文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍了克服害羞的四个策略。

1 . While socializing comes naturally for some, it can be a struggle for others. Shyness is a normal, common personality trait (特征).     1    . If you’re often hesitant to engage in social situations, you may interact with those around you in a more comfortable way. We outline four strategies for overcoming shyness in life.

Get Excited About A New Adventure

You may have been shy most of your life.     2    . Working through shyness and developing increased confidence may seem like a discouraging task for you, but viewing the journey as an exciting adventure to parts unknown can be exciting and, in turn, may boost your self-esteem.

Pay Attention To Your Words

3    . Talking to yourself in a negative way when describing yourself can damage your self-confidence. Consider replacing phrases like “I am shy” with “I am learning to be more comfortable” in social situations. This can go a long way toward moving from shyness to confidence.

Practice Mindfulness (正念)

Mindfulness involves drawing your attention to the present and being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.     4    . In one study, participants in a mindfulness program experienced an improved view of their self-worth.

Take Small Steps

Getting started can be the hardest part of learning how to be more social for those who are shy.     5    . You can start out small. Try chatting with the teller at the bank or the person ahead of you in the checkout line. This can help you build confidence and work your way up to more difficult challenges.

A.If so, that’s a part of you that you’re used to
B.Sometimes the best path toward addressing a fear is exposure
C.Mindfulness can help reduce symptoms of social anxiety disorder
D.Taking time to tend to your appearance can make a big difference
E.How we communicate and characterize ourselves can be powerful
F.However, shyness can make it hard for people to connect with others and achieve their goals
G.But engaging with people doesn’t have to be practiced as an important work presentation

For as long as I can remember, my parents raised me with dogs, cats, birds and fish in the house, and I felt the most comfort with these pets in my surroundings. As an only child, I grew up talking to these animals since I never had a partner to play with at home.

I created characters for each of the pets and I included them in my imaginary adventures, tying capes onto the dogs, who were changed into superheroes, and giving headwear to the cats, who became girls. Even after I began attending pre-school, I’d eagerly await my return from school so that I could relay all the exciting details to my pets who would listen and pretend to be slightly interested in my wandering. In fact, I probably communicated with my pets more than I did with my friends, since these animals offered a sense of safety which no individual could provide. It never felt strange for me to talk with members of different species and I always felt satisfied after I spoke with them.

Imagine the shock I faced when I realized that certain cruel persons badly treated their pets. Over the spring break of third grade when I visited Aunt Judy and my cousins in Philadelphia, I met her one-eyed cat, Gordon. A cold, skinny creature, I firstly avoided directing my attention towards the cat. Aunt Judy must have noticed my strange behavior, so she took me aside and explained that the Gordon’s owner had deserted him. The cat was extremely unhealthy and injured when Aunt Judy discovered him.

After she had found medical treatments for the cat, my aunt decided to keep him because Aunt Judy said, “The unwanted animals are the ones most in need of someone to love them wholeheartedly.” After my aunt’s advice, I spent additional time to know Gordon and as days passed, he grew less afraid of me and I became more willing to love him.

Tom was one of the rudest boys in the village where he lived. If a person’s clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him, and annoy him in every way.

One afternoon after school, a stranger with a broad-brimmed hat passed through the village. His dress was old but clean. No sooner had Tom seen the stranger than he winked (使眼色) to his playmates, and said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, and knocking off his hat, ran away.

The man turned and saw him, but Tom ran away quickly. The stranger put on his hat and went on his way. Again did Tom approach; but this time, the man caught him by the arm and held him fast. However, he just looked at Tom a moment, and then pushed him away. Instantly the naughty boy found himself free again, he began to throw dirt and stones at the stranger. But he was much frightened when the man’s eye was hit and badly hurt. All the boys now ran back to their home.

As Tom drew near the house, his sister Caroline met him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see. She told Tom excitedly that their uncle, who had been away several years, had come home; that he had brought beautiful presents for them; that he had been at the hotel nearby, and walked on foot now to surprise his brother, their father.

