文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了人类不是动物王国中唯一的时尚达人。显然,山雀也可能热衷追求时尚。只要有机会,它们就会用当季必不可少的颜色来装饰巢穴。

4 . Humans are not the only fashionistas in the animal kingdom. Titmice can be fashion-victims, too, apparently. A study by Sonja Wild and Lucy Aplin shows that, given the chance, titmice decorate their nests with this season’s must-have color.

Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin were following up the work published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various colored balls of yarn(纱) out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for incorporation into local birds’ nests. But which particular hue(颜色) was favored varied from season to season. This suggested that the color chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.

Williams’s work was, however, forgotten until Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin came across it while following upon a different study. This group noted that, during any given breeding season, the blue titmice they were investigating tended to incorporate the same plants into their nests regardless of how abundant those herbs actually were. This, too, suggested fashion-following—and it likewise led Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin to speculate that birds were studying the nests of others and copying them. They therefore set out to re-run Williams’s experiment.

According to the study, of 68 titmice nests built that season in the experimental areas, 26 included wool from a dispenser(分配器). Of these, 18 we reconstructed after both colors had become available from all dispensers. Even so, 10 of that 18 included only the color of wool first chosen by a nestbuilder. By contrast, all eight wool-bearing nests in the control zone contained a mixture of colors-a statistically significant difference.

Titmice, then, do seem to be “on trend” when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains unclear. Dr Wild and Dr. Aplin suspect the trendsetters are older birds, and that evolution favors younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune throws at a titmouse. Williams’s original work, though, suggested such initial choices were arbitrary(任意的), a bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.

1. What proved titmice’s fashion-following in Williams’s study?
A.They tended to make their nests colorful.
B.They had their favorite color all the year round.
C.They decorated their nests in the breeding season.
D.They chose the same colored materials for their nests.
2. How did Dr Wild and Dr Aplin prove their study?
A.By analyzing the shapes of titmice’s nests.
B.By recording the sound of titmice carefully.
C.By collecting some actual numbers about titmice.
D.By observing the course of titmice’s building nests.
3. What did older birds’ color choice suggest according to Williams’s work?
A.It came mainly from their habit.B.It was based on random choices.
C.It was basically out of their nature.D.It reflected the power of elder birds.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Birds can make their nests colorful.noB.Birds can learn fashionable lifestyles.
C.Birds can follow the fashion of humans.D.Birds can be just as fashion-conscious as people.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了克里斯教附近的没有父亲的孩子钓鱼,以此让他们找回内心的平静。他还成立了非盈利公司Take a Kid Fishing Inc.。

5 . It was hard not to notice the 8-year-old boy Brooke across the street who stormed in and out of his own house. He did it so often that a neighbor, Chris, wondered what was going on in his life. So Chris asked him.

“He told me that he didn’t have a father,” says Chris, now 58, “and I realized there might be something I could do for him.”

That something was fishing, and Chris’s father taught him how to fish. “Fishing always brought me peace and it taught me how to be patient. When you’re on the water, you can forget about your problems and just appreciate the moment,” Chris said.

One Saturday afternoon on the water led to another, and soon he was teaching other kids in their neighborhood, Lakeland, Florida, how to fix a line, hold a pole, and roll in a big catch. That was 16 years ago.

Since then, Chris has taken groups of kids out almost every weekend to fish. Then, in 2018 he started the nonprofit Take a Kid Fishing Inc. He and a small group of volunteers have introduced more than 2, 500 kids — most without fathers around — to the calming peace found on the water and the excitement of catching a fish.

One of those kids was Jayden, who struggled emotionally when his father died in a car accident in January 2020.

“He was really close to his dad,” says Jayden’s mother, Terra. “And with two younger sisters, he felt he needed to take over the man-of-the-house role. He was trying to be strong for everyone and didn’t show his emotion. I was wondering what to do to help him, and then I learned about Take a Kid Fishing Inc.”

Jayden, now 13, has become a devoted fisherman and credits Chris with helping him mature.

“There’s nothing like feeling that first tug (猛拉) on the line and seeing a kid light up with a smile,” Chris says. “I feel lucky to witness that every weekend.”

