文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了拍太多照片不利于人们铭记瞬间的美好,作者鼓励人们应有目地、有计划地拍照。

4 . The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.

Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.

Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted (分散注意力的) by the process that we miss the moment altogether.

The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good — until that piece of paper goes missing.

The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo—how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.

However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides. When people take the time to zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened.

Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.

Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.

B.Many sources influence people’s memories during photo-taking.
C.Photos are more detailed than memories.
D.Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize.
3. What may likely be discussed next?
A.Situations when taking photos is better.
B.How to use photo-taking to memorize better.

5 . More than half of the food produced in Canada goes to waste. A shocking new study has shown that the level of food waste is far worse than previously thought, at 58%. Of that, about 85% of food waste is due to food processors. This differs from earlier studies, which criticized families for driving food waste and said they were responsible for 51% of food waste.

The study was carried out by Martin Hooch, the leading expert on food waste and the author of several previous studies on the subject. Reflecting on the study’s findings, Hooch said, “It means stopping criticizing consumers. Sure, consumers are part of the problem, but they’re not the problem.”

In the past, Hooch didn’t master good data, particularly from the private factories, but relied on numbers collected by the food industry for purposes other than tracking waste. This time, however, Hooch worked directly with companies at all stages along the food production chain and interviewed over 700 experts in the industry. Clearly he found it hard to believe what he was seeing.

This is what they found: Food processing causes 34% of food waste. This is followed by production, which causes 24%. Next is manufacturing at 13%, then hotels and restaurants at 9%. Families cause only 14%, and market sales 6%. This should be a scrious wake-up call for Canadians who would do well to examine their own food supply chains. Food waste is costly, not only in terms of dollars wasted, but also in resources like land, water, and so on. To be using these resources and wasting the product is totally irresponsible and unnecessary.

To make matters worse, when food is thrown into rubbish cans, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas 30 times more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2). At Canada’s rate of food waste, that’s like adding 12 million cars to the road. It seems that the food industry needs redesigning. Therefore, let’s hope the government takes action.

1. What did earlier studies say about food waste in Canada?
A.Families were to blame for food waste.B.Food went bad when it was processed.
C.Most of the food was wasted on purpose.D.Food waste was better than expected.
2. How did Hooch do his study on food waste this time?
A.By studying data from the industry.B.By drawing a conclusion from the previous studies.
C.By collecting advice from experts worldwide.D.By tracking the whole production chain.
3. Why does food waste have an effect on the environment?
A.Because it is harmful to the trees.B.Because it produces more greenhouse gas.
C.Because it gives off unpleasant smells.D.Because it pollutes the soil around it.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Canadians don’t like to save food for future.
B.Families are mainly responsible for food waste.
C.More than half of the food is wasted in Canada.
D.The food industry is better redesigned in Canada.

Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.

High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.

The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger.

The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了美国英语不断被不同的文化所丰富的社会现象。

9 . "Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.

Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation (直译) of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on Google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.

Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective (警探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.

Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the color and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.

You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness.

1. What did the writer himself feel surprised at?
A.The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”
B.So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
C.“Long time no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.
D.Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
2. What do the underlined words “melting pot” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Confucius’s words.B.Culture mixture.
C.A kind of cooked dish.D.American changing cultures.
3. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see.”
B.Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C.The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D.Hollywood made “Long time no see.” popular.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.
B.Americans have a strong interest in Chinese culture.
C.Some American expressions can be used in China.
D.Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
