文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了乌克兰孤儿Vadim在经历虐待、困境后,找到信仰,走向光明人生的历程。

4 . Growing up in Ukraine, Vadim didn’t know what it was like to live in a safe, stable home. His parents were alcoholics who would often beat him. They’d even stuff him into a wine container, breaking his little body and leaving only a small opening at the top so he could breathe and see—but only just a little.

By the time Vadim turned 9, he was living in an orphanage (孤儿院). Unfortunately, as is the case with far too many little ones, his life only got worse there. Not only was he hurt, but he was placed in a room on the third floor, making it impossible to get downstairs in a wheelchair.

This left Vadim crawling up and down the stairs, an activity that was both physically and mentally exhausting. He’d often be late for meals. If the food wasn’t already gone by the time he arrived, other kids would steal from him.

Then, a chain effect began when some special folks visited the orphanage. They told him a story about a spiritual figure who advocated love and forgiveness. This conversation helped the 14-year-old find his faith and, in turn, he had more hope than he ever had before.

Today, Vadim is no longer the boy subject to fate. He is a father to his own kids, and his life couldn’t be more different or better. Over the years, he’s discovered a gift for expressing himself through art. This inspired Tim Tebow Foundation, an organization fighting for the most vulnerable (脆弱的) people around the world, to ask if he`d like to create a piece that represented what it looked and felt like for him to have gone from “darkness to light.”

The result? A truly remarkable painting that features Vadim, in his wheelchair, leaving behind his old home, including the wine container his parents stuffed him into. His new direction includes a beautiful forest full of fall leaves and bright light, showing the hope he is said to have found in the inspiring story.

1. According to the passage, Vadim’s parents treated him ________.
A.cruellyB.forgivinglyC.thoughtfullyD.strictly
2. Why did Vadim crawl up and down the stairs when living in the orphanage?
A.Because his little roommates often did damage to his wheelchair.
B.Because other children would take his meal without permission.
C.Because he couldn’t use the wheelchair to go downstairs from a high floor.
D.Because getting downstairs was demanding for him physically and mentally.
3. What does the underlined phrase “a chain effect” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.An effective treatment for Vadim’s disability.
B.A series of positive changes occurring in Vadim’s life.
C.A sense of hope from the story of a spiritual figure.
D.A helping hand from Tim Tebow Foundation.
4. What is the message that Vadim wants to convey in his remarkable painting?
A.He admires the beauty and harmony of nature.
B.He leads a miserable life with his own kids.
C.He is expert at delicate painting techniques.
D.He says farewell to the past and harvests happiness.

5 . Odors (气味) are complex and often have changeable structures, and can show meaningful information about an animal’s surroundings, like the location of food sources. But it has previously been assumed that mammalian (哺乳动物的) brains can`t fully process these temporal changes in smell because they happen so rapidly, much faster than an animal can smell.

Using behavioral experiments, researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL(University College London)found that mice can, in fact, detect very rapid variations within odors, at rates previously not thought possible. They also showed that mice can use this information to distinguish whether odors are coming from the same or different sources, even if they are very close to each other.

This suggests that the mammalian olfactory (嗅觉的) system is also key in processing the awareness of physical space and surroundings, guiding decisions important to survival.

Andreas Schaefer, group leader of the Sensory Circuits and Neurotechnology Laboratory at UCL says: “From an evolutionary (进化的) point of view our findings make sense as they help to explain why there is a lot of computational power within the olfactory bulb, the part of the brain where the nose sends signals to. It’s not only processing chemicals from odors but also calculating information about physical distance and sources. It would have been strange for evolution to create such processing power in this part of the brain if it were not being used to help the species survive.”

In one key experiment, the scientists trained mice to detect whether two odors were coming from the same source or separate sources. The mice were able to correctly distinguish this difference.

As part of the study, the scientists designed new technologies including a high-speed odor delivery device and equipment that can measure several odors with extremely high precision. These innovations will enable more complicated work on the olfactory bulb, increasing our knowledge of how this brain region processes information about the environment and influences behavior.

1. What has been previously assumed impossible for mammalian brains?
A.Sensing fast and small changes in odors.
B.Responding to different behaviors properly.
C.Spotting relationships among different odors.
D.Remembering the exact location of food sources.
2. What do Schaefer’s words imply about the olfactory bulb?
A.It sends signals to the nose.B.It changes an animal’s evolution.
C.It detects an animal’s surroundings.D.It recognizes different parts of the brain.
3. Why did the scientists create new technologies?
A.To investigate the structures of several odors.
B.To learn more about how the olfactory bulb works.
C.To develop more treatments for the olfactory bulb.
D.To explore the impact of the environment on the brain.
4. What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Mice might have a unique olfactory system.
B.Mammalian brains own computational power.
C.Different structures of odors attract different mice.
D.Rapid changing smells can teach mice about space.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍一些改变卧室的方法。

8 . Refresh Your Bedroom

Whether you’ve outgrown the theme of your bedroom or just want to make a few changes to give it an updated look, you don’t need a big budget to make it happen.     1

Clear out the clutter (杂乱)

Before you start freshening up your space, take a look around to see what could give away to someone who could use it. Ask an adult for two bags or boxes, one for items you want to donate and one for anything that can go directly in the trash.     2

Think about light

One simple room update that has a big impact is switching up your lighting.     3     Or you could try neon wall lights or a retro lava lamp on a nightstand or desk. Moving a lamp to your room, with permission from an adult, can also add soft lighting to your space.

Consider color

4     Ask an adult if they’re willing to help you paint an accent wall in your room. An accent wall is a good chance to take a risk with color since it’s only one wall. You can choose to paint the wall behind your headboard or even a closet door. If you don’t want to paint, you could check out peel-and-stick wallpaper in fun patterns.

Layer your space

Ask a parent whether your family has extra blankets or pillows you could use in your room. They will add new colors, textures, and patterns that will instantly liven up the look and feel of your space.

    5

Personalize your room with photos of family and friends. You can ask a parent for any spare picture frames or pick some up together at a shop. Print out photos and frame them for display. You could also frame your own artwork to hang on a wall or prop up on a dresser.

A.Pick up photos.
B.Add personal touches.
C.Lighting is actually an essential decoration of a room.
D.One idea is to hang inexpensive LED string lights on a wall.
E.Another inexpensive change that can have big results is paint.
F.With a few smart strategies, you can give your room a whole new feel.
G.Once your room is neat, you can see what changes you might want to make.
