文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章通过具体事例谈论了网络交友的利与弊。

1 . Twelve-year-old Catherine has a lot of friends—632, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.

But is it possible that Catherine’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.

Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not words with friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.

Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platform.

In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.

Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual world, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need anyone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To tell about true friends.B.To start a discussion.
C.To encourage online friendships.D.To summarize(总结) the text.
2. What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in paragraph 3?
A.In any case.B.In public.C.In person.D.In advance.
3. What is Katie’s attitude toward online communication?
A.Unconcerned.B.Positive.C.Worried.D.Confused.
4. Which of the following is the Rosen’s view?
A.Teenagers need to focus on real-world friendships.B.It’s easier to develop friendships in real life.
C.It’s wise to turn to friends online.D.Social media help people stay closely connected.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On the weekend, I went shopping and after walking around for a while, I felt tired so I decided to get a cup of coffee. As I was making my way to the coffee shop, I noticed an older gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch put in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it. It was also rather clear that he had a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I wasn’t thinking about it any more, and then joined the line, waiting to be served.

Then it happened---one of the most beautiful gestures I have ever seen in my life.

There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. As the young man approached the counter to place his order, he noticed the older gentleman sitting on the bench nearby. Without hesitation, he turned back to the cashier and asked if they could provide a free cup of tea for the elderly man. The cashier was surprised by his sudden request, hesitating for a moment and nodding in agreement.

The young man then went on to pay for not only his own drink but also another one, which he handed to the older gentleman with a warm smile. The older man looked up, surprised and grateful, as the young man sat down beside him on the bench. They began to chat, and I couldn’t help but feel touched by this simple act of kindness.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。美国一项调查发现,青少年的手机持有率非常高。那么青少年究竟在多大年龄拥有自己的手机才合适呢?本文对此提出了几点建议供青少年和他们的父母参考。

8 . If it seems like all your friends have smartphones, you may be on to something. A new report by Common Sense Media, which reports on technology and media for children, found that by the age of 11, more than half of kids in the US have their own smartphone. By age 12, more than two-thirds do, and by 14, teens are just as likely as adults to own a smartphone. Some kids start much younger. Nearly 20% of 8-year-olds have their own smartphone!

Well, I study the effects of media and technology on kids, and I’m here to say that there is no single right answer to this question. The best I can offer is this: When both you and your parents feel the time is right.

Here are some points to consider to help you and your parents make this decision.

Be responsible. Have you shown that you are generally responsible? Do you understand the value of money, and can you save up to buy things you want?

Keep safe. Do you travel to or from school or after-school activities without an adult? This is when phones often go from a “want” to a “need”. Sometimes parents report that they feel better knowing they can reach their children directly, and that their kids can reach them, too.

Be careful. Do you treat your friends with kindness and respect? Do you know the fact that once something goes out onto the web, it can never truly be deleted (删除)?

When you have a smartphone, your parents are the No. I most important influence in your life. If parents use their phones all day, guess what? Their children probably will be like that, too. However, if parents have smartphone habits like putting the phone away during meals, that will go a long way toward helping kids develop the same habits.

1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The benefit of the phone.B.The need for the phone.
C.The right age for the use of the phone.D.The way of using the phone?
2. A phone goes from a “want” to “a need” when children use it to ______
A.keep in touch with their parentsB.get some information online
C.chat with their friends onlineD.send messages to their friends
3. What should parents do according to the last paragraph?
A.Teach their children to use phones.B.Use their phones as little as possible.
C.Control their children’s using phones.D.Set a good example for their children.
4. What would be the best title of the passage?
A.The advantages of having a phoneB.How children use their phones
C.How old children should be to get phonesD.The problems with children’s having phones