1. What can we learn about Brooke from the first paragraph?
A.He tended to be restless.B.He had an ambitious mind.
C.He longed to have a father.D.He was interested in fishing.
2. Why did Chris setup Take a Kid Fishing Inc?
A.Because he enjoyed the company of children.
B.Because he had to raise some volunteers to help kids.
C.Because he wanted to light up fatherless children’s life.
D.Because he considered teaching children to catch fish fun.
3. What’s the purpose of the author mentioning Jayden?
A.To present the benefits of Chris’s act.
B.To show Jayden’s mother’s appreciation.
C.To promote the popularity of fishing together.
D.To make readers donate money to Chris’s organization.
4. What conclusion can be made from Chris’s work?
A.Fishing can strengthen family connections.

C.Family kids are the future of a strong nation.
D.Proper and timely guidance makes a mature kid.

Lisa checked the words on her spelling test again and again. If she got full marks today, she would win her class’ Spelling Challenge and a prize, a series of books that she had longed for. Plus, Mr. Matt had promised to sing a song in front of the whole class if anyone got a perfect score.

Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased “-ty” and wrote “-ly” before handing in her paper. Mr. Matt graded the papers while the students were at rest.

After a break, Lisa hurried into the classroom, sitting in her seat nervously-Mr. Matt walked to the front of the room and cleared his throat. “Congratulations, Lisa! You did it!” Then, he kept his promise and began to sing. He sang so well that the whole class erupted!

Mr. Matt presented Lisa with her prize. A big smile spread across Lisa’s face as she read the label on the books: To Lisa, for her perfect score in spelling.

As Lisa burst through the front door afterschool, Mom asked, “Everything OK?”

“Everything’s perfect!” Lisa shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize.

Mom hugged her. “Well done, Lisa”

Lisa scooped up(抱起) her cat. “Can you spell nicely, Casper? And quickly and honestly, and...” It suddenly occurred to her that she had misspelled the word. Rooted to the spot, Lisa reflected on how she could tell the whole class she shouldn’t have earned the prize at all. She dashed into her room and pulled out the test paper. “If I put the missing’t’ back in, no one would ever know,” she thought. Recalling the joyful moment, a mixture of guilt and unwillingness overwhelmed her.

9 . When I first heard about Summit Learning, I admitted I was not a bit happy and excited at all. I thought it would require interactions with others. But later, I was astonished when I got to experience it firsthand.

Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a peer (同龄人) review. I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I preferred to work independently. But when I got involved, I found in the experience, I had done something that I thought was nearly impossible it made my poetry better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more detail.

One of our final products of the project was to present our poetry to the class. I’ve always loved public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning, I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The peer activities we did with a partner gave me more belief in my ability and inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.

Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive and hard-working culture that allows us to push our boundaries and keep going. It creates a sense of community since we are all working towards a similar goal.

As an active boy, I have always been ahead and advanced, but in a normal classroom, there are restrictions on what I can do. With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my work and pursue my goals.

Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself going back to a normal classroom.

10 . 读后续写

I always wondered how people would react if I tried to approach a stranger for help in a busy place like a street corner or in a bustling mall. I personally have hurried past a stranger who tried to catch my attention in a busy place.

Yesterday I had a taste of being stuck in such a desperate situation where your only hope of help would have to come from a total stranger.

I was in a busy shopping mall buying a large piece of luggage. After the purchase in one of the large and expensive shops, I picked up my phone from my pocket to call my driver waiting in the parking lot and my phone was dead.

I then requested the shop assistant selling me the luggage, which was not cheap at all, if she could ring the number of my driver for me. She replied, still all smiles, “I’m sorry Sir, but it is the shop policy that we cannot use mobile phones while working in the shop.”

As I was wondering what kind of policy that was, I saw a nice-looking teenage boy coming toward me. Remember my wife’s interesting theory that beautiful people are more likely to give you a hand when you’re in trouble, I thought I might have a chance. But before I could say a word, he walked past me. It turned out he simply didn’t see me.

I waited in the mall but it seemed nobody bothered to look at me. Disappointed and tired, I got out of the shop on to the busy street in front. I stood there with people rushing by, looking at their faces to see if they will show kindness to me. I began wondering how many times I had reacted to strangers like the shop girl and the teenager.
