1 . One of the things I want to plan well this year is how to manage my weight during the holidays. Because, let’s face it, the next few weeks are some of the toughest weeks of the year when it comes to eating well.
Yes, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas provide a lot of opportunities to eat at family dinners, parties, church events, shopping trips, and many others. But those events don’t happen every day—many days between now and New Year’s Day are normal work, school and family days. So don’t let every day become a “holiday eating event” and try to manage your weight.
Eat the holiday foods you really love, and avoid the ones you don’t
Everyone has favorite holiday foods. Three of mine are pumpkin pie and ginger cookies and sweet potatoes. Maybe for you it’s your mother’s Christmas cookies, your neighbor’s homemade candy, or your special coconut cake. So enjoy those foods, the ones that make the holidays special for you. But many holiday foods don’t hold a special place in your heart. And some of them are worthless junk that doesn’t deserve to be eaten.
Move your body every day
Regular physical activity helps you deal with some of the downsides of the holiday season, including worry, fatigue, the “blues”, and too many calories.
Drink lots of water and eat real food most of the time
Carry water with you wherever you go, and keep a bottle or glass handy at home or work. If you don’t like plain water, make fruit waters.
A.So avoid those foods |
B.Are you trying to keep a balanced diet |
C.And eat as much real food as possible |
D.Are you looking for a way to manage your weight too |
E.Time permitting, I do hope to taste different kinds of food |
F.Don’t allow the holiday season to become a six-week “eating season” |
G.It reduces stress, helps you feel energized, burns calories, and generally makes you feel great |

3 . As city officials argue under the pressure to reduce urban violence, residents in some of the most violent neighborhoods in the U.S. have chosen instead to pull up a chair, and have a sit down. One such movement has been the 21 Days of Peace event in Minneapolis, a place where sometimes 11 violent crimes were seen a month. Here, community members are simply seating themselves in lawn chairs on street comers in the most dangerous neighborhoods, and acting as Violence interrupters—and police statistics show it's working. Compared to last summer, in June 2021 violent crime numbers took a dive during the 21 Days of Peace, and continued to stay low in the following months.
“Our group asked the Minneapolis Police Department to identify the most dangerous spots in our neighborhood, and then we went there, pulled out our chairs and sat down,” write Louis King and Jeny McAfee in the Washington Post, both being part of this new wave of violence interrupters.
Similar movements of violence interruption have broken out with success in Nashville, where similar groups are working through community outreach to rebuild trust and therefore decrease crime by 40%, while arrests dropped sharply.
“We thought that was going to make it safer, and what we ended up doing was breaking down trust in those communities,” said police Jason Picanzo. Now, he says, it is the community that has made these neighborhoods safer. Violence of any kind, whether it involves us or not, is a difficult situation to risk being caught up in, but desperate times also call on our “better angels”—and these Minnesotans are stretching their wings.

5 . Now a group of Italians have created the world’s first underwater garden for terrestrial plants. Called Nemo’s Garden, the project was launched by the Ocean Reef Group as a means to experiment with food supply diversity, should climatic changes make parts of Italy too dry to farm. The large self-sustaining, totally-contained biospheres would in theory be scalable, and perhaps in the future might look like the underwater city from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
The challenge existing in growing plants underwater, given that they are normally at home in soil, was but one obstacle Nemo has had to overcome. The six air-filled greenhouses suffered major storm damage in October 2019, and before they could be fully repaired, COVID-19(新冠病毒) had all the researchers sheltering in place.
Yet the team never gave up hope, as Euronews reports, and the months of abandonment did not harm the facility in any way. June 6th saw the garden fully-operational again, including their live stream where one can watch the plants grow. The biospheres(生物圏), which sit eight meters under the surface off the coast of Noli in Liguria, use solar energy for their minimal electrical needs, and evaporated seawater condenses(凝结) on the glass of the ceiling which waters the plants. A diver swims under and up into the air pocket of the pod to harvest what’s ready to eat.
The project website says that increased pressure like that found under the ocean is actually beneficial to the speed at which plants can come up, though they admit very little research has been published on the topic—after all, not so many people are currently trying to grow strawberries it underwater.
The conditions create a really intense flavor in the vegetables, and also allow the plants’ environment to be completely controlled, with nothing impacting their life dial the growers don’t want. For now Nemo’s Garden is essentially a research lab, but if tie idea were expanded, it’s expected to be able to keep food security for the peninsula, and the world.

6 . IKEA has assembling furniture down to an art. Just go to the store, pick up a bookcase and open the box. Inside you will find everything you need and easy to follow directions. It’s a perfect fit for people who like to DIY.
Now Ryan Schlotthauer, a recent graduate, has come up with a DIY electric car according to Fast Company. Inspired by IKEA and the French automaker Renault, he designed the Höga for his thesis(论文) project.
The Höga was packed for assembly(组装) just like the bookcase from IKEA. Schlotthauer’s approach was to treat the vehicle just like one big piece of furniture with 374 parts to be assembled. The bottom of the Höga is a flat chassis(底盘) that resembles a skateboard and contains the batteries, engine, wheels, and brakes; a model that is already being used for electric cars. The top can be customized depending on need. The Höga has a bright yellow outside and a blue interior. All of the parts are color coded for easy assembly. Yellow ones are for controls and red ones for technical parts.
The mini vehicle which is only 1.8 meters high and 2.3 meters long can seat two adults. The shape of this unique electric car was inspired by the Bauhaus concept of clean design. But small does not mean that the car cannot carry a load. The cabin can be configured to accommodate a bicycle, stroller, and even enough luggage for a vacation. The rear of the vehicle can also be opened to carry an oversize load, like an IKEA closet or couch. In fact, the vehicle doesn’t have doors like a conventional car, both the front and back open.
While the Höga is just a conceptual design that was modeled in software and there are no plans to manufacture it, it is still a great idea because it would be a very affordable car for low-speed driving. Who knows, maybe a marriage between IKEA and Renault is possible and someday you will be able to build your own car.

8 . I don’t know about you, but I used to hate school.
However, there’s a school in Penang that makes learning so enjoyable that its students look forward to attending classes every day. Some students even threatened their parents they’d run away from home if they missed any of the school activities! And it’s all owing to the school principal. Who is this legend, you might ask?
He’s S. Sangga, a 57-year-old headmaster at SJK (T) Sungai Ara, Penang. The school started adopting the fun learning approach since Sangga was transferred to the school in 2011. A few floors in the school had been painted with games like snakes and ladders, as well as teng teng. Not only that, there are particular reading corners as well as computers set up just for the students to discover and learn about new things! Since then, the students have been arriving extra early at 6: 30 a. m., just to have some fun before classes start at 7: 40 a. m!
If you think that’s all, you’re wrong.
Mr Sangga is an supporter for environmental protection and preservation. The school takes the students for walks in the surrounding areas every Friday, and they’ll take them to collect garbage in selected areas every Saturday. The students have since become responsible “anti trash heroes” by making a stand for our environment. The school has also banned the use of plastic, as well as fast food and junk food. Not only do the students practice this at school, but they start to take their knowledge home to educate their family!
Sadly, Mr Sangga will retire in three years, and he hopes that the students and teachers would continue their practice.
