文章大意:这是一篇说明文。香蕉在美国很受欢迎,文章解释了香蕉可以帮助我们变得更快乐的原因。

3 . Bananas have happy superpower. Here’s the science, from a researcher who specializes in the links between nutrition and mood. Ninety percent of Americans say they eat bananas at least once a month, which are followed by apples, making them the most popular fruit in the U.S. Not only are bananas delicious in healthy banana bread and smoothies; but eaten alone, bananas are packed with healthy vitamins and nutrients. Among its various benefits, this sunny yellow fruit has a happy superpower: it can serve as an important mood-booster.

“Due to the state of the world right now, a lot of people are having problems with stress, anxiety, depression, burnout and sleeplessness,”says Shawn Talbott, Ph.D, a nutritional biochemist who specializes in researching the links between nutrition and mood. If you can relate, Dr. Talbott offers his understanding into why our love for bananas is a bright spot in the American diet.

Dr. Talbott explains the main reason bananas may be the basic mood food: one banana contains 20 percent of your recommended daily allowance of vitamin B6. This vitamin is scientifically shown to reduce depression and anxiety, better the effects of stress, and improve mood overall, according to a 2019 study of how B vitamins affect mood, published in Nature.

The trick is vitamin B6’s power to produce serotonin (血清素), a powerful brain neurotransmitter, which is nicknamed the “happy hormone (荷尔蒙).” Dr. Talbott adds that bananas are also high in prebiotic fiber and potassium (钾), which are other nutrients linked to a good mood.

In fact, people who ate a diet higher in potassium showed less depression and a better mood overall, according to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Dr. Talbott explains that vitamins, including B6, are one way to help support your body and mind in dealing with all of problems.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了教师环境会影响孩子的心理健康,同时这项研究表明,学校和教师在儿童的心理健康中扮演着重要的角色。

5 . First-grade classrooms with poor environments—not enough resources, teachers who feel disrespected by colleagues—have been linked to a higher number of mental health problems in students, according to a new study.

The study doesn’t prove that classrooms that face more challenges directly cause mental health problems in kids. However, “being in a classroom with a lack of resources might disadvantageously affect children’s mental health because children are frustrated or disheartened by their surroundings,” said study lead author Melissa A. Milkie, a sociology professor at the University of Maryland.

“Teachers may also be more discouraged when they can’t teach properly due to the fact that they are missing key parts,” she explained.

Milkie said the study shows that schools and teachers play important roles in children’s mental health. “I think parents care a lot about their children’s mental health—their emotional and behavioral well-being—but we as a society don’t focus on that as much as we talk about and think about academic outcomes,” Milkie said.

The study is based on interviews with the parents and teachers of about 10,700 first-graders in the United States. The researchers found that students in classrooms with fewer resources, in terms of inadequate teaching materials and teachers who didn’t feel supported by colleagues, were more likely to experience problems in several mental health areas.

For teachers, to get the support and encouragement that they need from colleagues, including the principal (校长), is likely important for whether the teachers are able to create a classroom climate that helps children grow healthily. If teachers are feeling stressed out because they aren’t getting what they need from their colleagues, that stress may carry over to the kids.

Although the current study only looked at students in first grade, Milkie thinks the findings would probably be very similar in higher grades. “I would be surprised if there were different findings for older children,” she said.

1. Which of the following is given the most attention by the society according to Milkie?
A.Children’s mental health.B.Students’ academic outcomes.
C.Teachers’ welfare.D.Classroom environments.
2. How can we help teachers create a health y classroom climate?2
A.Support and encourage them.B.Make students feel relaxed.
C.Help them with their family life.D.Reduce their teaching tasks.
3. How does Milkie think the findings will be if a study is carried out in higher grades?
A.Surprising.B.Uncertain.C.Almost the same.D.Completely different.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Teachers Should Have Enough Teaching Materials
B.First-grade Classrooms Need Better Environments
C.Classroom Environments May Affect Kids’ Mental Health
D.Schools Can Pay More Attention to Students’ Mental Health

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。这篇文章主要讲述了中国古代的丝绸之路以及开辟这条道路的张骞。张骞被人们铭记为一位开启东西方文化交流新时代的伟大探险家。

7 . The ancient silk road was a once in a life time journey. It was one of the most important milestones of trade and culture in world history, and the pioneer, Zhang Qian, could not be easily forgotten by history. He was an outstanding diplomat, traveler and explorer in the Han Dynasty of China, honored as the “the first Chinese to open their eyes to see the world” and “the Columbus of the east”.

In 138 BC, at the reign of Emperor Wudi, Zhang Qian was sent to the west of China for an alliance with the Yue-chi people to fight against the Xiongnu. He started his trip from Chang’an(now Xi’an in Shanxi Province)to Longxi(in Gansu Province). Along the way, no matter how difficult the environment was, his faith was firm. But unfortunately, Zhang was caught by the Xiongnu people just as he left Han, and was held prisoner for ten years.

Zhang finally managed to escape with some of his men and continued to travel west without any dry food or drinking water. Due to the excellent skill of shooting arrows, they survived by eating some birds and other animals along the way. When Zhang at last reached the Yue-chi in Northern India, he was disappointed to find that they didn’t want to fight against the Xiongnu people. On the return journey, Zhang Qian and his men were again caught. It was not until 125 BC that they returned to Chang’an.

