1 . Spreading kindness not only helps others feel better about themselves but also boosts the giver’s health and happiness, according to a study.     1    .

Giving seems to lower our blood pressure.

    2    . One study asked a group of hypertensive (高血压的) people to spend $40 on themselves, while another group of people with high blood pressure were told to spend the money on others. They found that spending money on others had reduced their blood pressure at the end of the six-week study

    3    .

A recent study found that people who said they would donate money to help orphans were less sensitive to an electric shock than those who declined to give. According to the study, regions of the brain that react to painful stimulation appear to be instantly out of operation by the experience of giving.

Being kind seems to boost happiness.

Another study assigned people to three groups: the first group had to do an act of kindness each day; the second group tried a new activity each day; and the third group did nothing. The first two groups saw a significant boost in happiness.     4    , if you’re creative with your acts of kindness, than those who performed the same activity over and over again.

“When doing an act of kindness, you’re making the world a better place,” said the Random Acts of Kindness foundation, which promotes kindness all year.     5    .

B.Giving seems to lessen our pain
C.You’ll experience even greater joy
D.But consider being kind to yourself

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too.

He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said.

The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone.

During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.

Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言).

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文,主要介绍了平均学分绩点(GPA)的概念、计算方式和大学课程不及格的后果。

3 . What is a GPA?

A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It’s used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into post-graduate programs.

How to calculate a GPA?

● Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;

● Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;

● Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;

● Add up all the credit hours for the courses;

● Divide the total number of grade points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.

                                     Example: Academic Transcript of Jane Smith                    Winter 2023
CoursesLetter GradeGrade pointsCredit hoursTotal pointsGPA
Creative WritingA+4.0312-
PsychologyA-3.7311.1-
HistoryB+3.339.9-
Computer ScienceF0.020-
Total--1133

What are the consequences of failing college courses?

● Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts your GPA for that academic year, limiting clubs, organizations and program choices, as competitive programs require top GPAs.

● Most financial aid programs require a specific GPA. A sharp drop in GPA due to several course failures may lead to withdrawal from financial aid programs, unless you retake the courses and pass.

● For college athletes on sports scholarships, failing courses repeatedly can lead to losing scholarships and team sports.

● Failing multiple courses can result in school removal and affect future applications.

1. Where is this text probably taken from?
A.An academic course guide.B.A campus job fair poster.
C.A graduate application form.D.An athletic team schedule.
2. What is Jane Smith’s GPA this term?
A.3.3.B.3.0.C.2.8.D.1.0.
3. What would be a result if you get one F in college?

C.Choice limitation.D.Disqualification in sports.

9 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Julia lived in a fairytale-like village among rolling hills, with a snaking river flowing through its heart, home to diverse fishes. From a young age, she always spent hours running along the riverbank and sometimes she sat down and watched in awe as the fishes swam gracefully through the crystal-clear waters.

One day, she discovered a deep hole not far from the river. In the depth of it, there lay a tiny pool of water where she spotted a trout (鳟鱼) gasping for air. She bent down and peered at the fish in its tiny “prison”, its silver stomach going up and down like an engine. Thinking of its hunger, Julia went and fetched the trout a worm, but it ignored the food and just went on breathing fast. In her curious and sympathetic mind, she wondered how he had been there.

As she made her way back home, her mind was consumed with thoughts of the fish and the mystery surrounding it. So, she told her mother the tale of the trout in the deep hole and asked for her opinion.

“Maybe a bird had carried the egg to the hole, just like the story.” She replied.

“What story?” Naturally, Julia followed.

And so her mother started to tell the whole story of how a bird carried a trout egg to a deep well, where the trout was born and trapped.

“And so, in the end, this fish got bigger and bigger, and the water got smaller and smaller.” She was about to end the story when Julia cried out loud: “Mom, please don’t make it a sad horrible story.”

To change the direction of the story, her mother even brought in a fairy, who had made it rain and filled the hole, so that the trout could be scooped (舀) up and then sent back to the river.

At the end of the story, Julia sank into thoughts as she knew that there was no such thing as a fairy but the trout was really there, struggling for its life.
