An Unforgivable Mistake

A few years ago, the company I work for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved jogging, so I was really happy when I found the apartment they had rented for us was next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.

Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of muggers (行凶抢劫者) in the park, I didn’t usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put a $10 bill in my back pocket.

It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running, another jogger bumped (撞) into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of muggers in the park occurred to me. It could have been a mugger! I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket. The money was missing! I immediately started to run after the jogger. I finally caught up with and grabbed him firmly by the arm. I started shouting and demanding that he give me the $10 bill. I’m not usually a hot-headed person, but I really lost my temper at that moment. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.

I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife the story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately interrupted (插话), “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

About a month ago, my husband and I found kindness in an unlikely place: standing in line at a Subway sandwich shop to pick up a quick dinner.

It was extremely busy on this particular night, and I noticed a dad behind us with his little girl, who looked to be around four. The man seemed as tired as my husband, but the little girl was cheerful and excited as she waited for her sandwich and cookie.

I watched as the man behind us got closer to the front of the line. He started to look worried. Right before we checked out, I heard the man say to the woman who had made his sandwiches that he was sorry to just leave his out because he didn’t have enough money to pay for them all. He looked very embarrassed. His little girl continued jumping around excitedly.

I quietly asked the cashier to add the man’s whole order to ours. I paid the $ 87.73, and we got out of there before the man behind us knew what had happened.

Like many others since COVID-19 hit, our family of five was living on one income. I was holding our debit card (借记卡) and knew that we only had $ 90.16 in our account. That was all we would have until payday three days later. But still, it felt great to be able to help that family, even though we would be out of money for a few days.

What happened next was amazing. My husband went back to that Subway the next week to pick up five sandwiches that I thought would cost $ 44.58. There was $ 47 in our account.

But it turned out that the dinner cost more than we had on the card. My husband told them to put his sandwich back because he couldn’t afford it. Then he paid for the four sandwiches and headed to our car.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了NFT给数字艺术带来了价值。数字艺术可以复制,而且很容易免费获取,但NFT可以提供一种数字证书,证明拥有人对所创造的独特虚拟或有形资产的所有权。

4 . In November, “NFT” was chosen as 2021's “Word of the Year” by Collins Dictionary. NFT is short for Non-Fungible Token. It is a “one-of-a-kind” property in the digital world that can be bought and sold like any other piece of property but has no tangible (可触摸的) form. Now, NFTs are becoming popular in the art world.

Unlike the traditional artworks that are made by hand and have their own special technique, digital arts can be copied and gained for free. But NFTs could provide a digital certificate (证明), showing the ownership of a unique virtual or physical artwork.

“In the digital world, you wouldn't know if something is a copy of something else because the copy is almost perfect. The NFT was the first to prove who owns this property,” said Pindar Wong, chairman of Internet financial infrastructure consultancy VeriFi.

Along with protecting ownership, NFTs allow the owner to get a payment each time his/her work is sold. The artwork itself still belongs to the owner, and the buyers can get limited rights to show the digital artwork. So whenever the NFTs are sold, each transaction (交易) can only be made with the owner.

“NFTs can ensure that owners, including artists or musicians, can have a part of the income from every transaction, which could encourage their creations,” said Sylvia Wang, a consultant at business-to-business platform ArtBiz Asia.

That's why many experts believe that NFTs can greatly change the art industry. According to the latest report, in the first half of 2021, the sales of NFT digital artworks reached $ 2.5 billion, an increase from just $13.7 million for the same period in 2020.

US artist Mike Winkelmann said that with the help of NFT technology, the art field has entered a new time. He created a digital work of art — Everydays: The First 5, 000 Days. In March, it was sold for $ 69 million.

1. What is NFT?
A.A piece of artwork.B.A kind of property.
C.A useful dictionary.D.A copy of something else.
2. What can we know about digital artworks?
A.They have tangible forms.B.They hardly have any value.
C.They are very easy to copy.D.It's easy to identify their owners.
3. What does Sylvia Wang agree with?
A.NFTs could largely benefit owners.
B.The creator can't get paid for digital works.
C.NFTs have the chance to replace real artworks.
D.Buyers have no right to use the digital artworks.
4. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Charm of Digital ArtB.Hot Words of the Year 2021
C.Digital Art Changing the Art FieldD.NFT Creating Value in Digital Art

9 . There’s an ongoing discussion over whether electric vehicles(EVs) should emit sounds to let the blind and other pedestrians know they're on the scene. Some think those sounds should be standardized一like the “beep, beep, beep” of heavy machinery backing up, so you'll think “something heavy this way comes” when you hear it. Several car companies have created their own sounds, especially for car markets outside the United States.

Starting in 2021, all new electric vehicles of any model will need the acoustic vehicle alarming system or AVAS. That sound will come into play when the car is going backwards or when it’s traveling at less than 12 miles an hour—speeds at which cars are more likely to be combined with pedestrians.

“We're calling on the government to take this announcement further by requiring AVAS on all existing electric and hybrid vehicles and to make sure drivers have them switched on, ” John Weisman, guide dog owner and Guide Dogs staff member, said in a statement shared by CNN.

This action followed in the steps of Japan, which was an early adopter, passing its rules in 2010. Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration passed its final ruling in February 2018, requiring vehicles to emit sound if they’re traveling slower than 6 mph.

Drivers in most situations have the ability to shut off the device when it is needed. They will probably eventually be standardized register “electric car” when you hear it. And that’s a good thing to reduce the mess on the roads.

1. What can we learn about AVAS?
A.Its speed is limited to 12 miles an hour.
B.The Japan government isnt in favor of it.
C.Not all the newly-produced EVs need to use it.
D.It sounds the alarm when the car is backing up.
2. What is John’s attitude to AVAS?
A.Supportive.B.Cautious.C.Unconcerned.D.Doubtful.
3. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The usage of AVAS.B.The characteristics of AVAS.
C.The benefits of using AVAS.D.The ways of turning off AVAS.
