1 . Screen time is often considered the enemy when it comes to teaching kids to be active. However, a new research found that for 9 and 10 years old children greater social media use was related to some positive effects, including increased physical activity, less family conflict (冲突) and fewer sleep problems.
The findings come from an analysis of data from about 4,500 young people and their parents collected by the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The study gathered information about how young people’s brains develop.
In the study, children self reported activities like watching TV, texting or visiting social media sites — and the time spent on each. They were also asked about whether they play mature (成年的) video games. They rated their time on them as never, once in a while and all the time. Kids and parents report on family conflict. Parents also kept track of how well the kids slept and filled out a checklist that assessed (评定) their children’s behavior.
The results haven’t been published yet, but are being presented Tuesday at the Research Society on Alcoholism in San Diego. Previous research has been done. largely in older kids or teenagers with less focus on younger kids. Communities and social networks can have beneficial effects, so kids who are using social media to build connections may see positive outcomes.
Do these findings mean that parents should ban TVs and sign their kids up for Twitter? Probably not. Psychologist Chris Ferguson of Stetson University says that the differences identified in the research are small.

Mr. White was in the teachers’ office during the break time. He was correcting homework of his class when he heard someone calling him. It was Roy, a naughty boy in his class.
Roy seemed worried and upset. “Mr. White, I have lost 50 dollars! But I don’t know where I lost them,” Roy told Mr. White. Mr. White stopped what he was doing and asked for the whole thing. Roy had begged for 50 dollars from her mother to buy a new pair of basketball shoes. But he lost them and was afraid to tell his mother.
“Could you please tell my mum that my money was lost?” Roy asked Mr. White. Mr. White felt a little strange, so he asked, “Why don’t you tell your mother yourself?” Roy answered that his mother would not believe him. And then Roy asked Mr. White again to phone his mother.
“Don’t you want to find the money back?” Mr. White was curious. “But I don’t know where to find them. I think I have searched everywhere in our school. Forget it, and there is no chance to find them back.” Roy was nervous.
Mr. White looked at Roy carefully, but Roy just kept his head down, avoiding eye contact with Mr. White. Mr. White sensed something. He noticed that today Roy seemed different from before. Loss of money wouldn’t make so big a difference to him. “No, I will surely help you find them back.” Mr. White told Roy confirmedly.
In the afternoon, Mr. White said seriously in front of all his students, “Today Roy lost 50 dollars. The money was for his new shoes.” Hearing this, all students looked at Roy immediately. Roy’s face turned red and it seemed that he wanted to say something but he did not and just buried his head deep.
Observing all these, Mr. White continued to say, “Let’s help Roy find the money back, OK? I’m sure there is strength in numbers!” All students said yes with one voice. The search went on for an hour but there was no good news.

When Papa was growing up at the turn of the century in a very small village in rural northern Italy, education was for the rich. Papa was the son of a poor farmer. He dropped out of school when he was in the fifth grade. He went to work in a factory. For Papa, the world became his school. He was interested in everything. He read all the books, magazines and newspapers he could lay his hands on. Papa's great respect for learning and his sense of wonder about the outside world were carried aeross the sea with him and later passed on to his family.
"There is so much to learn," he'd remind us. "Though we're born stupid, only the stupid remain that way."
To ensure that none of his children ever fell into the trap of self-satisfaction, he insisted that we learm at least one new thing each day. He felt that there could be no fact too insignificant, and that each bit of learning made us more of a person and insured us against boredom and stagnation (停滞不前).
So Papa made a rule. Dinner time was the perfect time for sharing new things we had learned that day. It would never have occurred to us to refuse Papa a request. So when my brother and sisters and I gathered in the bathroom to clean up for dinner, the unavoidable question was, "What did you learn today?" If the answer was nothing, we didn't dare sit at the table without first finding a fact in our much-used encyclopedia (百科全书). "The population of Nepal..." etc.
Now, thoroughly clean and armed with our fact for the day, we were ready for dinner. It was also a time to review the activities of the day. The events we stated, no matter how insignificant, were never taken lightly. Mama and Papa always listened carefully and were ready with some comments, often deep and right to the point. One dialogue ended, and immediately another began. Papa's attention would settle upon one of us.