She said that while he was coming through the village, some bad boys threw stones at him, and hurt his eye badly, which had been treated by their mom. “But what makes you so anxious?” asked Caroline. The guilty boy rushed upstairs into his room without a word. Soon after, he heard his father calling him to come down. Shaking from head to foot, he obeyed.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了硅谷初创公司QuantumScape针对目前锂电池的弱点,研发了易燃液体电解质的固体版本,以提高电池性能。

4 . For many buyers, electric vehicles (EVs) are simply too expensive, their range is too limited, and charging them isn’t as quick and convenient as refueling at the gas stations. All these limitations have to do with the lithium-ion batteries (锂电池) that power the vehicles. They’re costly, heavy, and quick to run out of juice. To make matters worse, the batteries rely on liquid electrolytes (电解质) that can burn during crashes.

Making electric cars more competitive with gas-powered ones will require a breakthrough battery that overcomes those shortcomings. That, at least, is the argument of Jagdeep Singh, chief executive of QuantumScape, a Silicon Valley startup that claims to have developed just such a technology. The company says it did so by solving a chemistry puzzle: how to use lithium to boost the amount of energy that can be packed into a battery without posing a routine risk of fire or otherwise weakening performance. The company says it achieved this by developing a solid version of the flammable (易燃的) liquid electrolyte.

In an online presentation in December, QuantumScape displayed a series of charts showing that a single-layer lab version of the battery can be charged to more than 80% of its capacity in 15 minutes, last for hundreds of thousands of miles, and work fine at freezing temperatures. The company expects the batteries to be able to boost electric vehicles’ range by more than 80%: a car that can go 250 miles on a single charge today could drive 450 miles instead.

Indeed, the battery field is littered with examples of startups that promised breakthrough technologies but ultimately failed. And the challenges ahead of QuantumScape are enormous, particularly when it comes to turning its samples into commercial products that can be produced cheaply.

If the company succeeded, it could transform the EV marketplace. Cutting costs, boosting the range, and making charging convenient enough could broaden demand beyond people who can afford charging ports at home, and ease the anxieties of those who fear being left on longer trips.

1. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the first paragraph?
A.The high cost of electric vehicles.B.The complaints of vehicle consumers.
C.The disadvantages of present batteries.D.The inconvenience of charging cars.
2. What does Jagdeep Singh think of electric cars?
A.They consume more energy than gas-powered ones.
B.They should reduce performance to avoid the risk of fire.
C.They have gained an advantage over gas-powered ones now.
D.They need technology improvement in batteries’ performance.
3. How did QuantumScape present its achievement?
A.By showing lab data online.
B.By testing the battery capacity on site.
C.By challenging the previous range record.
D.By displaying the working principles of electric cars.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards QuantumScape’s breakthrough?
A.Dismissive.B.Objective.C.Doubtful.D.Positive.

Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school, so he had no friends yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.

At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant(傲慢的)boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.

When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.

When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad.

In 1959, when Jean Harper was in the third grade, her teacher gave the class an assignment (任务) to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and expressed her dream of becoming an airline pilot. Her paper came back with an “E” on it. The teacher told her it was a “fairy tale” (神话). Jean was heartbroken and ashamed.

As the years went by, Jean was beaten down by the discouragement and negativity she encountered whenever she talked about her dream. “Girls can’t become airline pilots; never have, never will. You’re crazy. That’s impossible.” Finally Jean gave up.

In her senior year of high school, her English teacher was Mrs. Dorothy Slaton, a demanding (要求高的) teacher with high standards. One day Mrs. Slaton asked this question, “If you had unlimited finances (资金), unlimited access to the finest schools, unlimited talents and abilities, what would you do?”

Jean felt a rush of the old enthusiasm (激情), and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream. But thinking of the questioning and ridicule (嘲讽) she had suffered before, she tore up (撕碎) the piece of paper full of “her Dream”. Jean finally wrote in his exercise book, “Sorry, teacher, I have nothing to do because I have no dream.”

The next day, after class, Mrs. Slaton stopped Jean and said, “Gene, come to my office.” She looked gently at Jean, “Jean, can you tell me why you say you don’t have a dream?” Gene said depressedly, “No one wants to believe that I can be a pilot. I have a dream. If I have the conditions you mentioned, I just want to try my best to be a female pilot.”

The next thing that Mrs. Slaton said changed the course of Jean’s life. The teacher leaned forward over her desk and said, “I have a little secret for you. You do have unlimited abilities and talents. When you leave school, if you don’t go for your dreams, no one will do it for you.”

8 . What kind of people can become scientists? When a group of researchers posed that question to ninth-and 10th-graders, almost every student gave such responses as “People who work hard” or “Anyone who seems interested in the field of science.”

