文章大意:本文是说明文。巴西新当选的总统Bolsonaro认为巴西对热带雨林的保护阻碍了经济的发展,由此引发了人们对保护热带雨林不同的观点。

1 . The newly-elected president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro says that his country should withdraw (退出) from the 2015 Paris Agreement, and that Brazil’s rainforest protections are standing in the way of economic success. During the election campaign, he promised to ease protections for areas of the Brazilian Amazon set aside for native people and wildlife. Are Brazil’s rainforests in danger?

The Amazon, the world’s largest rainforest, is called “the lungs of the planet.” Each tree takes in and stores carbon dioxide from the air around it. Billions of trees pull up water through their roots and release water vapor into the air, forming tiny drops of water. The Amazon creates 30 to 50 percent of its own rainfall. Carlos Nobre, a climate scientist, says that it is almost impossible to say Just how important the rainforest is to the planet’s living systems.

Some of Bolsonaro’s support comes from business and farming groups. One supporter, Luiz Carlos, noted that farmers “are not invaders, they are producers.” He blamed the past government for supporting rainforest protections at the cost of farmers. “Brazil,” he said, “will be the biggest farming nation on Earth during Bolsonaro’s years.”

Paulo Artaxo, a professor of environmental physics at the University of Sao Paulo, says that if Bolsonaro keeps his campaign promises, then “deforestation of the Amazon will probably increase quickly — and the effects will be felt everywhere on the planet.”

Other scientists warn that if the Amazon and other tropical rainforests lose too many trees, this could affect rainfall in other areas. Without enough trees to support the rainfall, the longer and bigger dry season could turn more than half of the rainforest into a tropical grassland.

2 . 4 Hotels That Will Make Your Life Easier

For the business traveler who is all about efficiency: Check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum of trouble.

When you are pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process.

1. Yotel New York

The self-service kiosks (售货亭) at this high-tech New York hotel work just like the ones you’d see at an airport. There are just five-steps to register and obtain your card key. There is even a robotic luggage bellboy. You tap in the number of bags you are carrying and sizes, then wait for a robot arm to swing down and store your luggage in a locker (say, for a day trip). This also speeds up the check-in process if the first thing you need to do, like me, is heading to a series of meetings

2. Marriott Detroit Airport

Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet). Here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.

3. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis

I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. Like the Yotel, the kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about three minutes, when I left, I was equally impressed-with the fast check-out. An agent meets you in the lobby with an ipad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line.

4. Radisson: LaCrosse

The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few selected hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get the kiosk, you scan the barcode to get your key without any other steps required. It’s super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well.

1. What does “infuriate” mean in the first paragraph?
A.interestB.angerC.troubleD.mislead
2. Which two hotels offers a mobile app for customers to check in?
A.Yotel New York and Marriott Detroit Airport
B.Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson: Lacrosse
C.Marriott Detroit Airport and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
D.Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson: Lacrosse
3. Which hotel will send you receipt by email?
A.Yotel New York
B.Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
C.Radisson: Lacrosse
D.Marriott Detroit Airport
4. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.At Yotel New York, a robot will help you with all the check-in process
B.With its check-in app, you may enter your room in Marriott without a key
C.Hyatt Regency Minneapolis is close to an airport terminal.
D.The barcode you receive from Radisson contributes to the fast check-in

3 . 阅读短文内容,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Scientists have wondered whether domesticated(驯养的)animals can recognize different human faces. Scientist Lea Lansade did an experiment     1     (find)out how well horses can recognize individual people in     2     (photograph). She and her team first taught the horses how to “choose” between two side-by-side images by     3     (touch)their noses to a computer screen. Then, the horses     4     (show) photos of their current keeper alongside faces of unfamiliar humans, and never had they     5    (see)photos of any of the people before. The horses     6     (correct) recognized their current keeper and ignored     7     strangers’ faces about 75 percent of the time, significantly better than chance.

What’s more, the horses also picked photos of their previous keeper, the person     8     they hadn’t seen in six months. In fact, even though the horses didn’t get it right every single time, they were at least as accurate in picking out their previous keeper as they were at recognizing their current one. The results suggest that not only can horses tell the difference between familiar     9     unfamiliar human faces, they understand the fact that photos are virtual representations of real life without any other help. And they’re even     10     (good)at this than our oldest animal friend: the domestic dog.
