文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了原子形状是如此简单以至于它们不能被进一步分解。人工智能正在帮助数学家建立一个形状的周期表。

2 . Atomic shapes are so simple that they can’t be broken down any further. Mathematicians are trying to turn to artificial intelligence (AI) for help to build a periodic table of these shapes, hoping it will assist in finding yet-unknown atomic shapes.

Tom Coates at Imperial College London and his colleagues are working to classify atomic shapes known as Fano varieties, which are so simple that they can’t be broken down into smaller components. Just as chemists arranged element s in the periodic table by their atomic weight and group to reveal new insights, the researchers hope that organizing these atomic shapes by their various properties will help in understanding them.

The team has given each atomic shape a sequence of numbers based on its features such as the number of holes it has or the extent to which it bends around itself. This acts as a bar code (条形码) to identify it. Coates and his colleagues have now created an AI that can predict certain properties of these shapes from their bar code numbers alone, with an accuracy of 98 percent.

The team member Alexander Kasprzyk at the University of Nottingham, UK, says that the AI has let the team organize atomic shapes in a way that begins to follow the periodic table, so that when you read from left to right, or up and down, there seem to be general patterns in the geometry (几何) of the shapes.

Graham Nib lo at the University of Southampton, UK, stresses that humans will still need to understand the results provided by AI and create proofs of these ideas. “AI has definitely got unbelievable abilities. But in the same way that telescopes (望远镜) don’t put astronomers out of work, AI doesn’t put mathematicians out of work,” he says. “It just gives us new backing that allows us to explore parts of the mathematical landscape that are out of reach.”

The team hopes to improve the model to the point where missing spaces in its periodic table could point to the existence of unknown shapes.

1. What is the purpose of building a periodic table of shapes?
A.To gain deeper insights into the atomic shapes.
B.To create an AI to predict the unknown shapes.
C.To break down atomic shapes into smaller parts.
D.To arrange chemical elements in the periodic table.
2. What can the bar code of each atomic shape tell us?
A.Its holes.B.Its bends.
C.Its atomic weight.D.Its properties.
3. What does the underlined word “backing” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Design.B.Help.C.Duty.D.Threat.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Thanks to AI, new atomic shapes have been discovered.
B.Mathematicians turn to AI to create more atomic shapes.
C.AI helps build a relationship between chemistry and maths.
D.A periodic table of shapes can be built with the help of AI.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了职业生涯规划的影响技巧。

6 . My students frequently ask me how I planned out my career to become president of Fidelity Investments. I always tell them, “There was no grand plan; I backed into my career one step at a time.” In this tough economy and ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to smartly evaluate each step in your career. To prepare for whatever surprises lie ahead, try to make choices today that will maximize your options in the future.     1

Gaining transferable (可转移的) knowledge begins with the choices you make at school. You want your education to provide you with the necessary skills and expertise to succeed in a wide variety of jobs.     2     I favor those that involve extensive writing, rigorous analysis, or quantitative skills.

Once you have finished your formal education, search for jobs that will allow you to further expand your transferable knowledge—to help you find your next job. Let’s say you take a job putting together airplane leases. Within a few years, you could become the world’s expert on the subject.     3     By contrast, if you take a job that will expand your computer programming skills, you can greatly boost your options for later steps in your career.

Remember gaining transferable knowledge is only one piece of the puzzle.     4     As a saying goes, “Organizations don’t hire people. People hire people.” The more people you know, the more people will think of you when a job pops open—even when it is not publicly advertised.

Of course, you can build your network to some degree without changing jobs.     5     But this sort of event-driven networking pales in comparison with the deep bonds you can develop with your colleagues by working, communicating, and traveling with them.

A.You can make yourself more attractive.
B.Gain transferable expertise and form close bonds with your colleagues.
C.Your next step should help you expand your web of personal relationships.
D.This later helped me evaluate and start business units throughout the world.
E.You can attend conferences or participate in committees at trade associations.
F.This means that you need to make smart choices about the courses you will follow.
G.However, this narrow expertise probably won’t help you in any other line of work.