Many of these same students struggled to imagine themselves as scientists, citing concerns such as “I’m not good at science” and “Even if I work hard, I will not do well.” It’s easy for them to see a scientist’s work as arising from an inborn talent.

But for high school students, learning more about some struggles of scientists can help students feel more motivated to learn science. Researchers at Teachers College, Columbia University and the University of Washington designed an intervention to change students’ beliefs that scientific achievement depends on ability rather than effort by exposing students to stories of how accomplished scientists struggled and overcame challenges in their scientific efforts.

During the study, the students read one of three types of stories about Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday. Intellectual(智力的)struggle stories: stories about how scientists “struggled intellectually,” such as making mistakes while addressing a scientific problem and learning from them. Life struggle stories: stories about how scientists struggled in their personal lives, such as not giving up in the face of poverty or lack of family support. Achievement stories: stories about how scientists made great discoveries, without any discussion of coexisting challenges.

Researchers found that students who heard either type of “struggle stories” improved their science performance after-intervention, compared to students in the control group. The effect was especially pronounced for lower performing students, for whom exposure to struggling stories led to significantly better science-class performance than low-performing students who read achievement stories. In addition, students who read struggle stories reported feeling more personally connected to the scientists. By recognizing a scientist’s struggles and introducing the growth mindset he or she applied to accomplish great works, the students were able to empathize(共情)with the scientists during their own struggles.

1. Why do students fail to imagine themselves as scientists?
A.They lack interest in science.B.They are short of confidence
C.They don’t have inborn talent.D.They have no ability to study science
2. What’s the purpose of the intervention?
A.To introduce some inspirational stories to students.
B.To expose students to scientists’ great achievements.
C.To ensure students will become scientists in the future.
D.To clear students’ misunderstandings of scientific work.
3. The underlined word “pronounced” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to________.
A.minimalB.noticeableC.doubtfulD.long-lasting
4. What can we learn from the research?
A.Science ability has nothing to do with efforts.
B.Students are more motivated by achievement stories.
C.Scientists’ struggle stories can influence readers’ beliefs.
D.Low-performing students tend to feel connected to scientists.

9 . A new Chinese app called “Miao A” or “Seconds” allows celebrities to sell their time to fans by the second. The app describes itself as the first time-trading platform that helps fans get access to their favorite celebrities.

The company buys time from stars or their agents and then sells it in one-second packets to the public. The platform charges a 3% service fee on all exchanges. An average month sees an exchange of 300 to 400 million Yuan worth of celebrities’ time.

China’s growing fan economy is the primary driver of Miao A, as every second can be cashed in for celebrity interactions. The available content includes online chat, voice, social media replies, video recordings and even face-to-face meetings. For example, buying one second of your favorite celebrity’s time gets you one line in a text-based chat with them. A live voice or video call costs at least 600 seconds, and scheduling a face-to-face meeting with your idol requires the purchase of at least 7,200 seconds. Over 3 million celebrity seconds have been purchased so far.

Over 500 celebrities are featured on the app, including actors, models, show hosts, musicians, athletes, and even a professional “League of Legends” female gamer, who offers fans a chance to play with her. An Olympic speed skater offers skating lessons, and famous businessmen offer business advice.

Fans can also choose to trade their celebrity seconds in an open exchange similar to a stock market, with trading hours set from Monday to Saturday. It is this aspect of the app that has raised concern among legal experts. Representatives of the app have responded to concerns, saying that they had introduced further measures to manage the burgeoning market, such as capping(限额)the maximum percentage that a second’s price can increase from its starting price.

Despite the critical media coverage, many users were impressed by s Miao A and the opportunities it provides for loyal fans. “This trading platform is too fantastic,” one reader wrote, and another commented, “Well, time is money.”

1. Which of the following available contents may cost most?
A.A short online chat.B.A social media reply.
C.A video recording.D.A face-to-face meeting.
2. What are some legal experts concerned about?
A.Only several celebrities are on the app.
B.More and more seconds are being purchased.
C.Fans can make a profit by trading the seconds.
D.The trading hours last from Monday to Saturday.
3. What does the underlined word “burgeoning” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Threatening.B.Growing.C.Rushing.D.Attracting.
4. Why are the readers’ words mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.To show the influence of Miao A.
B.To attract more attention to Miao A.
C.To instruct people how to use Miao A.
