom visited the world’s largest baseball bat or the world’s largest fork. Cody’s mom even had photos framed on the wall.

As a kid, Cody thought these vacations were the best ever. But later, somewhere during their search for the world’s biggest ball of twine(麻团), he started to feel embarrassed. When his classmates, especially Nathan, asked where he’d gone for vacation, he’d say, “No place special.”

Cody could tell that his mom was planning something when she walked into the kitchen with a shine in her eye. It was the same shine she’d had on those photos! “I was reading this article about the world’s largest gathering of people dressed as turkeys. It was in Texas, and it was only 661 people! Five times as many people living in our town.”

“And then?” Cody doubted.

“We can hold a similar one here around Thanksgiving!”

“Mom,” Cody said. “No.”

“Yes,” Mom confirmed. “I just called the newspaper. The announcement runs tomorrow. The day after Thanksgiving, everyone will meet in the town square, dressed as turkeys!”

Cody could do nothing but sigh.

Back to school the next day, Nathan shouted, “Hey, Cody!” Whenever Nathan talked, it always meant trouble. “Gobble(火鸡叫), gobble!” Nathan came strutting(昂首阔步走)like a turkey. Other kids laughed as Cody rushed to the class. It turned out that the announcement wasn’t just in the paper but all over social media.

The big day came. But instead of dancing around the house as she’d been all week, Mom was sitting on the floor, shoulders drooping. She was staring at the electronic equipment. “I can’t believe the DJ(音响师)is sick. Without music, how can we make the gathering festive?” Mom sighed sadly.

Cody looked at his mom, thinking that this was his chance to escape. No more gobbling. No more strutting. No more embarrassment.