A Turning-point Party

The cold snow was falling as Kelly struggled home from school in December. How much she hated the snow---and everything else about Pinetree, Wyoming, America. How much she missed Thailand! “I hate it here! I want to go home!” Kelly thought.

She reached for a small white envelope in her pocket. In it was an invitation to Jennifer’s party: Kelly didn’t want to go. She felt awkward at the thought of being at a party with a bunch of kids she barely knew. She closed her eyes and remembered this time of year people would hold a festival to thank the Mother of Water in Thailand, They used banana leaves to make a little boat with a candle lit in it, made a wish for the coming year and set the boat floating on the river.

Kelly sighed and pushed open the door to her parents’ restaurant. They were busy working. “Maybe I should go just this once for Mama and Papa. They are so worried that I’m not making any friends.” Kelly went over and tied an apron around her waist. As she was washing dishes, she told her mother that she had been invited to a party on Friday night. Mama smiled saying now she might be happy in their new home. Kelly nodded, thinking Pinetree could never be her home.

On Friday evening, Papa drove Kelly to the party. Jennifer met her at the door and led her into the dining room. Six kids from her classes were seated around the table, on which were sitting small brown cookie houses. They were selecting colorful candies and gluing them to their own houses, Wow, she loved making things. For this part of the party, she could be herself. She decided to decorate her cottage like one of the golden temples of Thailand. As she was making it, Jennifer wondered how she did it. The others joined staring at Kelly with admiration, Kelly felt a warm glow. Maybe I could fit in here-----a little, she thought.

文章大意:文章是一篇说明文,讲述了自尊的定义,拥有健康自尊的人们的特征和低自尊人群对自身的危害,最后对于如何正确提升自尊给出了建议。

9 . Self-esteem is the ruling view you have of yourself. This includes your beliefs about your inner qualities and how you think others see you.     1     Someone can develop low self-esteem even when they are highly functional and greatly skilled. Understanding this mysterious emotional currency might be the key to unlocking your own self-worth.

People with healthy self-esteem don't need to boast about themselves to others. People with low self-esteem may tell you how much everyone loves them, what a great job they do at work, and how amazing they are at pretty everything under the sun even though they really wonder if it's true. People may see them as obnoxious or “full of themselves”.     2     They are not shy about sharing ideas, including constructive criticisms of others. They also take care of themselves without second-guessing or apologizing. They are the people who we say seem “sure of themselves”.

If you're starting to think you may have low self-esteem, you can work on the way you talk to yourself. When you turn off negative self-talk, you can open the floor to positive reinforcements and access the courage to show different sides of yourself. It isn't going to feel good at first, though. Keep going until it becomes less and less and maybe even a few awkward laughs in the mirror may help.     3

However, in serious cases of low or even non-existent self-esteem, you may want to call in a professional or a specialist. Good mental health is important, and professionals doing psychotherapy do not pass judgement or give corrections.     4     It is the best way to get at the roots of your real self-esteem problems.

5     It will take some work but your entire life — from your relationships to your body image to your work habits — will be touched with the kind of power that only comes from someone believing in themselves. This is the hardest part, and the greatest leap. With some changes and support, you can improve your self-esteem and see how everything else changes as a result.

A.Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality, though.
B.You have the power to shape a new self-perception.
C.This encourages you to speak openly without worry.
D.The real test of character is whether they can learn from their mistakes.
E.Self-esteem refers to a person's overall sense of his or her value or worth.
F.People with a healthy level of self-esteem present themselves with a casual confidence.
G.With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写字数应为150左右。

It was Mother's Day and I was shopping at a local supermarket with my son who was five years old, Tennyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping, we realized that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately, a lot of people stopped to help out.

While we were walking towards the scene, Tennyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me, “Mom, it's not much fun falling over in front of everyone.” Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位)at the front of the supermarket, he added, “Why shouldn't we buy the lady a flower? It will make her feel better.” I was amazed that he'd come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can't take your money for such a wonderful deed.”

By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman's husband and I told him it was from my son. At that time, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you very much.” He then turned to me, “You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you.”

The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tennyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son bent down his body to the injured lady and tenderly said, “Happy Mother's Day to you, too.”