Though Zhang hadn’t finished his mission, he brought back first-hand information on the geography, ethnography, and societies of Central Asia. The paths Zhang Qian explored later served as the highways connecting Europe, the Middle East, Mesopotamia, Central Asia, and East Asia. Commodities, crops, animals, religions, ideas, music, technology, and artifacts have been transported by diplomats, merchants and soldiers along this network of highways, which have, since the 19th century been known as the “Silk Road”. Whiter Paint

The paint on a white building reflects 80 to 90% of the sunlight that strikes it. The rest of the light warms the surrounding area, raising air-conditioning bills. But the Whiter Paint is made of chemicals that better reflect UV rays. It reflects up to 98% of the sunlight, which could reduce AC use by 40%. “The heat is reflected into deep space,” says Xiulin Ruan, who led the Purdue University team that created the paint.

Duolingo app

Now you can take music lessons on a smartphone, using this app, which uses an on-screen piano to teach basics such as harmony and beat. You learn by interacting with more than 200 popular pieces of music. Just match sounds to notes and play along. “You don’t need natural talent to learn music,” says Karen Chow, who’s a learning scientist at Duolingo.

Model A

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了如何成为一个有效的倾听者。

9 . When people in your organization come to you to discuss a problem, you give them your best answer and probably assume you’ve helped them.

1    . You’re not being much help if you’re not really listening to them. We’re not talking about the mere act of listening, but the art of listening, known as active listening. How can you become a more effective listener? Here are some tips:

Be present.     2    . There’re so many things that make you lose focus in the office many of them tech-related, like instant messaging and email—that you almost can’t help but half listen to anyone who speaks to you, whether it’s in person or by phone. What you need to do is purposefully practice active listening by bringing yourself fully into the conversation.     3    .

Give the other person your undivided attention. It shows respect and can have a positive impact on your entire exchange. It also means you’re less likely to misunderstand, or simply miss, what the person is saying to you.     4     when a customer or coworker is telling you about a problem you already know how to solve before they’ve finished speaking. But part of active listening means you need to let them complete their full “download” to you before you respond.

Understand nonverbal(非语言) changes.     5    , but good listeners will also sense what is not being said, as well as what is verbalized. Learning how to read physical cues, such as facial expressions, takes practice. Improving these active listening skills will help you get the message and resolve problems faster.

A.Well, it may not be that simple
B.Listening naturally means hearing
C.Of course, it’s easy to become impatient
D.Wait for an appropriate moment to politely ask a question
E.Be mindful and concentrate on the message, word for word
F.Truly hearing what the speaker has to say requires your full attention
G.Good active listening skills apply when you’re communicating with others

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,研究表明,聊天机器人,如ChatGPT,可能是帮助医疗保健提供者与患者沟通的有价值的工具。

10 . New research concludes people may struggle to differentiate between medical advice given by chatbots (聊天机器人) and human health care providers. Findings indicate chatbots, like ChatGPT, could be valuable tools in assisting healthcare providers in communicating with patients.

ChatGPT is trained to predict the most probable next word in a conversation using vast amounts of Internet data. It responds to user enquiries, learning from human feedback. However, it’s not without limitations. ChatGPT, like other large language models(LLMs), can sometimes produce biased information and lacks the ability to perform true reasoning.

The research had 392 participants aged 18 and above who were presented with ten patient questions. Half of the responses to these questions were given by humans, while the other half came from ChatGPT. Participants then had to identify the origin of each response and rate their trust in the chatbot’s answers from “completely untrustworthy” to “completely trustworthy”. Participants could only correctly identify chatbot-given responses 65.5% of the time. Participants displayed the most trust in chatbots when handling the matters, such as scheduling appointments or addressing insurance enquiries, with an average trust score of 3.94. Preventative care questions, like cancer screenings, came next at 3.52. However, trust decreased for diagnostic (诊断) and treatment advice, registering scores of 2.90 and 2.89 respectively.

The study’s results indicate the potential chatbots possess in aiding patient-provider communications, especially in areas like administrative tasks. But scientists have something to say regarding chatbots assuming more clinical roles. “Providers should exercise picky judgment when it comes to chatbot-given advice due to the limitations of AI models,” researchers said in a statement.

The use of AI into healthcare is no longer a distant possibility but a rapidly evolving reality. This study offers a glimpse (瞥见) into the ways we can expect to see AI platforms team with medical clinics. It also shows us improvements that are needed so that new technologies become effective aids and tools for both doctors and patients. These include the following.

1. Which is closest in meaning to “biased” in paragraph 2?
A.Inaccurate.B.Indirect.C.Unnecessary.D.Unusual.
2. What affected the participants’ level of trust in chatbot responses?
A.Their answers to chatbots’ questions.B.Their then physical conditions.
C.The origin of each response.D.The nature of the enquiry.
3. What’s the scientists’ attitude to chatbots taking on clinical medical tasks?
A.Disapproving.B.Unclear.C.Conservative.D.Positive.
4. What might the author continue talking about regarding the study?
A.Possible reasons for its findings.B.Its major limitations in reality.
C.Its influences on healthcare.D.Explanations of its methods.
